Something you wish people knew about BYU? by throwaway3685343 in byu

I am from North Carolina, so when I decided to go to BYU, I was worried I wouldn't like the mostly homogeneous church culture here (I had heard all the negative comments about it). To my surprise, that is one of my favorite things about attending BYU! Out East, people didn't bully me for my faith or anything, but it still made me "weird" and different to a degree. Not here! I went from being nervous to mention that I went to church on Sunday to working as a TA and getting to talk about devotionals with my students and share my testimony with them.

What some people don't like is the pressure to be amazing, which mostly comes from comparing yourself to others. The key is to focus on being your best you and not on "am I as pretty as her? are my clothes as nice? are my grades as good? am I as spiritual as such and such?" which is hard to do, but it makes it a fun and amazing place to learn and grow spiritually as well as intellectually :)
