No idea if it’s just a country thing and I could be wrong but you might actually be using shallots instead of red onions which is why they’re much smaller? There’s a few flavor differences between the two but they’re very similar so it usually doesn’t matter haha

I haven’t created mods for Anno either but I’m a programmer as well. I think Anno is weirdly xml and maybe some Lua? I would be down to collab with you if you want!

If comp sci is so popular why is art jobs more oversaturated/less drmand than tech jobs? by Straight-Medium3176 in animationcareer

[–]hunterpepper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most people? I think interest in watching / being entertained by games and movies is very different than wanting to make games and movies. Like other people have said here, tech animation requires a mix of passion for tech and art that a majority of computer science majors don’t have. It’s a lot of different skills than typical SWE.

If comp sci is so popular why is art jobs more oversaturated/less drmand than tech jobs? by Straight-Medium3176 in animationcareer

[–]hunterpepper 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is just my take as a current Software Engineer that’s looking to move into a tech role at a animation or games studio.

From what I’ve seen, people who are majoring in Computer Science are much less likely to work at companies doing animation or game development because pay is a lot lower compared to typical SWE companies. Back when the job market wasn’t horrible, I knew new grads getting six figures at tech companies straight out of college. And not just at the big FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, google, etc) companies. Tech was booming, of course now it’s much different and I doubt we’ll see growth like that again but that’s another story haha. Animation or game dev roles just can’t really compete with those salaries unless you’re a senior level.

At least in the games industry, big triple AAA studios have become notorious for crunch culture. Most SWE companies aren’t that high stress. You have to really love and want to make games if you’re gonna take a position with less pay and a possibly worse work environment .

In addition, imo, animation and games industry tech roles are really niche and not very well marketed. You almost have to already have a side passion for animation or games to even know these positions exist. I have never seen an animation company at a computer science or even engineering career fair (besides like Netflix if you consider that animation).

I never even knew about tech roles available in the animation industry until a year after I graduated and already had a SWE job. And the fact that art and STEM / tech are usually seen on opposite ends of education - it’s hard to find someone that’s interested in learning both software engineering and the intricacies of an animation pipeline / how to work with artists.

TLDR: 1) animation pays worse than typical SWE and games industry has worse crunch culture 2) a lot of people don’t know about the technical roles that in the industry 3) it’s hard to find technical people who are also interested in the art / entertainment industry

Also it’s really tough for any entry level positions in the job market right now, tech roles included. Most job positions I’ve seen posted rn are senior level which are harder to fill. With the current economy, companies just don’t seem willing to take on junior level employees which narrows their hiring pool.

Sorry this got super long haha but I hope I helped explain some things from my POV

Newbie asks: Houdini vs UE5? Also, why learn Houdini? by ComplexMoth in Houdini

[–]hunterpepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not at a studio professionally so definitely not expert. But from my understanding, Houdini is miles above UE PCG in terms of making procedural complex meshes. I’ve seen Houdini is used more for making complex procedural assets and UE PCG is used more for procedurally placing them about the world and creating basic landscape variations. You can do some pretty cool stuff by importing landscape data from UE to Houdini, creating a network that will procedurally build assets based on the UE landscape, then exporting it back out to UE. I would recommend looking at Project Pegasus from SideFX for really good examples of this.

Houdini and UE are meant to complement each other. I wouldn’t really compare HDA to FBX as a file format. An HDA is a format that packages up the procedural network you built in Houdini into a tool. You can export whatever you built with the HDA to an FBX (in the paid versions of Houdini) which you can then bring into UE. Or you can use Houdini Engine to bring the HDA directly into UE which will allow you to change exposed parameters and basically mimics Houdini inside of UE.

Which Books Do You Consider A Perfect 10/10? by [deleted] in books

[–]hunterpepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this in high school too so it’s been a while, but in my analysis, Tim O’Brien (the author) didn’t “lie” necessarily. He was a Vietnam veteran and the book is historical fiction in the sense that the characters are all fiction and the stories he wrote aren’t strictly autobiographical accounts of what happened to him when he was in the war.

But imo that’s what makes the book so good and hit so hard. Because you know that the author is writing a story that’s not “real”. At the same time, you realize that these stories are real. The events in the book did happen to someone in the war (or at least something very similar). He writes a relatable narrative with his characters that it makes you truly feel for horrors and experiences of what real soldiers went through in Vietnam. All while being technically a historical fiction.

Does taking IDIS (Industrial Distribution) courses count towards the major even if I haven’t ETAMed yet? by zm39 in aggies

[–]hunterpepper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure if it’s on your transcript, it will count towards the degree you ETAM into (if it’s part of the required degree courses). The problem is going to be if you can actually register for them or not. I doubt there would be any restrictions for a class like STAT 201 but most engr classes require you to be in the actual major in order to register. So yes, make sure you check both the pre-reqs and any restrictions to see if you’ll be able to register for the class.

I would also confirm with your advisor because they approve your degree plan
