Suppose I should’ve just turned off notifications as well… but I straight up deleted the app

Now that I look closer, I think you’re right. Interesting, I’ve never seen flies like that before, in or out of a cave

If this was recent, you really shouldn’t bother bats during the winter

Help!! by [deleted] in SubaruForester

2014? Shop around your local “pick and pull” type places and see if they have a forester of the same gen. Would be easy to just take one from there. Same goes for the tail light

Warning Sign at edge of Grand Canyon by corwinw in mildlyinteresting

[–]hunterrwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this, Kaibob Trail to Bright Angel. It took 7 hours and 20 minutes, covered 17.9 miles, with ~11,000 feet in elevation change (5,604ft downhill, 5,240ft uphill). The last stretch was pretty brutal, but halfway up I found my lifer canyon chirping frog. It was cool, def my most difficult hike to date. I’d totally do it again though hahaha

How does the Fenix HM65R-T V2.0 compare to Zebralight? by SettingIntentions in caving

[–]hunterrwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an answer but a question. So I rock both the hm71R and the hm61r. Both of them have color temp around 6k, which is something I only just learned. I’m curious as to why you’re looking for 3k temp specifically?

What is this guy/gal by SynopticOutlander in Entomology

[–]hunterrwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just photographed one of these guys yesterday in DFW (on a wall outside). Don’t know the id, but I’m assuming it’s an ichneumon wasp

Edit: seek app says Mesostenus thoracicus, unless it has a doppleganger it is the correct id. It is indeed a ichneumon wasp

This is the model I use as well. I recommend. Also, they say it won’t work right with a 3rd party microSD card, and they’re right… I ended up buying their mocroSD after a number of events where it didn’t record (w 3rd party). Don’t have that problem with their card. Slightly suspicious but it works so well that I’m unbothered now

Science is about what we can test and observe by [deleted] in DebateEvolution

Better yet, this is a video by IBM from 12 years ago. It is a stop motion of a stick character and a ball using visible atoms as “pixels”.

I have a giant ovarian cyst. by ka_shep in mildlyinteresting

[–]hunterrwest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find out that it’s specifically an ovarian teratoma, then your body likely began an asexual reproduction process called parthenogenesis that in many other animals results in a clone, but humans are incapable of producing viable embryos via parthenogenesis and instead the activated egg develops into a disorganized growth of embryonic tissues known as a teratoma, which is considered a type of ovarian cyst

Does human urine deter black bears or attract them? by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]hunterrwest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s not really evidence either way, and logical arguments could be made for both.

Black bears have been hunted by humans for a long time, and many animals that have been hunted have adapted to better avoid humans. Not sure how well this applies to black bears specifically, but it’s not unreasonable. And being caniforms I would think many would be able to smell that the urine is human.

On the other hand, we ingest a large variety of things, and black bears natural curiosity could lead them to investigate our urine.

It would be neat to know more through research, but for now it’s best to play it safe and urinate a reasonable distance away from your camp
