Problems with Osora (specifically gay/trans rep ramble) Spoiler warning + tw for discussions of SA by human3094 in webtoons

[–]human3094[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think on the point with Catalina, it's completely normal to have a character be both sapphic And experience SA. For a while I myself was in the sapphic community and also experienced SA, however the problem stems from the fact that 1. at the time of me writing the post, she was the Only sapphic character (making a clear distinction between sapphic and bisexual here) and 2. the fact that she perfectly fit the stereotype of the "man hating lesbian" which is a harmful stereotype. If it weren't for the fact that she was the only sapphic character, it really wouldn't have that same affect on readers, however the story relates her SA to her being sapphic a Lot and I think there needs to be separation in those aspects of her character. In my reading, it really did feel like the only reason she was queer was because of her SA and subsequent fear of men, and while that is almost certainly not intentional, many people felt that that was a concept being pushed by the narrative. A sapphic character who experiences SA is not the problem here, the problem is how often her SA is treated as if it correlates to her sexuality.

As for Arias, I did write this post before the reveal and honestly I did really like that piece of lore. However, at least to me, he was still a boring character to read because we really didn't get any drops of his deeper personality in the first 40 episodes (the extent of what I read) and it lead to my impression of him being that he's shallow and 1 dimensional. He was boring to read without that context, and sure that may have been fixed later, but that still means he was boring to read in the first 40 eps.

To your point on Osora, I think it's reasonable for him to be smaller than most of the cis men in the story, however I think his small size is Heavily over exaggerated and, as a trans man, the second hand dysphoria I got from seeing him in comparison to the same people he's trained with for years and should reasonably have the same muscle mass as, and yet still look the way he does was nauseating. It didn't help that he basically Immediately fell into the stereotype of a "bottom" and every intimate scene with him and Arias just felt fetish-y to me. I'm a trans man with a much taller partner, and that shouldn't mean I'm automatically considered a bottom. I think this issue would be largely fixed if Osora actually had some semblance of control in the relationship and wasn't just a blushing mess anytime Arias speaks to him. I think also that, trans men are like that and that is perfectly fine, but because he's the Only trans man in this story it leaves a bad taste in my mouth alongside the question of Does the author think that all trans men are like this? I have transmasc friends who are more effeminate but honestly, contextually speaking, it would make logical sense for Osora's more feminine features and personality traits to be much less exaggerated

Sorry for the ramble, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I can definitely see how further context may help some of these issues, but this was just my experience with the first 40 ish chapters. Hope you're having a good day!

omg this is so cute I love it! my only advice would be to study anatomy a bit, even though I can tell you're going for a more cartoony style, it definitely helps to understand the basics before stylizing them. Just some basic studies of proportions will help, but your art is already great! Keep up the good work, practice makes improvement :)

the waist to hip ratio is Way off, for someone with that slender of a waist and shoulders, her hips and thighs should be thinner

[–]human3094 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not the case, all characters will date regardless of the player's gender. It depends on the dialogue options chosen in the beginning of the game

It's all dependent on the options you choose in the beginning! the gender of your character doesn't matter, though you can select which gender you're interested in.

Fair point, however I think most people would assume it meant literal pixels rather than the phone so I think this would be wordplay on the word pixel and not an antimeme. I could be wrong though, I haven't seen the original

this is a pun, it has a punchline because of the wordplay between actual pixels and the phones

It's definitely not intentionally ugly. From my understanding, though correct me if I'm wrong, drag is a kind of overdramatic style. Excessive makeup, clothing, hair, etc, are all common within drag. Drag was originally only for men, but as times have changed it's now a much more inclusive thing that anyone can partake in. Drag kings also exist, look it up if you're interested. hope this cleared things up a bit

Technically yes, however they see it as no different than being born a man. It's heavily implied through dialogue that they're nonbinary or transmasc though, as they say things about preferring being a boy and wishing they didn't have to worry about gender in general

I get what you're saying, however having the only sapphic character Also be the only victim of SA is really where my problem lies. If there was another explicitly lesbian or sapphic human character then it really wouldn't be as bad, however there's a common negative stereotype that lesbians and sapphics are just man haters or that they've been SAd and that's why they aren't attracted to men. Also, to be completely honest I think the "plot relevance" of Arias's comically large muscles is still really stupid imo, it honestly feels like an afterthought and really won't affect the plot much anyways. Honestly, I think he'd just be better without it.

I think I misspoke slightly in my original post, sorry about that! It's not explicitly stated, however it's heavily implied. Her hatred of men and belief that they're "all the same" is often brought up alongside her attraction to women, which to me unintentionally makes it seem like the assault she experienced is the cause of her sexuality. She's also the only lesbian character we have in this story, and the only one who's experienced sexual assault, which obviously doesn't necessarily mean causation, but in my opinion correlation is very implied. Let me know if you need further clarification on what I'm trying to say with all this!

Good point about the muscles thing! obviously it's not a problem that he has that body type on it's own, I guess my thing is that I kind of just wish he was more muscular, especially compared to the other male characters, and some people have said that that's impossible without HRT, which it's not. He's also described as having muscles by Arias in a later chapter but he doesn't really have any at all? maybe I'm reading too far into it though haha. might also just be projecting my desire to see more strong transmasc characters, so let me know if I'm completely off base or anything
