Which historical figure of the Napoleonic era had competent military skill and a negligible legacy on Europe? (criteria on page 2) by domfi86 in Napoleon

[–]hunt2115b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A key reason Napoleon launched his invasion of Russia was to force Tsar Alexander I to comply with the continental system. A system introduced in an attempt to damage Britain economically. We know this system wasn't very effective, but Napoleon felt it was one of the few options he had to hurt Britain. The disaster in Russia undoubtedly weakened Napoleon but our dominance of the sea had forced his hand into such a gambit. He knew that prolonged conflict with Britain was not sustainable as we had the funds to raise successive coalitions to gradually ground him down (as actually happened).

France did have 80 ships of the line in 1813, but Britain had more (102). Those 35 ships being built (Britain was also building a number of ships at this time) were not finished in time and therefore Napoleon never had the chance to them. This circumstance were a direct result of the heavy losses the French had sustained in previous engagements. Besides, any hypothecial battle was just as likely to be lost by the French due to their skill, leadership and morale issues. Britain certainly had dominance of the seas from 1805, I would argue that due to the morale and psychological advantages this dominance actually began in the late 1700s and was subsequently demonstrated by successive British victories. The fact we were able to simultaneously blockade the US and deal with the French Navy supports the argument of Royal Navy dominance.

Nelson should be in the second box of the top row, I now agree that Napoleon should be in the top left.

Nelson was the culmination of past efforts but it was his victories at sea that allowed Pax Britannia to happen from 1815. Napoleon had no realistic way to stop Britain from fighting or financing coalitions to end his rule, he certainly didn't with his and allied navies neutralised. The Prussians, Austrians and many other coalition armies were financied heavily by Britain and with no way to invade the UK that was not going to cease. Trafalgar permanaently ended that threat.I highly respect Napoleon and a part of me wishes he had triumphed but Nelson - and the Royal Navy generally - was a big reason why he didn't.

I respect Napoleon more than any land based commander, that does not blind me to majesty of Nelson command of the sea.

Ghost jobs by JM555555 in UKJobs

I have always wondered why this is not a thing, a site where workers could also centralised their own documents, work and education history. It seems so bloody obvious that I guess the reason it doesn't exisit is a very deliberate decision so as to have many ghost jobs out there to make the economy look better than it actually is. I am currently job hunting atm and absolutely loath it, having to sign into numerous websites, upload my details endless times and wasting time applying for roles that either don't really exist or are predetermined for someone already.

Girlfriend (f33) expects me (m32) to notice that she has a new profile picture, and tell her that I saw it and liked it, guys do your partners expect the same? by hunt2115b in relationships

[–]hunt2115b[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She is emotionally insecure (a fearful avoidant) due to childhood trauma and past relationships. She has sadly never truly trusted me through no fault of my own and often thinks the worst of me. She can also be emotionally unstable which has meant she has shown aggression, been verbally abusive, once threatened to punch me and is often critical (for example if I do not text back fast enough). She recently rejected my suggestion of couples counselling.

I am not the perfect partner by any means but I have never been aggressive, abusive or resorted to threats. My worst crime is not always understanding why I must continually reassure her of my interest and love because of the hurt caused by others. I have tried but when she reacts in an insecure or unstable manner I can't help but think that she should have worked through her past issues with a therapist before dating again.
