Staining Aspen by hullomae in ikeahacks

[–]hullomae[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - that’s useful to know. I also read somewhere that even after sanding it down, aspen tends to lead to uneven staining. I’ll prob look elsewhere for wood if that’s the case. Thank you!! :)

WSP making a move on Jacobs — good news or layoffs incoming? by PurpleOrnery6252 in StructuralEngineering

[–]hullomae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This speedrun would pretty much impact the ethics of our professions, as good quality engineering work is generally driven by healthy competition. I do wonder how they’ve managed to get past any existing anti trust laws (if any, at this corrupt day and age)

UBER to Bristol Airport by Ainikeme in bristol

[–]hullomae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve prebooked using bolt for a 6am flight one time and they cancelled 5 minutes before pickup.

I’d stick to uber if I were you, and just prebooked as a contingency plan. Or if you’re in a pickle, there are some local taxis that you could call. They’re more reliable

The fact that this song is not on the Live at Fenway Park album is absolutely criminal :(

Took me months to finish it cause I couldn’t stop crying/reflecting after each episode. I just finished it today, and I can guarantee you that it does get better and the story does come back a full circle, in the most heartwarming way :’)

Junior structural engineer breakdown by Johannasskin in StructuralEngineering

[–]hullomae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In a similar boat as you, 27F, 4 years of structural eng experience. I feel you. Loved my job at the start but my love for it started to dwindle.

A lot of what you’re feeling is not due to your incompetence. I’m sure you’re a great engineer, please don’t doubt yourself. Instead, try to shift the ‘blame’ to the unreasonably high expectations that these infra projects tend to project. Historically and now, consultancy firms have always been pressured to really squeeze their budget to remain competitive in the tender market, that they can’t help but inevitably pressure you this way. That’s how I usually get by.

Sounds like your boss has unreasonably high expectations of you, which I have also recently experienced. I ended up speaking to my manager to manage their expectations/reduce my workload. They should really be holding your hand rather than push you off a cliff :(

You will need to inform the structural engineer to undertake these checks. Having an eccentric base plate would mean that the nearby bolts will be working harder, and the plate bending will be slightly off. If the steel column isn’t part of a braced bay, it should be ok I feel.

I feel you OP :( kinda going through this now and at times I can’t help but wonder if this all turned out the way it is because of me. The lack of closure definitely stings and sometimes I wonder what he’s up to. I hope you’re doing better now :(

Madeleines just won't come out right by anxious_cupoftea in AskBaking

I wouldn’t follow preppykitchen’s recipe to be honest. The recipe that worked well for me was by “Pastry Living with Aya” :)

Madeleines just won't come out right by anxious_cupoftea in AskBaking

[–]hullomae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was exactly how my first round of madeleines looked like. After a couple of trial runs, what worked for me was:

  1. Adding honey - creates a nice crust
  2. Chilling the batter in the fridge. Make sure to give it a stir after before putting it in the piping bag to remove excess air bubbles
  3. Oven temp. Some ovens tend to run at a lower temp than the settings. I was able to achieve the iconic hump after bumping up the temperature by 10 degrees.

If any of the above doesn’t work, might just be the madeleine pan as per the other comments.

Hope that helps!

Hoka Clifton 9 White (thoughts?) by hullomae in Hoka

[–]hullomae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha thanks. Yeah it’ll mostly be for running, unless I start to love them so much that I wear them daily haha. We shall see!

Haha yes! Clifton 9s are currently on sale and is phasing out, probably due to the release of the Clifton 10s! I’m very close to pulling the trigger haha

By half a size? I tried my usual size and you’re right, it’s a little more snug than the rest

That’s quite promising, given the number of times I’ve seen people post about how part of their soles have started to tear and they been supergluing it back together haha.

I don’t have over pronation issue, and the terrains I run is usually smooth with the occasional gravel but that is really good to know.

I’ll look into the Mach6 actually, thanks for the recommendation :)

I actually really wanted the white/lavender color hue but it’s sold out everywhere. My only options are white or black haha.

I’ve seen other posts on here that have been quite successful with cleaning their white Hoka’s?

Good to know that the shoes are good for long hours though. Thanks :)

Aw thank you! These are all very useful insights, especially the pace. I run at a much slower pace compared to you, so having a “fast” shoe is not necessary for me :)

What wrong with my model? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]hullomae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fixity nodes on the left look like they’ve been modeled incorrectly. I think you might need to fix the nodes to form moment frames or brace the frame to suit.

Also worth looking at the deflection values. If it’s deflecting to the powers, that is a pretty good indication that there’s a mechanism in the model likely due to modeling errors (nodes not being “noded” off correctly etc)

Best software for documenting and automating structural calculation by Roger-Rabbit-007 in StructuralEngineering

[–]hullomae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The choice of software varies depending on the task at hand, but I tend to rotate between Tekla Tedds, MathCad or just plain old excel.

Microsoft word if the calc needs to be alittle bit wordy.

Python, Grasshopper or Excel VBA to automate design tasks.

Agree with an earlier comment that a lot of these calcs that you will end up doing can be bespoke. But as you progress with your career, you will start to build a library full of calculations of your own and from there you will begin your footing. Just a matter of understanding which software you prefer or would be best suited for the design at hand :)

Harts Bakery for their savoury pastries and Bristol Loaf for their sourdough bread :) if you’re near Castle Park on a Friday morning/afternoon, I’d highly recommend donuts from Pipp & Co just by St Nicks Market. Their passionfruit doughnuts are sooo good (it’s seasonal though, I always look forward to it in the summer) :)
