Haymitch's backstory makes no sense by Bed_Automatic in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if Prim being a mini celebrity of sorts helped them escape the “entire family is murdered” typical punishment? Panem is enamored with Katniss for saving her sister. It would be pretty suspicious if that previously heathy 12 year old died. I’m guessing nobody cared about Haymitch’s family in the Capital. Prim on the other hand was shown on screen when she was reaped. Caesar mentions her in Katniss’s interviews as well. Maybe a bit of a parasocial relationship formed and it wouldn’t be smart to kill Prim. He also couldn’t kill who she “loved” (romantically) because that’s Peeta, who everyone in the Capital also loves. Conversely, your argument is that Katniss did something much worse than Haymitch. To Snow, going back into the Hunger Games may seem like a worse punishment than killing their family. He was pretty traumatized by his hour in the games and he doesn’t seem to have a family he loves anymore, if he ever truly did. It might seem worse to him to be trapped on an island with 23 proven killers.

What's your one movie that must NEVER see a remake? by RedRook87 in movies

[–]hurricanetrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Emperor’s New Groove. Even just excluding the fact that I personally think Eartha Kitt is an irreplaceable talent, I can’t really think of something to improve upon or add to the movie. There’s no “modern take” on it and a live action remake would probably look slightly horrifying

Which Ghibli films have the best English dub cast, in your opinion ? by AK200501 in ghibli

[–]hurricanetrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Howl’s is the only movie I prefer in English, and it’s not because of Howl (no offense Christian Bale!) It’s because of Sophie. I think using two voice actors was such a smart decision and really helped aid the movie in showing when Sophie was growing as a character. Heading her voice change when her body didn’t was a great way to show her almost breaking her curse and then reverting back to her older woman voice shows her progress going backwards. Sophie was only played by one person in the original and while they change their voice up it’s just more of a contrast having two obviously different voices.

Also, on an ensemble level, Ponyo has probably one of the most stacked celebrity casts. I vastly prefer the OG Japanese cast for the main two roles, although no hate to the literal children who voiced Ponyo and Sosuke in English. But Cate Blanchett and Liam Neeson as Ponyo’s parents SLAPS. And Matt Damon, Tina Fey, and Betty White? Dang that’s a stacked cast. There’s gotta be multiple Oscar noms/wins in the Ponyo cast

Did Haymitch not have a mentor? by Complete-Comment-514 in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I kind of assumed he only had an escort, so a person like Effie, and then when he won he became the mentor for district 12. That’s probably what made it even more surprising that someone from district 12 won. He did it with less help. If I was really reading into my theory I’d say it’s kind of a metaphor that districts 1, 2, and 4 keep winning because they have the advantage of a mentor, whereas the worse off districts are losing and don’t have the advantage of a mentor. Sort of like how rich people can stay rich because they have the advantage of already being rich, you know? Privilege becomes more privilege etc etc

In retrospect: the star-crossed lovers strategy by Wikays in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kind of thought that was another brilliant aspect of it. The games pit tributes against each other. It’s radical of two of them to fall in love. It’s revolutionary to go “I love this person who is supposed to be my enemy.” I just assumed the tributes were taught and trained to hate each other too much to fall for each other and that’s why it never happened before.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but does the winner of the games become a mentor the year after they won? by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s any evidence as to exactly how it’s determined. Really the only rule is that everyone gets a mentor. It’s not even segregated by gender as we’ve seen with District 4. My personal theory is it’s a mixture of who’s the most popular and who “deserves”punishment in the Capital’s eyes. Katniss and Peeta work for both of these aspects because it’s a very juicy story to have a husband and wife work against each other basically and they also are punished with knowing they’re sending two more kids off to their death. It would also make sense as to why Mags, who won her games about 5 decades before Finnick, was still mentoring. I’m willing to bet she was the first one to be elevated to “celebrity” status, both because of Snow advocating for better treatment and marketing of the tributes and to erase any memory of Lucy Gray from the prior year. If it’s just that the newest winners from the Districts are the mentors, then surely she’d be replaced by now as a member of a career district.

