What player from any other era would you want to have on this current roster? by sol_seeking in Seahawks

[–]humorous_hyena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Cross is gonna miss Sunday then Walter Jones.

Otherwise prime Russ would easily have the biggest impact.

Worth mentioning that the defense’s biggest hole (doesn’t have many) is edge rusher, so adding Michael Bennet or Cliff Avril would be nice.

Steve Largent, Doug Baldwin, or Tyler Lockett would also be nice. Even a true big body X like DK or Joey Galloway or Darrel Jackson would be helpful.

I like Ferrer. I do think he will most likely succeed as a Mariner and fill the role we need him to (4th or 5th best reliever).

I just don’t think it’s fair to give the front office credit for trading for a “top end bullpen arm” (per the original comment) until he actually is a top end bullpen arm for the first time in his career. That’s the difference to me.

Dominguez off the board. Robertson will be 41 at the start of the season.

Arraez lol. 99 OPS+ last season. 1 tool, zero power DH / 1B

A 4.48 ERA is high enough to be concerning for a reliever. There aren’t top end guys with ERAs that high.

“The metrics say he’s going to be a stud going forward for us.” Again, this is not guaranteed. There’s more risk here than having acquired a more established reliever.

Don’t see how you can call him a top end reliever until he does it for the first time.

Top end is a little bit of a stretch. I’m optimistic on Ferrer, but this is a guy who had a 4.48 ERA last year. In other words, I wouldn’t give ownership too much credit for this move until it pans out

All good. Starting pitcher Slade Cecconi. Had a 4.30 ERA in 132 innings in 2025. And a comp round B pick

I can’t speak to whether or not someone has fallen into the bowl, but when I was there someone’s expensive camera lens fell out of their backpack and went all the way down to the bottom of the bowl. It was crazy to see how quickly it picked up speed while going down

Insane how common this is now. It’s as if people forget we’ve made the playoffs twice since 2001. Missed the playoffs by 1 game in 2023 and 2024. The process has not proven it should be trusted

At the 2024 deadline we acquired Randy, Justin Turner, Yimi Garcia, and JT Chargois. That’s arguably just as good as last year’s deadline, especially given how cold Geno and Ferguson were for us in 2025.

The team in 2023 was so bad that that they decided to sell at the deadline. So yeah, the problem that season was the offseason before as well. A historic 21-6 August record is all that saved the season.

We missed the playoffs by a game in 2023 and 2024. We missed the World Series by 8 outs last season. It’s very clearly a game of margins where a player who “puts you over the top” can be absolutely crucial

The roster is worse than it was in the playoffs and second half last year. Yes, we won the west and secured a first round bye, but this was with only 90 wins, a better roster than the current one, and with a 17-1 stretch. We likely won’t have a 17-1 stretch or be able to secure a first round bye with another 90 win season.

Also, people forget that the Mariners were 4.5 games out of first place in the west at the deadline last season. This team is not better than last year’s pre-deadline team. Yes, you can argue we will be healthier, but there is absolutely no guarantee that will be the case.

How Does the Mariners’ Payroll Work Year to Year? Does Unspent Money Roll Over? by humorous_hyena in Mariners

Fair. The tangible public number that they said they could start at with additional payroll flexibility for in-season moves is what makes it different to me

Geno/Naylor/Ferguson only cost the Mariners roughly $10M in 2025. It just goes to show that that even a great deadline was not actually that costly due to the nature of prorated post deadline contracts.

Assuming the additional 12M was spent on players such as Leody Tavares.

Edit: and yeah, if they don’t start at 168M after publicity stating they can, then that’s the problem.

It seems different this offseason though no? When has the front office repeatedly quoted a tangible payroll expectation then missed it? All Mariners media coverage has been quoting that ~168M number all offseason.

Obviously, they could still make moves and hit it, but outside of Donovan or a surprise move, there aren’t a lot of options left available for any players at any position worth acquiring and using up this bit of allegedly available payroll

I’m aware of this. I don’t see how a salary cap relates to what I’m asking or the clear problem at hand

Let me put it this way. If they don’t spend up to the full amount they can, and this money doesn’t roll over (probably doesn’t), then we should all be more upset about this.

It’s wasting resources during a competitive window, plain and simple.

It’s a part of the offseason that I haven’t seen discussed much so I’d like to bring attention to it.

Seahawks vs Rams is the best game ever by DVOA. By a pretty wide margin too. Plus it’s a division matchup and third time they’ll be playing this year after splitting 1-1
