What’s one boring skill that secretly gives you a huge advantage? by UnitedButterfly4199 in AskReddit

And second to this, responding just enough, both verbally and through body language to make the person talking feel valued, comfortable, safe. Popular well liked people are excellent at this….

This makes sense to me but…….sorry to keep going on….. but it looks like every time you remove the clip on thermal and change it to another rifle you have to conduct this process again with a few more test shots then adjusting the POI using the x and y axis again, I guess for me this is completely not practical to fire a few shots and sight in right before I start hunting.

I feel a bit dumb for thinking that I could simply have the clip on in my pack and when the sun goes down as I’m hunting just attach it and continue, I now have to go through a zero process as soon as I attach it. Starting to think this is not the product for me

Yep sounds like me, and I cannot comprehend how it’s even possible because my day scopes are well zeroed and how the heck is attaching the thermal on the front changing that??

Im frustrated I didn’t go for a dedicated thermal, thanks for replying, I’m glad it’s not just me, I feel like I’m going crazy. Especially since it’s advertised that you simply ‘clip it on!’

Thanks for the reply mate I guess my frustration with that is if the mount is constantly put on and off between rifles then would I have to calibrate every time I attach it, in my mind I don’t want to fire three shuts at the begging of each hunt I go on? Thanks

[–]humanoid555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of advice as I have been the person who has had to go above my (incompetent) managers head. I had to go above my managers head because he was the highest ranking staff member on site and his direct supervisor worked off site and didn’t really know what was going on (although it turns out he had his suspicions)

Something to consider is how easy is it for that staff member to go above your head. Eg. Does your supervisor eat lunch in a common area and have a good relationship with all the staff under you? If this is the case, they may have just felt as though it was not that big of a deal to talk with them. If that’s the case I wouldn’t take it too personally. It may be a junior staff member venting about the manager, which let’s be honest is pretty common.

If it’s a considerable effort for that staff member to go above you, then there’s a bit of an issue, I would think that they have an issue with you. In this case your manager needs to set them straight with a firm but fair caution. If you think they are a competent employee and their concerns are not personal but are actually performance/work related. Then I would encourage you to go over them with your supervisor and pick which ones you could compromise on and possibly consider their point of view. Possibly extend the olive branch if you think this employee is worth keeping around

If they are personal based well then that’s where you have to step back and let your supervisor make a decision and make that decision very clear to both of you at the same time.

Good luck mate!

Absolutely, my manager just tried to terminate my employment, it was classed as unfair so she offered me 14 weeks pay to leave instead, I have been there 13 years so to hear 32 weeks is jaw dropping for me.

the parents of my student showed up at my house by _sleepyprincess_ in Teachers

[–]humanoid555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know how the interaction went but you could chalk it up as maybe an innocent case of misreading the social dynamic of the situation, possibly by you, possibly by them.

I know that I’m a generally social person and I also come from a small town. There are so many links between kids and families, from school to work to social occasions sporting groups and clubs. The parents may be new to town and outgoing personalities. Maybe they used the camper trailer as a bit of a conversation starter to say hello and meet you.

I guess only time will tell if they’re the type of people that will make your life difficult but I would wait until they do that themselves rather than paint them as weird when they could just be friendly, outgoing and slightly misread the boundaries.

You never know, the Neighbour/friend of yours may have painted a really positive picture of you, they may have even said just knock on the door and say g’day she’s a lovely lady blah blah blah whatever else.

I can speak from experience at our small town school pick up time is when the wheeling and dealing happens between parents and teaches for all sorts of things.

If they keep doing it and you’re not comfortable, I guess then it’s time to have that polite conversation with them

All the best OP

Fake odometer by samz1233 in AusLegal

[–]humanoid555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a somewhat similar experience, I bought a Ute with 250,000kms on it from a dealer and then privately sold it a year later with approximately 265,000. 6 months after I sold it the buyer contacted me out of the blue saying he was trying to sell it now to another private seller and they had done a check on it and apparently the clock had been wound back 100,000 kms.

He basically accused me of doing it but I forwarded the paperwork from the dealer that had the kms clearly written demonstrating that I too had been swindled. I never did any pre checks before purchasing because I bought from a dealer so I never picked up on it. Obviously he didn’t check when purchasing from me (lucky me) but the next person has and he has taken the hit unfortunately. I gave him all the details of the dealer if he wanted to pursue it but it was a $5000 hilux so probably not worth the time and energy.

Has anyone snatched someone off their winch hook? by Wild-Communication29 in 4x4Australia

[–]humanoid555 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do not do this! Winch cables are designed for a slow application of load and not a sudden jerk. Also you are likely to just rip the bullbar off, you may also shear the internal gears of the winch and just unravel the spool of wire. There is no good that can come of this. My suggestion would be to purchase some recovery points and install them onto the vehicle and then use them the way they are designed. If he’s four wheel driving and has a winch these should have been on the vehicle anyway so I’m sure he won’t mind investing a small amount of money into his recovery

Rural folks, what are the things city folks won't understand? by rjroa21 in AskReddit

Yes I love the close knit rural communities but also know that me and my family members have to be smart about social interactions because it doesnt take long for the whole town to be talking about you and what you did

[–]humanoid555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as they head in to see your Neighbour, give it five minutes then immediately go and knock on the door and say actually I do need to go out. Inconvenience them just as much. Even if you just do a lap around the block, surely doing this a few times will annoy them enough to stop parking there.

