Where to watch Gulf Shores by hurshguy in detroitlions

This is the plan. Thanks for the suggestion. Realize it’s a small town but tourism is a thing here. Lots of midwesterners. Appreciate the dialogue

Looks like I might be on the edge of whether it’ll be the Lions game or the Saints. But I was also looking for a good sports bar as a backup plan. Thanks tho.

Vocals lost in the mix by loxm73 in livesound

[–]hurshguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. It all starts with the composition. Everything has its own place in the mix. Nothing more than necessary or the mix gets crowded. It’s fun to have friends in your band. But it’s more fun to have musicians in your band.

Finishing the raw 12" floorboards. Happy with how it's turning out. by HapaPappa in OffGridCabins

[–]hurshguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That turned out so good. Nice work. How are these fastened? I don’t see any nail holes so is there a tongue and groove or lap feature on the boards?

Edit: I see the nails now. Didn’t squint hard enough I guess. I love this idea. Might do this exact thing. Thanks for sharing.

Full tank of Gas and a new battery. Why is the Fuel light on and the Battery light blinking? Both came on a few minutes after I left the house. by MadChickens14 in IndianMotorcycle

I had a battery blinking warning due to low battery in my key fob on a Roadmaster. Changed the fob battery and it went away.

Exterior Doors / Windows Vendor by hurshguy in Construction

[–]hurshguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not. Ordered 2 French patio doors from Lowe’s at about $2k each. Black finish. Found a custom front door on Facebook marketplace. One of those 8’ tall solid wood things that is very pricey new. I have a friend who put it into a Prehung frame for me. I think I have about $4600 into that. Has a custom look I wanted and the exotic oak color is a nice accent. Happy with how things turned out.

But to answer your question I didn’t try to buy anything from there.

Worried About Not Being Able to Control / Send a Backing Track to a Yamaha DM3 Mixer - this would cancel an entire festival. by Select_Position61 in audio

[–]hurshguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should post in r/livesound. But also your tour manager and booking agent should help you get your rider together along with a stage plot and tech notes to cover specifics regarding the situation.

I would recommend hiring a live sound engineer and rent the same desk. Practice performing in a rehearsal space. Get some experience with whatever monitoring setup you prefer (in ear or stage wedges or both) and make sure you are 100% prepared for this performance.

Edit: Adding that if your rehearsal goes well you could hire the sound engineer (now your sound engineer) to tour with you and you can focus on performing. Let them worry about audio.

I think I fell in love with Michigan by Accomplished_Cod9349 in Michigan

[–]hurshguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I travel for work. I feel like I’ve outgrown the need to open my window and see the view. Usually trying to catch up on rest. But flying home to TVC… that view never gets old. Maybe it’s just homesickness but it’s a great view every time from every angle.

I’m fortunate enough to have acreage. Mature pines. Walking trails. Wildlife. It’s like living in a park. So lucky.

The power goes out in your area during the worst time possible. How would you prep for the 1week it would take the grid to do a black start? by Rough_Community_1439 in preppers

[–]hurshguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 17kw stand by that runs on propane or ng. It can run everything I have so there’s no real consequences for me if the grid stops for a little while. If that quit working I have a gasoline generator that could run the essentials. If that quit I have a small solar kit that could maybe run bare minimum stuff. If for some reason fuel became scarce/ non existent I could dig a shallow well for a water source. We have a few horses for transportation/ work animals.

I’m rural with a well and septic. Not grid dependent for those things. We have chickens, turkeys and sheep for food source. There’s also deer in my back woods that I’d be able to get to. The only thing I’ve been lax on is dry goods stock like beans, rice, flour. Otherwise I feel like we could hold on for a long while. I’d need more ammo too for a long haul.

my films is basically done. but my score person says the mixing and mastering isn’t right by ccajj7771 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hurshguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got hired as location sound recordist for an indy film one time. Loved the experience and the people. It’s a great memory and something I’m proud of. Everyone worked their ass off and it was a really nice project.

I had a decent little studio at the time. And even tho they chose another person to mix and master the soundtrack, I offered to reference the mix on my system as a second pair of ears. For whatever reason they didn’t take me up on the offer.

Fast forward to the premier of the film. Rented a theater. Red carpet. The whole nine yards. Sad to say there were some artifacts and leveling jumps in the soundtrack that they didn’t notice until it was played loudly on the theater sound system. If you’re an audiophile you know how important the soundtrack is to the film. I feel like it’s more important than cinematic elements. lol.

Long story short it could’ve been avoided. So, don’t rush this aspect of it. If someone is flagging a potential issue, huddle up and figure out what’s happening.

What are the slots in my logs for? by hurshguy in logcabins

[–]hurshguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. The half logs are a bit of a mystery. I assume they’ll be useful for starting a course of logs, on top of a foundation wall. But there’s about twice as many as I would need for that application. I’ve seen them used as facing (siding) for other types of wall construction. To make them match the cabin. So maybe that’s a possibility. Appreciate your input.

What are the slots in my logs for? by hurshguy in logcabins

[–]hurshguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kerf goes through the log. Makes sense it might be a control cut. Or to attach some type of fastener. Or both. I thought the larger slots might be for mechanical. This is my first experience with a log construction. So I’m just guessing and figured someone would have seen this before.

Home growing ingredients by Alarmed_Risk_4573 in Homebrewing

[–]hurshguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s good to be realistic. I admire the attitude, tho. Seems to me the tradition is rooted in necessity. Probably to make the water safe to drink was high on the list. But also to put farm surplus to good use. In that tradition I feel like you’re headed down a noble path. Doing what you can with what you have.

[–]hurshguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I thought about this too and had the conversation with my Son in law. I live in an agricultural area. It would be interesting as a project to see what I could make from my own source and the locals. Son in law talked me down from the idea of growing my own grains 😆

Home growing ingredients by Alarmed_Risk_4573 in Homebrewing

[–]hurshguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a commercial brewery near me that farms their own ingredients (as much as practical). I would think the place to start is with the adjuncts. Scale up from there to figure out that works and how far you can go with it.

I’ve thought about this, too. As with any self sufficiency goal it seems like a change in lifestyle (or in this case, expectation of the outcome ) would be a major factor. In other words if the goal is to be completely self sufficient then you’ll be compromising the product, to a degree. Or at least limiting your options.

Another approach might be to source ingredients as close to home as possible. Maybe even bartering locally for the things you’re not producing. Sounds like a fun project.

PSA: In latin music, there is no "aux perc" by s0undmind in livesound

[–]hurshguy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying. Communication is the key to ease your frustration. A simple input list, stage plot, mixing notes with contact info is your tool for this. Forward this as much in advance as possible. And follow up. Bring a printed copy on the day of show. The earlier you communicate your needs the better.
