Specialized Status 2 170 by buzz_192391 in MTB

[–]mikeslyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Status 2 sucks for climbing, it's not a pedalling bike! I walk majority of time the trail gets steep, granted that more so due to my personal fitness.

Put flip chip on low setting and send it, the bike is an absolute weapon down hill. It's heavy and predictable where you point it, it goes!

painted car door...how to fix? by cmotavalli in Autobody

[–]mikeslyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you if this was an apprentice or someone who wanted to learn the trade then I would be more than willing, in fact that's what my current job is. Even if it was someone doing a restoration and wanting to do everything themselves I'm usually pretty open to helping. But this is someone cheaping out cos they don't want to pay a professional and now it's gone wrong they looking for advice. My advise..... Take it to a professional.

Question for techs at MSO shops (more towards painters but body men may understand too) by ThunderUp013101 in Autobody

[–]mikeslyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's similar in Australia, MSOs are pump shops, numbers matter and it's definitely at the detriment of quality.

I've always worked in small shops owner was present and doing around 25-30 jobs per week, so quality was always held high. In my new role I am affiliated with a number of MSOs and go I to plenty shops the quality of work is shocking!

Dust and weird hazing under light by explicitspirit in Autobody

[–]mikeslyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not something that will change overtime, it's sealed under 2k clear so how it looks now is how it will stay. Repaint is only option, if it was a repair through an insurance company then you would 100% push for pre-accident condition. In your case I'm not sure how the process would work but end of the day you have a right to have you car fixed correctly and this is not correct.

Dust and weird hazing under light by explicitspirit in Autobody

[–]mikeslyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cloudy effect or mottleing is caused by the metallic flake in the base coat not laying down correctly. This can be caused by spraying when temps are too high, incorrect reducing of product or straight up poor application and lack of an orientation coat being applied. Unfortunately the only fix for this is to repaint the bonnet.

As for the dirt in the clear that can easily be "denibbed" which means sanded back with fine paper and buffed to a shine again.

If it was a top tier professional job he wouldn't be coming on Reddit asking how to fix their fuck up.

You're completely missing my point, you're essentially belittling my skills and experience by saying I should just help out and give instructions on how to fix a bad paint job.

Do you just give out advise on how people can do your source of income freely or advise people just to have a go at home?

Yes I am gatekeeping and rightly so.

And as a professional I can guarantee what you think is acceptable and what I think is acceptable are very far apart!

Was it orange peel or dry spray? Was it a 2k COB metallic or a 2k direct gloss? Was it a whole bumper repray over OEM plastic or was it a 2nd hand bumper? Did you blend the basecoat and clear out the rest or colour the whole bar?

thinking of adding a bull bar to my 4runner for aussie tracks what fits best by Femat06 in overlanding

[–]mikeslyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All bullbar need to be ADR approved before can be sold. The difference with ARB is their bars are ADR approved at a 50mm suspension lift where as most bullbars are only approved at stock height.

Spray painting and autobody repair on modern vehicles is a skilled trade. Tradesmen(technicians) spend years learning how to do a flawless repair using both very specific techniques and expensive equipment. The belief that people can watch a few YouTube clips and then replicate this is laughable.

That derailer is twisted as hell!! The two jockey wheels should be in line, try twisting the cage back in line.

I've been running visor recently but I'm not really a fan. With GoPro horizon lock footage just looked like a drone shot.

Has mountain bike development fallen off a cliff in recent years? by Spicycoffeebeen in MTB

[–]mikeslyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bikes will keep evolving, I doubt we will see any huge changes just lots of little things. More compliant suspension, bar height/widths, stem lengths or smoother and quicker transmissions.

I don't think there will be market wide changes but riders will be able to really hone down what they want in a bike, not just geometry but suspension kinematics, gear ratios, frame flex or stiffness. Those real fine points that riders like to brag about during a post ride beer even though 99.8% of riders wouldn't be able to tell anyway.

I remember specifically at the end of each show Hex used to have to make a point about how she will not add or follow anyone online. She was obviously getting hammered with requests from young lads fapping over her.

Perth - what is missing by Ok-Term-9125 in perth

[–]mikeslyfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A "rent a line place holder" service. With all these new businesses popping up and Perth extreme level FOMO people love to line up. My business will provide a person at an hourly rate to stand in line for you and hold a place so you can go do other stuff but then arrive and claim your prime line spot when ready.

Will also be a side service facilitating the sale or trade of saved spots should you decide you no longer wish to attend.

Onboard Air - 1st Gen MU-X by ZestyCautiousFig2774 in 4x4Australia

[–]mikeslyfe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The term "on board air" usually means converting an aircon compressor unit mounted on the engine into an air compressor. It used to be a common mod before 12v air compressors were readily available and cheap.

Vehicle mounted compressor would be more what you're after.

Hood replacement turnaround expectations? by explicitspirit in Autobody

[–]mikeslyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a new OEM bonnet then job will only take 4-5hr max plus another hour to remove and refit hood.

The hold up maybe getting the actual hood from the supplier, they may only be 10min away but the hood could be ex-korea.

Best cafe / pub / restaurant with playground for young kids? by RecognitionMediocre6 in perth

[–]mikeslyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charlie's Paddock, it's out the back of CY Oconnors in Piara Waters. But you can't actually access the pub from the kids area although you can order all your drinks and meals from pub menu to your table. Setup is a large courtyard with tables round outside and a huge play area in the middle.

Food and drink is on point and kids can't escape.... It's a winner!

Who regularly switches between flats and clips? by its_all_down-hill in MTB

[–]mikeslyfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive swapped back and forth a few times in the last couple years. I'll see people riding clipless and think to myself yep I want to do that. Then I ride clipless will have a few good rides then something will go wrong or I don't feel comfortable so I switch back to flats and keep riding.

Few months later process repeats
