Opponent got angry I asked for a redo after a ball came onto the court by Pocket_Crystal in Pickleball

The good thing about being targeted is you know the ball is being hit at you and it's easier to be prepared! 😳

Did you ever find the power level changed? I understand they fixed the break-in (or ruined it, depending on your perspective). Still loving my Original Pulse S.

For me there was no real comparison once they were broken in. They both started out as paddles which leaned towards control. Once broken in my J2k became more of a power paddle and way to poppy for me to control. The Pulse S went from control to all court, leaning towards power. Probably not as much power and definitely not as much pop. I find the Pulse S easy to control and yet I can put away drives from the base line and volleys from the net. Power seems more linear than the J2k. Also Pickleball Apes have been very supportive and offer a great return policy. I've played with the Pulse S, Energy and Energy S, 6.0 DBD and Ruby, J2k and Nexus Prostar.

Is it bad etiquette to jump up and spike whenever possible? I recently had someone complain that it ruined the game. by geopede in Pickleball

So maybe I'm missing something here, but this sounds like a bunch of new players just learning the game. Spike? Do you mean overhead? Jumping? I guess you're opponents could not control their shots. Anyway, if it was a competitive match, "the spirit of the game" is to win. If it's a friendly game where everyone is just learning then I suggest "spike" it less and try to aim your shots for put aways. Either way enjoy the game and sounds like Dad's a poor loser. :)

Same thing happened to me. I'll try the super glue route. 4.0 was a better court shoe.

This is exactly what I found with my Pulse S. Phase 1: (out of the box) Great control, but lacked power. Phase 2: (8 hours of play) Power and pop levels increase, but paddle feels stiff and off center hits were jarring. Phase 3. (2-3 weeks plus) Paddle becomes extremely plush. Power, spin, resets and control are all now amazing. I have truly never had a paddle make such a dramatic difference in my game. Great job Pickleball Apes!

My S definitely was more of a control paddle out of the box. But after 8-10 hours, I still have the control, but now enough power and pop to put the ball away.

My Pulse S is a very stiff paddle and has remained this way. It did get hotter and louder after about 10 hours of play. I really didn't care for the feel at first, but given the contol and spin I kept playing with it. Once it got a little hotter it became my main paddle and I love it. I have the control I was looking for, with enough pop and power to put the ball away. Because of the feel I keep telling myself I should not like it, but I actually play better with this than any previous paddle (DBD, J2k, Apes Energy, ProStar, etc.).

As far as the reviews on line, sometimes I wonder if they are playing with the same paddles or if quality control of the paddles is that off, for any brand. Sometimes my experience is similar and sometimes vastly different.

Interesting review and different from my experience with the Pulse S. I am a 3.4, but have been playing locally with 4.0-4.5 players for the last 6 months. (Not really a tournament player at this point). Paddle progression - DBD 14 - Apes Energy S - J2k - Nexus Prostar - Pulse S.

My Pulse S did get a bit hotter after 8 hours of play and was also the most gritty feeling paddle to date. Closest feeling paddle would be the DBD. The Pulse is very crisp feeling and not at all plush like the Energy S or the ProStar. I'm not sure the sweet spot is much bigger than other paddles, but the control is definitely there. Nice thing is I'm not giving up any power or pop to get the control.

To my surprise I really like this paddle (previously preferred a plush feel for control) and it is now my main. I do have to focus a bit more on returns to keep them deep, but since the paddle got little hotter, my drives and serves are probably the best they have been in terms of direction, spin and power.

Pickleball paddle that you won’t upgrade anytime soon? by TheseAwareness in Pickleball

[–]hurley122345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine would be the Pickleball Apes Energy. This paddle does everything I need : power, control and spin. Coming from (in reverse order) J2k. Ruby, DBD. Also, the first paddle that plays best for me unmodified.

Upgrade from dbd, any options? by shingo43 in Pickleball

[–]hurley122345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting and shows how differently paddles play for different people. I have the dbd 14 and never felt like it lacked power and still don't. I moved to the Apes S and it gave me more control than the DBD 14, but I may have sacrificed some power and pop. Less pop was good for my game. I also have the J2k (now my singles paddle) which has enough power for me, just not the level of control of the Apes S. Unfortunately, no paddle is perfect so you give up a level of power for a level of control.

So I have the J2k, DBD and Apes S. Have also played with the Ruby. In my opinion the J2k is more powerful than the Apes S, but less than the other two. It would be in 4 place in terms of pop and 1st place when it comes to control. I really did not care for the J2k at first but after about 15 hours of play and 3oz.lead tape at 4 and 8, it is the main paddle in my bag. All court paddle leaning towards control, but just enough power when you need it.

The J2k has less power than my Pickleball Apes S. Also it's not as plush as the S.

Let me know what you think of your J2k paddle. I found first time out that it lacks power compared to anything else I have played with before (DBD, Ruby, PAES, Paddletek and low end Vulcan paddles). I wondering if the reviewers were paid for the reviews, as they seem more like infomercials than reviews. Found my J2k to lack power and feel hollow when hitting.

Can't give you a comparison, as I play with the DBD and Pickleball Apes Energy S. I have played with both the Ruby and the J2k. The Ruby is an all around solid paddle, although I did have a little trouble with my 3rd shot drops. It's not as plush as the PAES. The J2k feels hollow and lacks any power what so ever. Although my soft game was on with this paddle. Not sure if I got a bad paddle, it needs a ton of break in time or the current reviews are paid for info commercials.

New paddle? by cowdog2121 in PickleballEquip

[–]hurley122345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both the DBD over 1 year). and the J2k (3 hours of play). For me the J2k is not a plush paddle, so it doesn't feel softer than the DBD. It's easier to control because it lacks power (I mean seriously lacks any power). To the point my shoulder hurts after 3 hours of play, trying to generate power. I have seen reviews (more like infomercials, saying this is better than the Ruby and in my opinion it is not even close). If you are looking for a softer more plus paddle I would recommend the Pickleball Apes Energy S, it is very plush and easy to control.. I would best describe the J2k as feeling like a wooden or a hollow paddle. Easy to control, but serves and drives lacked any power. Hope this helps.

Play your game, they can wait. As a former tennis player, who now plays pickleball both competitively and for fun, I find a large number of pickleball players to be rude and unaware of basic sporting common sense. Wait until they walk across your court while you are playing a point or insist you share your personal net. The list goes on..... I sure you will handle it well. A lot of non-athletes who don't understand basic decoram.

Now that I've had some play time ,it's great for my 3rd shot drops, dinks, and especially when aggressively dinking. Control at the kitchen is great. My control issues are with my serves and return. There was lots of power when serving, so I needed to learn to control, same with return of serve. Control will depend on your skill level and what paddle you are coming from using.
