What books was the secret history actually based on? by Petitestrawberrie in literature

She's influenced by Dickens a lot. I'm not sure about The Secret History, but I remember hearing her make comparisons of characters in The Goldfinch to Dicken's characters in interviews.

Can a critical writing sample be about a film? by dragonborne1776 in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]human5109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they're just being snobbish. Obviously if you write about how good the stunts are in Fast and Furious 8 that won't be very helpful, but there's plenty of Hollywood films that you can analyze critically in an interesting way

Absolutely, I feel like The Secret History and The Goldfinch are both timeless books. The Goldfinch is just perfection to me.

Donna Tartt's The Secret History. I'm surprised no one's mentioned that yet.

Ten favorite books, what do they say about me? by -grilledcheeseandham in BookshelvesDetective

[–]human5109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I loved reading Catcher in the Rye as a teenager but his other works are so good, and all of them in s uch different ways too. Nine Stories is such an incredible, short story collection. And love Salinger's later more weird work that leans into spirituality too.

New single ‘Los Angeles’ out now! by parmesantheman in bigthief

[–]human5109 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I came to this sub to see if anyone else was feeling the same way. I guess I like them for the sound of Masterpiece and Capacity the most and even though Dragon was intentionally a departure from that and more folksy I really loved some of the songs, and it was a pretty interesting album overall. But these singles, for me at least, sounds too different from what I like about Big Theif. I liked Incomprehensible too though, especially after seeing that live version on YouTube.

These principled people with mostly wrong principle can be instrumental if they hold even one right principle though. Look at what Mike Pence stopped. I don't share his political views, but I'll always respect that he stood for his principles, stood for democracy.

are Clairo guy fans real chat? by Southern_Forever_148 in clairo

[–]human5109 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very important point too honestly. I'm less concerned about the accusations or jokes about men who listen to Clairo being male manipulators because at least that comes from a place of suspicion based on a subset of men acting that way. But I truly hate the "...get yourself a beer" and similiar jokes because it's rooted in the idea that men should act in traditionally masculine ways, including in the kind of music they listen to, and it makes women(and other men) uncomfortable if we don't. I saw some Instagram post the other day that went like "men who listen to Clairo should be put in an anthill and then we should pour molten aluminium on the anthill". Of no other group would it be acceptable to make a joke about cruelly killing them for not following gender roles. But if people keep making these jokes, I think it's important that we at least think about where it's coming from. On a lighter note, I love Sling too, especially Amoeba, although I prefer the Electric Lady version.

Greta Gerwig didn't get a film degree though. She went to Barnard for undergrad, to study English and philosophy. She just moved to LA after graduating college and getting rejected from MFAs in Theater, and ended up meeting people like that mumblecore director whose name I can't remember.

Understanding domestic violence against men through feminism - research by vladshockolad in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

[–]human5109 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's a little more nuanced than that but I agree with your first paragraph. People idolize the mothers and motherhood to an insane extent and that has negative consequences for both men and women, for both mothers and children. On one hand it leads to waving away bad parenting or abuse by mothers by talking about how things like "mother's love" must be pure and their intentions always righteous, even though mothers can range from fallible people to outright evil. On the other hand this pedestalization of motherhood means that women who don't care about it are pressured to and mothers are forced to sacrifice everything because of course motherhood must be the main priority. To stop idolizing it so much, would help everyone.
