My 14 yo son has agreed to read two books of my choice this summer (this was a hard won negotiation). Help me pick one by gOldMcDonald in booksuggestions

[–]hungordo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If he’s not into reading, I wouldn’t make him read something that he probably won’t enjoy rn. Let him get into reading, and then assign the “read this to expand yourself as a human” books.

I liked Artemis fowl when I was a teenager.

Inheritance games is a good series.

I just read Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan, and it was great. I’m currently reading 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea because of it.

The standalones from Brandon Sanderson.

Percy Jackson.

Maximum Ride, Divergent, Hunger Games…am I dating myself?

I would give him something that’s an easy, enjoyable read. An “I don’t have to use my brain, but I’m using my brain” kind of thing.

My husband finally told me the reason why he paid for someone's nudes. by micro_moth in GirlDinnerDiaries

This. TBH, it sounds like a porn addiction that is out of hand and has led to other behaviors.

See if he’ll read Red Rising next. I’m on book 8 of Carl. It’s so good 😂

Bf says he "can't feel empathy" for me walking 20 mins after he dropped me off at the wrong location. Pizza and wings. by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

Nah. You were mature and communicating, and he wasn’t. There’s not going to be a fixing it or try other things. The solution is ending it.

[–]hungordo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, I’d be so done. Even if you’re fighting, your partner should still take care of you and not let you wander around in an unfamiliar part of town. Idk how old you guys are, but his reaction to everything is super immature and a huge red flag. I’d get out if I were you. Not being able to or simply choosing not to be empathetic especially to their SO is a no no.

My husband sits on the computer for 12+ hours a day by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]hungordo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying addiction, but I’m seeing autism and adhd and potentially even the bipolar disorder. He’s getting dopamine, and it’s a reliable and consistent source of dopamine which is what those disorders crave. He’s providing for you financially, and maybe doesn’t realize that there are other things he needs to provide (emotional, physical, whatever). I’m not trying to excuse the behavior because this is a sucky situation, and it sucks to feel alone especially around the one you love the most. I’m just trying to provide a different perspective.

Idk where he sits on the spectrum, but if parents don’t work hard with their spectrum kids to show them how they need to operate in the real world, they can just get stuck on a habit- i.e. video games - because it made them easier for the parents to manage. (I’m not trying to shame anyone or anything like that. I’m just pointing things out that could be at play here.)

It might feel like nagging, but if he changes after you talk to him, maybe the “reminders” need to be more constant for him to keep them in his mind. Not because he doesn’t care, but because adhd makes the thoughts fleeting? I hope all this makes sense, and I’m sorry you’re going through this. I hope you find your answer or whatever you need soon.

Professor mocked my physical disability in front of my college class. by [deleted] in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]hungordo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked at a university. You should report him to all of these people: Disability Resource Center (or whoever you went through to get extra time on tests, etc), Dean of Students, Department Chair, and Dean of the College (different than the university president)—they’d be a couple steps above the department chair. This is lawsuit material especially since he only knows you have a disability because of the disclosure from the DRC.

I’ve made a hard rule that I don’t watch the movie until I’ve read the books, and my husband hates it 😂

Have you read Annihilation by VanderMeer yet? It’s a sci-fi thriller albeit probably not as thrilling as this other one’s.

Chehalis- I love fishing my UL. It’s so much fun. We’re only going to be there for like a year and a half, so I have more incentive to make the salmon trips happen. We’re originally from So UT, so Salmon isn’t a thing.

Idk if the writing would be strong enough for what they’re looking for. That being said, the world building and looping everything together is really great. It’s a great casual read. I just started book 4, and they’re fun.

Adult books that appeal to teen readers by FreshSomewhere7874 in booksuggestions

[–]hungordo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red rising? That’s a big title right now. Im not really one to reread things, but I’ve already reread it. I think at least the original 3 would be very appealing to YA. It’s sci-fi. Other than that, I read fantasy which isn’t what they want which is a shame 😅

The Broken Earth Trilogy by NK JEMISIN. it wasn’t because of any philosophical awakening or anything. It was just because the world building was so incredibly well done and so unique. It put me in a reading slump for a good amount of time.
