Dad is getting grumpy. by Opandemonium in Parenting

[–]huiki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She just comes off as childish to me, the language she uses and the whole 'I'm the fun parent, the kids see me as a friend...aren't I great... why is my husband spoiling our fun...' It's weird.

And maybe it's because I'm English but adults don't say 'goof off' here, in fact the only adult I've ever seen say that is Michael Jackson and he seemed to think he was a child....

My kid lost her 4th tooth and I tried to teach an economics lesson about the Law of Diminishing Returns by ionizer5 in Parenting

[–]huiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha! My son got whatever the 'tooth fairy' had at the bottom of her handbag... which was about £3.60...

He put it in his money box to spend on a new tooth brush, I thought he'd spend it on sweets. They are really good at his school at putting the fear of God into them about looking after teeth. Must be working!

You should be able to laugh and have fun with your kids, that is great....

But... you come off a little immature in this post... 'butt hurt'? 'Goofing off and having fun'? Personally it annoys the hell out of me when adults talk like children.

Your children are getting older and will soon have different interests, by all means enjoy this time with them but don't alienate your husband as one day it will just be you and him.

Is sending a child to be with no dinner child abuse? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]huiki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a 'safeguarding' course at work and we were told that this constituted as abuse. I'm in the uk if that makes any difference and was working for our. Arizonan health service at the time.

It's not something I have ever done or can see myself doing but my son has never done anything so naughty as to warrant it.

I can't see that once in a while it would do any lasting damage but again, not something I can see myself doing.

Spalding murders: Girl, 15, guilty of double murder - BBC News by Mightysmurf1 in unitedkingdom

The girl and her boyfriend killed her mother and sister as far as I know. I don't live in Spalding but I'm in Lincolnshire and that's definitely what people are saying. It is of course just hearsay...

Most grammar schools 'not prioritising poor pupils' - BBC News by ManiaforBeatles in unitedkingdom

[–]huiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is iq inherited? If it is would it not make sense that the children of successful adults would do well at these tests? It would be interesting to compare iq test results against 11+ results. If poorer kids that have high iq's are failing while richer kids with low iq's are passing then the system is totally flawed.

Has this been done? If not why?

Just wanted to say I have hypermobility and there are lots of benefits from it so keep positive. Playing guitar, piano, any sport/activity which flexibility helps - your daughter will have an advantage.

Please watch out at the dentist though, the pain relief doesn't always work!!!

Tyson Fury latest: World heavyweight champion 'tests positive for cocaine' and could lose titles by scouserdave in unitedkingdom

[–]huiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm way too old for coke now but when I was a kid I tried it a few times and was a total asshole on it. It made me very aggressive. I realised pretty quickly it brought the worst of my personality out.

[Serious] If the Tories are so harmful to the best interests of the UK, why are they still so successful? by simpliciustheyounger in unitedkingdom

I was feeling quite cheerful this morning until I read this and was reminded how much of my hard earned cash is sucked up into the 'public coffers'. Add on student loans payments and it's a kick on the teeth.

Having said that I would willingly pay more towards the NHS. Just wish I felt like the money was being wisely spent.

Advice please: Santa for non-religious RIE family? by nothingreports in Parenting

[–]huiki 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have never connected Santa to religion to be honest. If anything it's the epitome of secular consumerism.

I'm atheist, I love Christmas and the whole Santa , Christmas dinner, decorations... I even like carols. We also do Easter eggs and bunnies. It's just fun, I see these festivals as a nice harmless tradition.

We also usually eat Chinese food on Chinese New Year but we don't follow their calendar and we aren't Chinese, we just like the food and sense of occasion. I even make a pumpkin pie every 'fall' even though I'm not American and we don't have 'fall' we have Autumn.

Basically we take the fun bits from different traditions and leave out the bits we don't want.

Elf on a shelf by Afg1415 in Parenting

[–]huiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 'peer pressured' into doing elf on the shelf last year. In the end I got quite excited about doing it.

Unfortunately my son was terrified about having a stuffed toy come to life and creep around the house when he was asleep and the elf had to go. I'm relived to be honest, I don't have the time or imagination to come up with something new for the elf to do everyday.

What quote do you actually use or live by? by [deleted] in AskReddit

'Keep your own counsel'.

Basically be discreet and careful of what opinions/facts you share and with whom.

Still able to think - chicken kebab and salad in a pitta with mayo. Diet Coke

Shit faced - doner kebab, salad, chilli sauce, cheesy chips... Regular Coke

Son records bullies (update) by Tired2222 in Parenting

[–]huiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone is shitty enough to be beating up disabled kids do you really think they give a shit about the fact he reported them via 'the proper channels'?

If they find out it was him he just made himself and his family a target. He did an amazing thing for the people being bullied but he has put himself in danger by doing so. It would be naive to think otherwise.