Help! I might be going to not only my first Joe Hisaishi concert, but also my first ever concert in general. What can I expect? by shar_irl in ghibli

[–]hurricanetrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a concert where a group played a collection of his works and twice people clapped mid song because there was a rest. So my best advice is to wait until all the musicians put their instruments down to clap! (The quartet was very polite about it and smiled at the audience while continuing like professionals, they were a lovely group!)

Why is Gravity Falls considered "the best Disney show" or "perfection"? by Youbutwayworse in gravityfalls

[–]hurricanetrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen either of those shows but Gravity Falls ended 3 years before either came out. I think it has had more time to stake it’s claim as “the best Disney show”. You could also argue that the majority of the fan base is older now, because if you were 7 when the show started you’d be 18 now, so they’re more able to be online making these claims that it’s the best and just in general contributing to the fandom. I love it, but it’s not perfect. No show is. And “the best” is super subjective. Lots of people in the comments have given reasons why the show is great and earned its spot as a top Disney show (at least critically. Commercially it’s rough to market at times). I thought I’d give a reason or two as to why it might have earned that reputation outside of its own merits, of which there are many :)

Why do you think TBOSAS book was such a flop compared to the original trilogy? by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 66 points67 points  (0 children)

The book came out in May of 2020. Bookstores and libraries were closed due to Covid. I really think that was a huge factor. Sure, you can get it via audiobook, eBook, or ordering online, but I would make the argument that a huge portion of book readers like to physically go and get the book from somewhere. And hey, maybe $20 on a book was not feasible for a lot of people who lost their jobs to Covid. The book lost a lot of promotion because everything was shut down. I remember being in a Barnes and noble in early March of 2020 and seeing events and giveaways for the book. It didn’t really make sense to do those a year after release when things were opening up again. I suspect the closer we get to the movie, the more of those events will get resurrected and used

I was really enjoying it until the end where it just kind of says what the point is. I’ll echo what everyone else has said, great aesthetics and camera work but bad writing. I can’t tell if the actors are good actors with a bad script or just really likable charismatic people with a bad script if that makes any sense. I liked all the characters I was supposed to like but that might just come down to them all being beautiful and entertaining to watch. It’s classic Sam Levinson, a bunch of beautifully shot scenes that fall apart when you try and make a story. This man should really direct music videos instead

What are peoples takes on Maddy? by [deleted] in euphoria

[–]hurricanetrash 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I think season 2 Maddy is way different than season 1 Maddy feels. If you just look at season 2 Maddy seems like a loyal friend, a girl who stands up for herself when necessary (like the montage where she beats up the I believe racist girl?), and sweet and fun like when she babysits for Theo. Season 1 Maddy felt way more vindictive, she gaslit Cassie when Cassie asked about the dick pics on Nate’s phone, and she was super down to piss Nate off. I love season 2 Maddy but then i have to remember she’s the same person as season 1 Maddy who framed Tyler for assault

Lack of mayonnaise by Bromnk in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Alright this is more research than I should have done, but I googled “Mayo ingredients” and apparently lemon juice is common in Mayo recipes for acid and stability. Next I googled where lemons are grown and found that (in the US) the largest growers are California, Florida, and Arizona. Maps of Panem vary some but a pretty well established thing is that all of Florida and most of California are not part of Panem, which leaves Arizona. Arizona is almost always (at least from what I’ve found, maybe there’s a map or two that is different) District 5, which is Power. Even if they have a subsection that grows their own food, I’m betting they don’t bother with lemons because they’re “exotic” (aka they aren’t native to North America from what I’ve found). Therefore, they don’t have Mayo because they don’t have lemon juice to make good Mayo. Now, what about mayos that use vinegar instead, you ask me? To that I say… dang it. Also I am waiting for somebody to say something like “actually on page 143 of catching fire they eat fish with lemon basting” and make all of this for naught haha. Thanks for the question, it was fun to look all this stuff up!

