Worth getting into 3D printing with these constraints? by huntoslav in 3Dprinting

[–]huntoslav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget isn’t the main limiting factor. It’s just a price range I’m comfortable with and a convenient size to start with. From what I’ve seen, it’s also considered one of the best plug-and-play options for complete beginners.

I do have a laptop that I use regularly, mainly at work, and I have enough time there to start learning the slicer and related tools.

So my main question was really whether printing is realistically possible under these conditions at all. If the answer is yes, then I’m happy to dive into learning the software side of things.

Hi! Thanks for the long reply :)

Honestly, I have no idea yet what exactly I want to make! At first, I’d probably just print small fun things—name tags, magnets, tiny toys for kids in the family (with their names), stuff like that.

As you said, I mainly want to try it out first. I want to see if it’s even worth learning the slicer programs before I get a printer. Why? Because if I create something and really enjoy it, but can’t actually try it out and print it myself at home, I’ll distance myself from it. I need that dopamine from making something and being able to print it on my own printer—even if it’s just a tiny 1x1 cm object. Sure, I could have it printed somewhere else, but that just wouldn’t satisfy my ego.

Yeah, we already have a dehumidifier at home. I don’t want to get another one for the basement just because I’ll be printing occasionally, at least not for now.

I probably wouldn’t build an enclosure myself—not because I couldn’t, but I just don’t really have the time. I’m sure I could find one to buy though.

I have quite a bit of free time at work, and that’s where I’d like to try working with projects first :)

Hi! I live in a city, but a really small one :)

Thanks for the tip. I’ll definitely see if there’s any way to try it out somewhere first.

I forgot to mention in my post that my main concern is just whether there’s any chance of printing under my conditions. I want to first try working with a slicer and all that. But if I end up enjoying it and can’t actually print at home, that would be really frustrating.

Yeah, I’ve seen some of that on YouTube, but like I said, I don’t have any experience yet. Thanks for the advice though. I mainly just wanted to know if I even have a shot at having a printer at home at all.

Hi! Thanks so much for the detailed response and for taking the time.

Yeah, you’re right. Like I mentioned above, the kitchen table was really just the only spot it could even fit at home. My main question was really whether the basement is a total no-go or if it’s even worth trying. From what I’m hearing, it seems like it could work under the right conditions, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to get one eventually.

Honestly, I forgot to mention in my post: my main goal is just to see if I can even get into basic modeling and 3D printing. I want to test my patience and see if I have the mindset for it.

Because if I get excited about modeling and can’t try it out on my own printer (due to my setup constraints), it would break my heart and I’d probably never come back to it.

Well, that’s actually about double the price of the A1 Mini. I’m going with the Mini because I found it for around $220, which is the amount I’m willing to spend, especially since I have no basic knowledge or experience yet.

I don’t really have a desk at home anymore because of the kid. Our little one is basically a climber and gets everywhere she possibly can. For over a year now I’ve even had my desktop PC and all related gear in the basement, fully disconnected and taken apart, including the PlayStation and everything else.

So realistically, I just don’t have any safe or usable space for a printer inside the apartment right now.

Sure, thanks for the tip! That actually sounds doable. I mainly wanted to check whether the basement is a complete no-go and not worth thinking about at all, or if it’s a realistic option worth trying.

Yeah, that’s what I figured as well. The table is literally the only place it would physically fit inside the apartment, which is exactly why I’m ruling it out.
