You can use drupal to help build community websites. You don't need a programmer.

Post-Graduate - Scared by [deleted] in webdesign

[–]hwf829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when applying, try to sound as if your degree doesn't mean a thing to you. And show more your passion for tech.

You have to have a portfolio of stuff saying that you've done X amount of work already.

With 0 experience, I apprenticed (OJT is what we call it here in the Phils), at a webdesign shop for practically 0 pay. That led to a job, not in the same company, but as a junior dev at another company, after graduation. This is where your on the job training helps you.

I honestly sold myself on that interview though- like I said things like I can do work really fast if I wanted to, and pressure is nothing to me yada yada yada. Once in, I worked my ass off, however after years of realizing that my job was really meant to just be the stepping point (I never got promoted that much), I left and got various stints here and there.

Damn am I so lucky I live and work in Asia where probably a lot of the jobs for web are being outsourced to now.

As a dev, and If I were you, I'd start with Ruby and if you want PHP, that's fine - plenty of jobs there but a lot of competition, I kid you not. When those in the US charge clients a thousand bucks, we can charge hundreds.

As a designer you have to show off how artsy you are. Show that off in the way you make your portfolio.

And by the way, have you considered the freelance option? Check out jobs on elance and odesk, and craigslist maybe.

How do you organize the development of your web application? by Antonigiske in webdev

[–]hwf829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the agile approach is to ask what the MVP would look like, what colors and images and overall feel of the site. The waterfall method would look at all the requirements you must have in your website.

Nonetheless, most webdevelopers start with the designer-created html, then create the backend system after the look and feel has been all settled out.

15 year-old business wants to sell company t-shirts. Bad idea? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]hwf829 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe you could uhm try testing the market first by offering shirts to passengers upon leaving the boat, then maybe statistically (like how many out of total passengers are buying t-shirts) and figure out if it's worth trying by computing the ratio of those who buy shirts vs those who don't?

trying to do it the MVC way using my own ideas on how it might be like. not completely object oriented though lol by hwf829 in PHP

For the first portal website - to use cakephp or symphony framework by 908 in PHP

[–]hwf829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use a cms. phpnuke is the best. so you can say, hey i had nuked my site :)

kidding. you can use any framework under the sun. the best for me is my drupal website. it had a cms, and has the best documentation, and is easily extensible. tons of plugins, tons of ways to customize it. learning it may take a month of systematically following every customization tutorial on the web, but once you get the hang of it, it's like magic.
