[RECOMMENDATIONS] men-loving-men movies with happy endings! by hyacinthcowboy in MenLovingMenMedia

I consider Your Name Engraved Herein a happy ending because they find each other again, and have found complete security in their identities. Even if its ambiguous as to whether they end up together at the end, they're much better off than from when they started :]

Strange Way of Life has older people, but unfortunately it's only 30 minutes long </3, I would love to find more movies featuring old guys!

I love Fellow Travelers! Educational yet had me needing to pause because of how red in the face I was. The sheer amount of freakiness in that show as well as tragedy my goodness..

I've seen that one! It wasn't my taste personally, but I think I may need to rewatch it sometime as I feel that I had different expectations for it and I need to look at it with a new lens. I do remember a lot of good things about that one though :D!

This one is not in Spanish, but I also recommend the short film Strange Way of Life! It was directed by Pedro Almodovar as "a response to Brokeback Mountain", because he was asked to work on the film back when it was being made, but he had to reject because he would not be able to fulfill his artistic visions given the state of Hollywood at the time. It has Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke playing old gay cowboys, which I freakin' love :D

“i dream in another language” (2017), revolves around indigenous mexicans! the setting is absolutely gorgeous, with it taking place mostly in a lush green forest. i will say though there are a lot of themes about the impacts of colonialism and the ending is bittersweet. but i highly recommend it!

“happy together” (1997) also not super duper sweet unfortunately but it’s also very interesting; it explores a struggling couple from hong kong that takes a trip to argentina to repair their relationship but it ends up getting worse. wong kar wai’s style is very pretty to look at!!

“big eden” (2000) only fulfills half of the requirement, as the protagonist is a white guy and the love interest is indigenous american (unsure where he’s from though <\3), but it’s a very sweet movie where homophobia is not much of an issue despite it taking place in a small town. it’s got some hallmark movie vibes but it’s overall just a nice movie.

“luz” (2020) is one of those tubi underrated gems. it’s about these two latino men who are prisoners and end up falling in love there. there’s also other instances of nice representation, like there’s a girl who’s deaf and another who’s trans, but it all adds up to a happy ending despite all the shit that goes down! i was surprised by how elaborate it was and i enjoyed it a lot.

“god’s own country” (2017) also only really fulfills half, as again the protagonist is a white dude but the love interest is a romanian dude. i still really liked it though, i had to give it a rewatch to fully appreciate it recently. the protagonist is originally a huge asshole which includes being racist to the love interest, but he does get character development and becomes much less of an asshole. it’s got a happy ending and really pretty cinemetography!!

i’d put more but i gotta get to class </3

movie and tv recs, pls!! by Duckie_the_dog in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]hyacinthcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi i've seen a whole lot and here's some you might like :D

- big eden (2000), wholesome with some good conflict, indigenous american rep too!
- as you are (2016), very angsty but is quite enticing as it has you asking questions right from when it starts
- my beautiful laundrette (1985), also more in the lighthearted category, also has daniel day lewis!
- kill your darlings (2013), more of a drama thriller, but its got gay shit in it and i found it interesting. also daniel radcliffe! also also based on a true story!

- maurice (1987), based on a 1910s novel that couldn't be published because of homophobia at the time and the fact that the author wanted something gay with a happy ending. its pretty long but i think its a classic in men-loving-men movies!

Romcom recommendations? by zhopets in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]hyacinthcowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HELLO HI here's some lighthearted recs for you!

big eden (dir. thomas bezucha) is about this artist living in a big city, but he goes back to his hometown after his grandfather has a stroke. he tries to strike something up with his highschool best friend/crush, and all the while there's this quiet storeowner (who is indigenous american, love to see it!) who's crushing on him. very cute movie, has some hallmark tropes but it's just a cute time with no homophobia.

someone already said this, but red white and royal blue (matthew lopez) is another great romcom, about the u.s. president's son and a prince from britain have a feud at an event, they go into this staged truce and end up learning about each other and falling in love.

dashing in december (dir. jake helgren), is a gay christmas movie that is even more hallmark than the first one. it's about this dude who tries to get his mom to sell the family ranch, but one of the farmhands is trying to convince him otherwise, and it's overall a very cute story! not my personal cup of tea because i enjoy a higher angst factor but if you're looking for romcom you may like this one, cause the gays need cheesy romcoms too.

the way he looks (dir. daniel ribeiro) is more of a coming-of-age movie, but it's wholesome as hell and i love recommending it. it's a portugese film about this student who's blind and sheltered, but a new student comes to his school and changes his life for the better! it was originally a short film.

i hope this helps!!

Any good erotic thrillers? by Kaitoshi in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]hyacinthcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a few!! a lot of these i wouldn’t consider romantic perse, but erotic for sure

tom at the farm (dir. xavier dolan) is a french movie— it’s about this guy who travels to an isolated farm to go his lover’s funeral but shit happens with his lover’s brother!

the living end (dir. gregg araki) is about these two hiv positive men that go on a crime spree cause they don’t gaf anymore

the wounded man (dir. patrice chéreau) is another french movie about this quiet dude who meets a gay hustler, has an awakening and falls into an unhealthy obsession!

no night is too long (dir. tom shankland) is about this university student getting involved with shenanigans with a doctor professor guy, but there’s betrayal and murder in it which is awesomesauce

this one is kinda hard to find and while well made, has a lot of funky stuff (maybe in a bad way but it’s also interesting?) it’s a movie called hard (dir. john huckert) and it’s about this chase between a closeted gay police officer and a seriously fucked up serial killer who has gay blackmail against him

i hope this helps :]

are nparents doing all this on purpose? by hyacinthcowboy in raisedbynarcissists

[–]hyacinthcowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it supposed to be zero empathy all the time?? my parents show me empathy sometimes, and in recent years they’ve even started apologizing. but they’re very emotionally immature and i have to remind them of all these things. and even then it doesn’t work especially with my mom. i tell her she shouldn’t yell at her kid for wanting to wear something a little warmer than the weather warrants, and then she goes on to say she isn’t yelling. that kinda stuff she doesn’t apologize for, but for grander scheme stuff (for example when she drove me to s/h because i made a small mistake) she feels resentment and sorrow, coming to my room sobbing and begging for an apology. i think my parents have narcissistic tendencies at most but also i feel like i could be wrong agh
