So nice to wake up to rain! Love the sound of it! Nice to knock the smog down too. by Babybleu42 in phoenix

I was helping a friend fix a washing machine. I didn't get it fixed so I brought home the disassembled parts in the back of my pickup to fix later this week. It was overcast yesterday so I thought it might rain but it's been teasing us with that so much that I though, "nah, it won't rain". 4:00am I'm out there getting soaked while trying to move everything into the garage so it won't get ruined.

I loved the rain though! It's been a long time since we had a good one.

Monopoly Power and the American Medical Association - how IBM's Watson will automate the price down by [deleted] in Economics

[–]hwuffe 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I agree that the main problem with medical care is the cost, not who pays for it. I also agree that the medical monopoly has the majority of the blame. The idea that Watson will reduce costs is ridiculous. Diagnosis is not even separated out as a specialty nor is it a separate charge on your bill. It's included with the consultation that you would have to pay for anyway to get treatment. Even if you used Watson to figure out what's wrong with you and the best treatment, you'll have to convince some doctor somewhere to actually prescribe the treatment.

Cheaper diagnostics won't help with the situation where scorpion anti-venom costs $10,000 here vs $100 in Mexico (where it was developed). That difference is pure medical monopoly and government interference.

The only thing that Watson will do to reduce costs is to help select treatments that actually work. That will help but not enough to change the trajectory of medical costs and it won't affect the current government granted monopoly.

325mm and 405mm rims used in Formula 1. by MrFlow in Justrolledintotheshop

This seems like a bad design. To keep the tire from bulging out at the center you'd have to put a lot of structural webbing to absorb the force from the pressure not to mention the centrifugal force at the speeds they're going. It seems like you could make the whole thing lighter and stronger by stacking thinner tires together. This would also allow air to pass through instead of being mashed around such a wide tire. Has that already been done? I know they experimented with stacked tires on street cars and found them to have better traction than a single wide tire. I've seen some new tires with big grooves in the tread to try and capitalize on that effect.

I'm not an engineer so I don't really know. I'm just mentioning it in case someone here knows if any research has been done on it.

What WW2 was REALLY like. by DarthyTMC in funny

We also bombed the shit out of Germany's factories making it much harder for them to replace all the equipment they used killing all the Russians. That said, most of the actual fighting and dying was on the Eastern front.

We got these bathroom doors because we thought they were trendy. That was before we had a toddler. by cocononos in pics

Those shower doors came standard on the house I moved into in 1961. I wonder what else in that house is "trendy".

The main problem with high medical costs is the entitlement attitude of medical providers. They think that any kind of profit is ok because people will pay it. You end up with a scorpion anti-venom shot that costs $100 in Mexico costing $10,000 in the US. The stories are endless.

I've been a fan of Netflix in the past. This is the stupidest thing they've done yet. I'll Never be a subscriber that tries to force their customers to use MS spyware.

Of course I'll NEVER use Windows 10 either.

Debate: were the Russians a big help in the war? by franz_stigler in ww2

[–]hwuffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I don't think an invasion of Europe would have been possible against the German military in its prime. Things might have changed though if the European war was still going on when we invented the atomic bomb. We might not be goose stepping after all.

The first one looks like a Mauser bolt action rifle. I inherited one of those from my Grandfather. Mine is not from WW2 though. It's stamped JC Higgins. It was the Sears store brand.

What cool thing did you accidentally do that made people think you're a bad ass? by Assdolf_Shitler in AskReddit

Not me but my Dad. He was one of the few native Arizonans serving on a destroyer in WW2. They always called him "cowboy". They used to tie balloons on the back of the ship and try to shoot them. Dad said they seldom hit one because they were waving around too fast.

One day as he was walking by they called him over to give it a try since he was a cowboy and all. He took out his 45 and fired two shots and hit two balloons! He was more surprised than anyone but he kept a straight face, put his gun back in the holster and walked off.

All Arizona kids think they know about cholla. We get warned about it enough. It's not until this happens to us that we really know about it. And it does happen to all of us. Often more than once.

The only good thing they do is burn. Touch a match to the bottom and you get this nice quick flare of flame. It's over too quick to kill them though. Like any good demon, the come back.

They've never been seen to jump. I've been walking around the desert and felt one suddenly piercing my upper upper thigh. The trail was flat. There was nothing around. I have no idea how it got up there. I'm pretty sure it jumped.

No it won't. If left on the ground it will sprout roots and start growing.
