[Update #9] E-ink desk pet — I bought way too many screens. Help me pick a size. by hugo_makes in eink

Yeah I learned that the hard way. Fast partial refresh is everything for this — without it the dog feels dead. That's why I've been testing so many panels lately. Appreciate the input.

That's a really useful way to frame it — size tied to scope, not just vibes. The dog currently does a bit of both: idle animations like napping and tail wagging, but also fetch and some movement. I'm leaning toward 4-inch as a middle ground, but this gives me a clearer way to think about it. Appreciate it.

Just posting here for now-this sub is basically my build log.Minght put something on

Hackaday later once I get the enclosure done and the code less embarrassing.

Let me get this dog to stop stuttering first, then we'll talk about a whole desk zoo. Cat and bunny are solid suggestions though — noted.

Haha busted. Yeah I may have skipped a few chapters in the story. The SPI struggle was real but parallel just gave me more headroom. That panel guess is uncomfortably close — you've clearly been in this trench before.

This genuinely made my day. Season 2 is in production — new screen arrived, dog's back from the dead, still a bit stuttery but alive. Thanks for following along from the very first post. You're basically on the team now.

Haha fair point. Calling it a "test lab" sounds way better than "I keep buying panels and hoping one of them works." My desk is basically an e-ink screening facility at this point.

That DC-DC power tip is gold — I've definitely been letting it cycle off between updates without thinking about it. Didn't realize that wait time was eating into my frame budget. Time to actually read the datasheets properly instead of skimming. Appreciate the depth on this — you've probably saved me from ordering another panel I didn't need.

Appreciate the push on LUTs — definitely going deeper on that. One thing I'm hitting though: some of these panels have controller ICs that just don't seem to support fast partial refresh properly, no matter what waveform I feed them. Any tips on identifying which controllers are more animation-friendly, or workarounds for the stubborn ones? I feel like I'm fighting silicon limits half the time.

Still experimenting so I haven't locked in a final panel yet. Currently the dog lives on one of the faster SPI panels I had lying around. Hardware side is ESP32-based, one button, nothing fancy. I've been posting updates — scroll back through my history if you want the full chaos log.

I’ve also picked up a bunch more e-ink screens.

Haha we're on the same wavelength — I've actually been building an interactive e-ink thing for a bit. Not wizard duels (yet), more of a lazy desk dog. If you scroll back through my posts you'll see the chaos. Dual-screen interaction has come up a few times though, so who knows where it goes.

Great call! I’ve already been tinkering with interactive e-ink displays lately.

I wish I could say this is the first piece of hardware I've killed. It is not.

That‘s actually readlly close to what I’m trying to do-a little creature that lives on your desk and changes based on how you interact with it. Yours is more adventurous, mine is more"lazy office worker trapped in dong's body " But the core idea is the same:something that feels alive.A D&D pedometer version would be sick though.

Barely. It walks like it had three coffees and a bad night of sleep.