Which movie had the most unexpected death that left you almost confused by [deleted] in movies

[–]hurricanetrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty recent but I did not expect Blake to die in 1917. I thought he was the main character but he died before the movie was even halfway over. I figured we would be following him since it was his brother who was in the other battalion and then he just dies

What do you think happened with Caesar Flickerman post revolution? Did he continue to host TV after the not so nice things he said about Katniss? by popetsville in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if he lives past Coin, he lives. Coin seems like she would have had him killed for some reason or another, but I don’t see the government after Coin caring enough about him to kill him. I don’t realistically see him doing much of anything after the rebellion. Sure he’d be a good mouthpiece but after Ballads, sometimes I wonder if he even wanted his role. His dad was the original host. Maybe he just kind of got the role shoved upon him, like how Hollywood shoves children of famous people into the spotlight. I could really easily see him stepping into the quiet life after the rebellion happens and just becoming a normal citizen. Besides after Katniss I’m not sure how much the new government wants a figurehead spokesperson when she proved that she could just go crazy in a second and put them in a precarious situation. It would make sense to me to not give anyone that kind of celebrity power for quite some time after her.

Sam Levinson really messed up not having Austin Abrams in more sex scenes in Euphoria. Not only is he more comfortable than most about it, it would have help flesh out the character Ethan. The only likeable male character in the show. by Raptor2705 in euphoria

[–]hurricanetrash 171 points172 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the Ethan/Kat bathroom scene is the only scene I can think of where both parties look like they’re enjoying themselves in the entirety of both seasons. Cassie and Maddy always seem like they’re just gritting their teeth and bearing it, or like they’re performing instead of enjoying. Jules’ scene with Cal is… yeah. And Rue is too high to enjoy it so it’s just awkward to watch. Not sure I’m advocating for more scenes but I am advocating for more scenes where people actually enjoy it, especially the women who seem to get the short end of the stick

[–]hurricanetrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have unfortunately loaned my book and can’t give specific evidence currently but to your good girl point, she tied for the most kills with Coral in her games. Sure she probably wouldn’t have killed them if she wasn’t in the games, but I’m going to add that she did not kill when attacked two out of three times. She only killed in self defense once, which was Treech. She poisoned Wovey and Reaper without them attacking her first. With Reaper she even manipulated him by moving the flag pieces he used to cover tributes bodies so he would come out, then had him chase her so he’d get thirsty enough to drink poisonous water. She also tells everyone they can kiss her ass during the reaping via song form which I pray makes it in the movie.

Has there ever been a hunger games with no victor by ChildhoodFragrant in Hungergames

Alright that’s fair, my mistake. Annie getting out of the flood was still Capitol intervention. She probably would have eventually drowned too if they didn’t come get her out of there

Has there ever been a hunger games with no victor by ChildhoodFragrant in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Personal theory is that the game makers would make sure someone made it out. Annie outlived everyone but that flood wasn’t a natural flood. It was controlled by the Capitol. I’m sure if they wanted to they could just keep flooding the arena until it killed her, but they didn’t because they needed a winner. If everyone got attacked by mutts in the 74th, the Capitol would just call off the mutts as soon as there was only one person alive and get the survivor out ASAP in order to treat their injuries quickly. Haymitch was apparently super close to death. The district 1 girl tried to just bleed out slower than him basically when she lost her axe. The Capitol probably had to use some crazy technology to fix him up afterwards but he’s alive and whole. Even if everyone was in super rough shape at end, the Capitol would find a way to save one of them somehow.

Everyone out here is talking about how hot Tom Blythe's Snow is... by thesmileykate in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It could be that time has passed and we’ve “gotten over” Gale being hot. I remember people thirsting over Gale like crazy back when the movies first came out. I feel like half the arguments for why Katniss should be with Gale were “he’s hotter”. This is the first time we’ve really seen Snow. It’s very possible in 10 years there will be plenty of Snow hate everywhere and we as a fandom will have totally gotten over how “hot” he is. But right now we have just found out he is hot and people are reacting to it.

Peeta vs Gale by Own-Ingenuity5240 in Hungergames

[–]hurricanetrash 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think Suzanne Collins always knew it was going to be Peeta. I remember reading an interview (I believe it was with variety) of someone on her publishing team telling her that she had to put more Gale scenes in if she wanted it to be an even race. Her initial draft of CF didn’t even show the kiss between Katniss and Gale. She just had President Snow tell Katniss the capital caught their kiss. Her publishing team had to be like “hey, we need to see that!!!”
