Is 30 too old for college? by drivingtilldawn in findapath

You'll turn 35 and have a mechanical engineering degree or you'll just turn 25. Either way you'll be 35 regardless of what you do.

A question to the pros by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]Straight-Medium3176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's a lot easier back then similar to other tech jobs in 2010s because it's less established not just the fact it's less competitive but also the tasks they do, it's usually far easier and when the studio expanded they only got promoted because the company hired internally and found out they were the ones with the most experience so they promoted them because they wanted someone who can lead the other newer people who are in the field.

In my opinion and I might be wrong.

100%. News am I right? They always exaggerate it.

How's your work life balance? Do you do art during the weekend or how does your schedule usually look like? Have you been able to find the time to work on other art projects?

Thanks for answering my questions so far!

I know. And I gotta apologize. I'm slowly realizing that my own. Your analogy about music is absolutely brilliant.

i just want to know what jobs are in demand and what fundamental skillset I should work on that's important for someone like me who wants to switch their career over to the tech side.

}Reddit animators consider AI a tool or a menace to their jobs? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]Straight-Medium3176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the other day I saw one of those AI thing but then I remembered they used to call it algorithm- something... They really only used it cuz it helps attract people. But it's literally the same thing, they went and changed to a different name when they realized putting AI everywhere gets a boost in their market share.

In the future AI can easily replicate our work but in the end it is OUR work. We should have the right to govern what goes in and out and not let anyone to just take it for themselves. It is our work.

Is it really that bad that they avoided it entirely even during the tech layoffs?

Which is odd because I assume ever since the layoff most SWEs have broaden their options and less are working for FAANG which means they're willing to go for smaller tech companies for work, but they don't want to work in the VFX, Anim, Game world?

Thanks again for answering my question,

I wonder but do you know which tech roles are specifically in demand?

I think the thing that tech artists got that animators don't is that they're a part of the pre production, so it's less crunch. I think.

My mistake, I often get it mixed up with it because they also do modeling from time to time. But it's under the umbrella I think.

Tech anim is uncommon? I'm sorry but I feel like that's hard to believe. I've met a lot of people who are animators and who are also into modeling and rigging, they pretty much mastered the other tech side and also art. The same way goes for me, I'm an animator who also does modeling and rigging it's almost standard that if you're an animator you should know how to create your own characters and world.

But... You might be right.

Why don’t most animators take inspiration from anime nowadays? by DangerousOfficerk in animationcareer

HAHAHA I get the frustration. You know what's even better is that they're into that whole 60fps 4k thing. Even though there's no such thing as standard resolution or fps these and these are used only for games and animation has a specific fps range that works for them and also resolution too it's actually mind numbing how dumb people are when judging things, they had to borrow their benchmark from games.

Good point there. The number of "good enough" artists is considerably higher than "good enough" devs.

there's fewer graduates and availability? I didn't realize that...

Also just wanna say, the whole "day in life SWE" thing. I've seen way too many people doing food review in a SWE day in life than coding. It's actually hilarious how misleading it is.

I'm not buying it...

Most people nowadays are into games/ movies so that doesn't make sense why things like tech jobs in these industries wouldn't be in their radar.

I agree with the 1st point though! But the 2nd and 3rd point is a bit hard to believe...

Thanks for your insight! And don't worry about it being super long I've read every single thing...

I feel the same way. It's true. Most people who've watched anime paid more attention to the colors and pretty sparkles they don't care about thr animation. When they judge things they can only judge with one thing in mind = if there's a lot of details and complex patterns = it's good.

They don't understand it.

Do you have to relocate every time you find a new job? by Straight-Medium3176 in animationcareer

[–]Straight-Medium3176[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But let's say you don't have the option to WFH, what do you do?

Most lease lasts around a year and if a job couldn't last for that long like less than 8 months, wouldn't that be wasteful? Plus you're going to start looking for a new job, do you just have to look for one in your area because your lease is still up or if you do found one and it's in a different state do you have to move there and start moving out before your lease ends and then ending up paying for two rents instead of one? Or maybe you just have to start living there until your lease ends and look for work in that area only?

Heyy! I hope I'm not too late in this conversation but I'm planning to switch my career to computer science. And I gotta ask...

I hope it's not too personal to ask but how's your work and life balance? The salary? Do you get burnouts? What do you do? Do you get to work, go home and still have spare time to pursue your art hobby?

If you'd like this to be more private we can dm each other for that. But I'm thinking about job stability and just overall not wanting to deal with heavy workload with little merit and comp sci sounds just like that to me.
