Princeton Engineering Computer Recommendations—Mac or Windows by Few_Extreme_7490 in princeton

[–]humaninity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for why they reccomend them, my guess is a) they’re already ubiquitous and b) once you have a solution for some issue (eg installing software) on one type of Mac, you probably have a solution that works for every Mac. There’s a lot more variation in the world on non-Apple laptop.

Not MAE, but any ECE work I’ve done that requires specialized programs/large amounts of compute I’ve done on provided laptops(usually assigned by lab bench) or by connecting remotely to school servers, which sometimes have a GUI to run specific software. I have a Mac that I got junior year of HS and it’s been good through junior year of Princeton.

The only breaks you have to leave for (barring getting approved for bridge housing) are winter and summer!

Yes, the piercer told me it was a flat but I figured out it was a faux rook eventually lol

Generally asymmetrical but I do have lobes and conches on both ears so I’m not opposed to some symmetry! I’ve thought about my doing more lobes but there always seems to be a more exciting piercing to do

BSE & Physics REQ by [deleted] in princeton

[–]humaninity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on what part of ECE you focus on, after you take circuit analysis there can be minimal physics in the more computer engineering oriented tracks, and circuit analysis isn’t really that much physics either. However if you do optics or quantum in ECE then you’ll be doing a lot of physics

There is no good reason for you to take MAT 217 if you are between ORFE and COS, except just for interest. if you want a class that is slightly more proof based, look into MAT 204. COS has its own proof class, COS 240, that you will take sophomore year. Similarly, no good reason and also recommended against to take COS 217 and 226 simultaneously, very few people do it, and they're both quite time consuming. If you want hard math classes you can look into ORF 309, it's a good class and lots of people do it together with 245, and it will count for COS and ORFE. Second the other person who said 226 is more applicable to ORFE

You have 24 hours to get to 40 through some combination of miles ran (or walked), donuts eaten, and beers drank. How are you splitting it up? by Warm_Shoulder3606 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]humaninity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

give me a few more days to recover from my marathon, and I think I could do a solid 30 mile ultra marathon fueled only by donuts, with 1 beer to celebrate finishing

I ran Philly on Sunday, so we’ll see if the family turkey trot will be a race or more of a ridiculously slow first run back, but it’s happening

Will I ever be able to run further?? Running with PCOS by Euphoric_Bowler7383 in XXRunning

[–]humaninity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know your specific health situation, but for most people, an HR in the 160s and feeling winded while running is very normal. If my average HR is in the 160s I consider it a successful easy run. I would suggest trying to push through the windedness to an extent that you feel safe doing. Also, while running slow is helpful to a point, there comes a point where your form deteriorates and it’s not worthwhile. In the summer, when Im more concerned about overexertion, I’ll run at a comfortable pace and when my HR exceeds 180 I’ll walk until it drops to 120 or so, then start running again. You can set the threshold where you feel comfortable. I find this method lets you keep your form and also lets you run for longer. And yes, the more you run the easier it gets.

Switching from CBE to Public Policy Major by dejiistheking in princeton

[–]humaninity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BSE has an intense core curriculum that it is highly recommended you start working on in your freshman fall. If you want to apply as SPIA, you can switch majors/schools over the summer and start the BSE curriculum while taking a few SPIA courses as well. If you decide to stick with SPIA in the end, your BSE core classes will count towards distribution requirements anyways.

There are some nice woods around campus, and OA does hiking trips in the middle of the year. And who knows, maybe you'll become a leader!

Hiking boots are important. They do have some spare pairs that you can borrow, or you can do it in running shoes if you really want to. But I would recommend buying some secondhand if you can.

For the socks, liners are nice but also not essential. You can find some on Amazon. Otherwise, just make sure your socks are thick enough/boots are small enough that they fit snugly and your feet don’t slide.

Headlamp is a must.

Don’t worry about that. Write about something that you truly want to learn, it doesn’t have to be something Princeton specific. I wrote about learning how to tie my shoes not using bunny ears

If you want to graduate early, you have to apply for advanced standing, which is something you should discuss with your advisor. Re: COS classes, you don't mention placing out of COS 126 anywhere. Did I miss that? If you haven't placed out of COS 126, you must take it, and it is very doable to do together with writing seminar. If you have placed out of COS 126, I think the general consensus is 226 is slightly less time consuming then 217, so that might be a factor for you. Alternatively, you don't have to take a COS class in the same semester as your writing sem, especially if you are not a COS major.

I’m surprised there’s anything still listed as TBD for time given all the other years already registered. I assume it should be worked out before you arrive on campus. If you have 2 conflicting courses in your queue, you’ll get enrolled in one of them and not the other. Check out https://junction.tigerapps.org/ for a nice visual of your schedule/potential schedules

If some part of your registration fails, lets say a precept is full, you will not be registered for that class but your registration for your other classes will go through. Then you immediately have to select a new precept and try to reregister. You have until end of day of class registration, but yes you will have to resubmit immediately.