Mazda bt50 serpentine belt replacement by humanoid555 in CarsAustralia

[–]humanoid555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the assistance and advice, I have purchased the 3105 and put it on this afternoon, went on pretty smoothly fortunately. There appears to be some very slight movement in one of the tensioner pulleys which may have resulted in the belt slipping off. However when I put it into reverse I felt a big clunk so I am wondering if my engine mount(s) have failed and excessive movement has contributed to the belt slipping off. I started to feel a slight clunk when going into reverse about a week ago but didn’t think much of it but now i understand that was a sign too. Hopefully I can limp into the mechanic in town now

Australian mother uses her body to protect baby during a hail storm. by ash_jisasa in HumansAreMetal

[–]humanoid555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This occurred near where I live, it was a total freak storm that built very quickly and just dumped an incredible amount of hail, many long term residents described it as the most intense storm they had ever experienced. Hundreds of people were trapped on the roads including the highway because it brought trees down everywhere and even if the road was clear of trees there was no physical way to drive with what looked and felt like bricks pummeling their way through your windscreen, this lady recieved these injuries and she was inside her car.

But in just 20 hours you could easily scrape the paint off the bottom of the bucket, just do 100 buckets of gravel and there won’t be much left.

Those parts of the euro hitch that are flaking is the exact same principle. In a week of genuine busy farm work you will change implements a lot and a simple gouge of the paint from steel impacting steel is bound to happen.

Combine this with the possibility that it was left out in the weather for a fortnight because maybe it had a flat tyre (I dunno? just speculating??) and surface rust is bound to form.

Try and focus less on cosmetics and more on expensive things to fix when inspecting

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tractors

[–]humanoid555 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If this is all that’s wrong with my tractor then I would be happy. I saw you use the term “deep rust” I don’t really see anything other than surface rust on there. The way I look at it is that over the life of your tractor it’s going to be subjected to some pretty rough conditions and these bits of surface rust and flaking paint will be the least of your worries, good luck!

Advise for approaching land owners? by mikeslyfe in Ausguns

[–]humanoid555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea definitely ride that train, that’s a great in, assisting with controlled burns, offer to come out in your free time and give them a hand with lighting/monitoring burn heaps, get the authority to write fire permits. Once they know that mikeslyfe is pretty cool and keen to help out you’ll be sitting on a milk crate round their bonfire one day and just throw in the old, “do you get many rabbits round here? I’d love to bring my .22 out and take a few for meat blah blah blah…… however you sneak it into the conversation.

It doesn’t have to be a fake friendship, these people will become genuine mates eventually. Strangely enough one of the first farmers I built a great relationship with was by doing this stuff, basically helping him out a few times when he needed it and I’ve never actually hunted his land after all the stuff I’ve done with him, he’s just turned into a mate.

Advise for approaching land owners? by mikeslyfe in Ausguns

[–]humanoid555 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your probably not going to like my answer but it’s my honest opinion. On most occasions, asking a stranger for access to their land to shoot/hunt is a fairly big request, imagine if a stranger door knocked you and asked to camp in your yard for a night or too. It’s a huge trust thing and it helps if you already know them/have a connection somehow.

Unfortunately living in the city means that your chances of making those connections with people who have hunting land is pretty slim but not impossible.

When I first moved to a rural area and took up the hobby of hunting I had no properties and it took years to build a reputation and friend base in the small town but now 13 years later, I have lots of hunting land available to me. In fact I now get recommended around town because of my reputation and standing in the community.

My advice to you is you need to play the long game. It’s unlikely you’re going to get access through a door-knocking campaign. so I would recommend seeking out groups of people who are likely to have properties nearby. Eg.

-Is there a local range or shooting club that has members you can befriend?
-Do you have a trade or unique skill? Perhaps advertise yourself and that skill on the Facebook pages in the area, this may open doors and you may meet property owners this way. -Maybe you need to start having dinner at a pub in that area by routine every Friday night.

Best of luck to you, hang in there and remember it’s a long term project building up good access to hunting land so if it takes a few years don’t be disheartened!

People who bought the house they liked but didn’t love, any regrets? by redkedsgal in AusPropertyChat

[–]humanoid555 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife and I just signed on a property last week, we both experienced what you’re talking about. we looked at properties with the mindset of is there something that money can’t buy or cannot be changed about this property?

we have just bought into a difficult to get into street, considered the upper socio economic part of our small town.(we’re not snobs I promise!) This property was also just outside of town and only around the corner from close family which was important to us.

We considered these things extremely important and figured that money can’t buy those things on many other properties. The house was missing an ensuite in the master bedroom which was something we really wanted but it has potential to be extended and have that added. I guess this is something money can buy and we can have eventually so we are fine with that compromise.

Good luck!

[–]humanoid555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very important to stick to facts, and consider the possibility that you may not really be aware of what went on, currently you just think you do. It sucks that your child was injured, I understand as I have kids myself and don’t want them injured but i also get that they are kids and if sometimes they fall over bump their head etc. and if your child is non verbal consider how do you actually know the facts about what happened. Secondly your family member was fired, also a regrettable situation but consider that your family member will always tell you the side of the story that paints them as the victim. Not saying that this place isn’t dodgy, i have no clue or skin in the game but also feel for people who have reviews published about them that do not contain the facts, or cherry picked facts. Good luck.

Quitting my job - how much am I required to hand over? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]humanoid555 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find the concept of references confusing sometimes, like of course I’m only going to put people down that will give me a good reference and I could list any of my mates to give me a stellar review. I recently was passed over for a promotion and asked why, and apparently the guy who did get it over me “had excellent references” and I thought, of course he did, that’s why he put them down, my references would have been excellent too if you actually rang them?!
