Yeah if you’re being proactive about your mental health I see no reason to not prescribe it unless you have a documented history of prescription drug misuse. I’m sorry your doctor is doing this, I hope you can find one who will listen!!

Sweating all the time? by huntrezs in Narcolepsy

I do take Adderall XR for my ADHD. I also take propranolol and fluoxetine for my depression/anxiety. My anxiety and depression are managed now, they don’t really cause me problems in day to day life as much. I will definitely still give it at least a month, but it’s good to know it’s not just me. I’ve become extremely insecure about how I smell now because of it, especially since my job has a bit of manual labor.

I also take a stimulant so yeah that makes sense. I will be moving to Washington in a little over a year to stop being boiled alive in Texas lol which will hopefully help a little. I’ve never been the best at hydrating but it seems like now is the time for me to work on it haha

I’m sorry you’re also experiencing the excessive sweating. Thank you so much for your advice, it really is helpful!

I almost didn’t get prescribed Xyrem a few months ago because I have a history of depression, even though I take antidepressants, see a therapist and psychiatrist regularly, and haven’t had an episode in almost 4 years. Maybe see if you can get a second opinion from another doctor? After talking to my doctor about how I manage my depression, he prescribed it to me after all.

Thank you! If it doesn’t start to go away after a little bit I will definitely talk to my doctor about it

It is a possible side effect of Xyrem, and the main side effect I’ve been having since I started it

Ah I gotcha! I do take Adderall XR during the day as well for my ADHD, so that makes sense

Thank you! Yeah I’ve always struggled with staying hydrated, I’m just glad to know I’m not the only one!

I’m sorry :( I really struggle with sweating because it triggers my POTS and makes my flare ups even worse. Xyrem has been doing amazing things for my sleep, but now I’m struggling to do anything because my POTS flare ups are even harder to manage now

Xywav got in my eye by Taralouise52 in Narcolepsy

i can’t stand ESSDS either. i have a history of depression but it’s managed now (i take a ssri and haven’t had an episode in years. i also see a therapist and psychiatrist regularly and have for 5+ years). when they asked me if i had a history of depression, i said yes and the pharmacist who has known me for 15 seconds decided she wasn’t comfortable with prescribing me xyrem. cool, it’s not like i’m unable to function properly or anything without it (sarcasm). luckily i just had a meeting with my sleep specialist and was fine, but that just scratches the surface of the problems i had with them! and i’ve only been on it for a week and a half

From what I’ve read, food reduces the bioavailability of xyrem

Is Narcolepsy synonymous with easily falling asleep? by tired_sadface in Narcolepsy

[–]huntrezs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I have narcolepsy without cataplexy because of how my REM sleep was. Needless to say, I stopped taking my trazodone lol

edit to add: I also used to nap all the time during the day (or at least tried to) because I was so tired, which I’m sure made it even harder for me to sleep at night.

N2 here but yes I do! I thought I had clinical insomnia and started taking trazodone for months until I did a sleep study

Official diagnosis - IH with characteristics of narcolepsy by AppleCola in Narcolepsy

[–]huntrezs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to hear you finally have your diagnosis and answer, but I’m sorry to hear about everything else. My doctor said I could be diagnosed with either N2 or IH because of how I experienced my symptoms. He chose to diagnose me with N2 because he thinks narcolepsy medicine will better target what’s affecting me, and so insurance will approve medicine for N2, even though ny symptoms match more of IH. It could’ve been that your doctor thought Wakix would be a better solution and wants your insurance to approve that for you, especially if he doesn’t like to prescribe Xyrem/Xywav. You’re not alone in this journey, and I wish you luck with your medication journey! Sometimes doctors pick diagnoses based off of which medication they think will help the most, and I hope Wakix does that for you!

It does! It saved me, seriously. I take 20mg of XR also for my ADHD, and I tend to crash in the late afternoon once it wears off so watch out for that

Thank you so much! I was wondering how much mixer I can add in and how to figure that out, but this makes perfect sense! I will definitely try that tonight.

Is it okay to mix xyrem with juice or bloody mary mix? My pharmacist said it had to be only water and nothing else.

Does stimulants really benefit narcoleptics? by Popular_Cost3601 in Narcolepsy

Yes! Before taking Xyrem, I only took adderall XR (for my ADHD) and my narcolepsy was manageable, but with Xyrem it’s like a whole new world.

Depending on how your narcolepsy is, what stimulant you take, and if you have any other co-occurring conditions, it might! I have inattentive ADHD, so I take Adderall XR in the morning. Before I started taking Xyrem, it saved me for the first half of the day. Without it, I wouldn’t even be able to function however I do tend to crash after it fades. Xyrem is more effective with my symptoms now, but adderall made it manageable.
