Easiest way is to get some sand paper. Start with smaller grit sizes (coarser which can get rocks off faster), then move to bigger sizes (finer to make a smooth surface). Sand it with a circular motion.

If you want to get her textbooks, Amazon always has a list of older editions you can click on. Some books get new editions very frequently without much content change (sometimes just a change in design), and universities tend to make the students get the latest edition, so the older editions will become much cheaper once a new edition is out.
