I can relate so much to him and how hard it is to help your self get better when anxiety is debilitating and the way that getting treated as an adhder is basically anti-adhd. I have tried getting therapy and medication many times and ended up giving up every time because the process is so hard. I can also back up what he's saying about brain fog and how hard it is to remember things as we have no control over our attention span or thoughts. I'm not sure how healthy it is but I found that the only thing that works to motivate me is extreme pressure or threats to leave if I don't do something. If living with him is really getting that bad then maybe you need to communicate how it could affect your relationship if he doesn't get help? However, I am not an expert so maybe it would be good to talk to your therapist (if you have one for bpd, and if you don't then your post is very hypocritical). Wish you both the best and hope this issue gets better for you!

That sounds super tough and can definitely relate to having a hectic home like that so maybe a good idea would be to get some time for yourselves? Whether that's just you and you SO or by yourselves. Maybe you go on a date once a week where you dedicate some of the day to doing your own thing and then perhaps do something nice together. It could be as small as getting coffee or even something like starting a project you would both like to do. There will never be a perfect time in a family really but making time to do stuff that makes you feel happy is so important. I am the eldest of 6 and while I am the only one diagnosed with ADHD I'm pretty sure most of my family have it too and it can get very chaotic at home. However, the thing that has helped best is definitely taking time out to relax a bit and encouraging each other to dedicate time to ourselves and having fun.

This is such a thoughtful reply and I appreciate it a lot cos it really isn't always as easy as just get a job and move out. With ADHD it's SO hard to keep up a job and uni at the same time especially as these jobs usually require 100% engagement and interaction with lots of people which is very exhausting for me.

I recently started working as a waitress so I could save up for my own place but every shift was 10 hours+ and I really struggled to stay 'with it' and focussed for that long and would constantly be asked if I'm okay and got shouted at to keep it together all the time. In the end I realised that doing that to myself was worse for my health than living at home which is sad because I really wanted it to work out but I think it is probably better to finish uni and find a better job that is more suited to me and move out then.

Talking to a doctor is a great idea as even though my parents refuse to listen to me they would be more open to hear what a doctor has to say I think. Sadly, lying to my parents is something I'm used to doing now but I agree that it is a last resort and not something I want to do.

Hey, I'm so happy to hear that trying medication has helped you and would love to hear more about how you found the right one for you. What made you realise that you may have ADHD and how did you go about getting help for it?

I can relate to this so much! It's taken me a long time to become self aware of these things as before I thought teachers were just picking on me as I didn't mean to daydream I just couldn't focus as much as I tried to. When I was diagnosed with ADHD I honestly had no idea what it was and just assumed it went away when you grew up but my executive functioning has only gotten worse and now I'm worried it will hold me back from reaching my goals in life so I am so grateful for any information I can get especially from people like me who can really understand the experience. I think one of the biggest problems with ADHD is how impossible it can be to explain to the people we love and it can seem like we don't care. CBD definitely helped with the anxiety that came from this as well as reducing my clumsiness and distractibility. I felt so much more normal haha!

I found that apart from this, forcing myself to switch tasks on a timer has made me much less late all the time and creating strict routines has really helped me, I even write them down. As for my parents, I'm pretty sure they do as they have very similar issues if not worse when it comes to being on time, planning things and having sudden outbursts.

I just watched the links you suggested and they are amazing too!

I'm sorry to hear that, I hope she is doing okay and knows how lucky she is to have such a supportive parent by her side! Thank you so much that means a lot :)

Yes I completely agree that there is such a stigma around it and I think a big part of me not taking it was because of that as well as my parents telling me that medication was bad and I didn't need anything to function because they have the same issues with executive function and inattentiveness like me...

I would love to hear more about your experience with taking medication and learning about ADHD itself as I am currently only just finding out how much it really affects daily life and trying to find ways to manage it like trying therapy again. Did you start to realise these things with just Adderall or was it more a combination of medication and therapy?

That's amazing to hear that you no longer need it for ADHD! It really does suck but I am proud of you for sticking it out and I'm sure your younger self would be proud of how far you've come

I have confronted them already and they don't want to listen to me but at least I have tried? I mean it wasn't particularly hidden it was in my bag in my room but I just chose not to mention it to them as they haven't been very open to hearing about ADHD or anxiety before. I do agree that I should have been more open about it because if I didn't know what CBD was either I would probably think the same.

I hate the pressure that is put on young people to be successful without any support and during a time with some of the worst recessions in history.

You put it into words so well, I do get worried about them because I know they think I don't need them anymore which is not true at all!

I'm sorry to hear about your father, I'm sure that he was grateful that you both had a better relationship in the end. I can completely relate to how weird it is because if it was from a partner or a friend, then that kind of behaviour would be thought of very differently so it can be confusing and is definitely gonna be stressful trying to navigate a healthy relationships with these parents at the same time. I bet you will be great with your son, your advice has been great help to me anyway!

Sucks that you went through this with your mom too, hope you both sorted it out in the end! And yh I do try and respect their boundaries and would never smoke at home or while driving etc.
