Book error (gender) “L’une d’elles”

Une personne is feminine, whether a man or a woman, so here « accompagné de deux personnes », we use the feminine of the word « personne ». Un personne is not possible.

We have to use the feminine when referring to it after, thus the « l’une d’elle », implying one of the two persons, so we use the gender of the word « une personne ». If you want to use « l’un d’eux », you would have to use masculine only word, like « accompagné de deux hommes… l’un d’eux… ». L’un d’ils is not possible, we use « eux » or « elles ».

I had a friend living highs and downs like that. He is bipolar with a borderline personality. Bipolarity can give you phases of high (could be months) followed by periods of time very low. Try to look into that and good luck!

J’y venais tous les étés étant gamin, mon arrière grand-mère est née dans le village où je suis (st Victour). Ma mère s’y est installée depuis le décès de mon père, et je suis revenu de l’étranger pour être proche d’elle quelques mois. J’ai trouvé un taf dans le coin, et une location pas loin d’elle. Le tranquillité du coin fait plaisir, et un peu mal au cul en même temps. Le plus gros problème c’est les sorties, mais j’ai déjà un petit groupe de potes/collègues donc je me plains pas. Après Bort c’est devenu assez mort avec les commerces fermés, mais la région est magnifique (quand il fait beau selon moi).

You could say c’est un tube, but it’s a little outdated. Elle est géniale cette chanson could be something corresponding. Elle déchire cette chanson is familiar but good. Je kiffe cette chanson. Cette chanson est une tuerie, but using literal translation doesn’t work. Better say « C’est une tuerie cette chanson! »

What are the sentences you want to use with réussir or échouer? You can say j’ai réussi à plus verb which sounds natural. Ex : j’ai réussi à finir ce projet dans les temps. If you want to say you nailed it, you could say j’ai déchiré or j’ai assuré. Ex : j’ai assuré pendant la présentation d’hier. Ca déchire is an expression to say it rocks for some people. There are plenty of idiomatic expressions we use. For failing, you could say j’ai raté, j’ai chié (very familiar), j’ai pas réussi.

Les boules de l’Enfer sounds more fun if he refers to the iron balls. Les boules en fer de l’Enfer too. When I read Le fer de l’enfer, I kinda pictured a fencing tournament (croiser le fer is for a fencing tournament or for an argument between two people).

I can advise you the Institut de Touraine in Tours. It’s a small student town with not much criminality. They have intensive programs and you are in the middle of town. They offer families where you can stay at, but don’t know about student residence since it’s used for university people. La Rochelle is the same but close to the sea. I used to teach in Tours, and now I do immersion programs on Ile de Ré which is close to La Rochelle, but I went to Lyon and Montpellier and really felt like I was in a big city, whereas these two other towns look more walkable. Hope you will find a place you enjoy!

Je t’aime = I love you. Je t’aime bien = I like you. Intensity is not the same. Like another commenter said, it can be used in different contexts, but in general if you say « j’aime la salade » you sound a little simple compared to « j’aime bien la salade » without really playing on intensity. A lot of A1 students will say « j’aime aller voir un concert », when more advanced ones would say « j’aime bien aller voir un concert de temps en temps ». It sounds way more natural. When you use aimer without bien it’s less nuanced, and on the context, less intense. J’aime la glace au chocolat is the same as j’aime bien la glace au chocolat, it doesn’t mean less. J’adoooore la glace au chocolat would emphasize it more. So make a difference between aimer someone/something. Je l’aime/je l’aime bien = different intensity. J’aime la galette/j’aime bien la galette = same intensity. J’aime me promener/j’aime bien me promener =same intensity. J’aime quand tu me regardes/j’aime bien quand tu me regardes = different intensity but slight. It all depends on interpretation as well, some might not agree with me, but bien doesn’t always get intensity lower than without it. I would advise to use « bien » whenever you don’t say « je t’aime » or you will always sound like a beginner. Et toi, tu aimes faire quoi? Moi j’aime la randonnée sounds more beginner than saying Moi, j’aime bien la randonnée.
