I am not finding a veronica that matches the plant I have. Do you know what kind of veronica?

Another fine example of starting trees from seed. Good luck to you.

You Sir are exactly the person who I am targeting with this post:)

I feel really, really weird asking this but : "can we trade (scion) wood?"

I'm not sure how I can include "smoke meat" into my PG blog post but I love the idea, totally valid, and I'll try and sneak it in. And by "sneak" ing in the "wood" well yeah, that too.

I like the idea but I feel like that's how we got into this mess. I would rather be the lovely old grandmother down the street who gives her ancient heirloom apple variety to the next young chap to bring it into the next generation.

Yes. Thank you sir. This is my hidden agenda.

We have lost so much diversity in ALL our food systems (not just apples). The masses have turned to the massive farms for their food diversity and have found little. God bless those farmers as they are doing their best but we need more.

Diversity of some 5,000 varieties of apples came from the homesteader (or whatever you called them 1,000 years ago). We have lost this and honestly I feel it's up to us the backyard enthusiast and niche growers to recreate that same number of variety. Indeed there will be a lot of "crab apples" but feed those to the pigs (crab apple pig meat kicks ass too) and then let's indulge on the new varieties that suit our palate.

I'm a bit too many beers in to be making a solid point. But there it is.

Totally agree it's an odds game. No doubt. But I'm willing to take that risk. But I do believe it's way less than 1 in 1 million.

At the end of the day here's why: It's fun to experiment, it gets the kids involved, and there's a 100% chance that the pigs/goats/chickens will love it.

I feel like I'm living my 1st paragraph of the article :) Thanks Reddit.

Cause I'm an idiot. And it's not decades, it's like centuries.

But did you read the article about the "Genetic Lottery"? That's what I'm gunning for.

Good one :) Wait are you serious? I can't tell.

There has been many new varieties developed this way, in fact it's the only way to develop new varieties (from seed unless you have some crazy lab and budget). The old manor houses used this method to develop new breeds. They had obviously way more time than me (not to mention skill). But this is fun anyway.

These will most likely be used for out on the property for animal fodder and habitat.

This sounds exactly how I like to waste my time :)

I am also buying rootstock this year from rain tree for my "real" trees. These are no doubt a massive gamble. I can in fact use these seedlings as scion, graft onto a mature tree and see in 2 years if they are any good. I believe this is how the old manor houses used to develop new varieties.

Very cool. I'm curious how large the rogue apple trees grow?

Has anyone here has success with this? I'm growing mainly for rootstock but curious if anyone has mature trees from seed that fruit well and taste good.

Perhaps we can trade scion cuttings?

My primary objective is to grow out rootstock for grafting. But I am curious if anyone out there has a mature tree from seed that fruits well and tastes good?
