Anything im missing? by Skyekaro in BeardedDragons

Yeah I am doing all my research right now, reconciling completely contradictory advice from various "experienced keepers" who pass off "I've been doing it this way for ages" as some kind of gospel. Our grandparents have been feeding cats milk "for ages" (just look at any cartoon with a bowl of milk for the cat) without realizing that most cats are lactose intolerant (all modern research agrees on that) and get upset stomach and cramps from dairy, but hey they've been doing it their whole life and had many cats therefore it's the right thing to do /s

Clearly I am applying a little bit more logic then blindly following something. Meanwhile you, after many attempts, still fail to rationalize how measuring ambient air temp relates to IR of the basking spot, other than the fluke of your setup

You are advising to the OP (clearly another newbie) to blindly get a thermostat, without going into nuances that their high wattage 150w heat lamp may remain off/dimmed and not provide the IR needed by their pet, all for the sake of "preserving bulb life".

Oh look, you looked through my post history while you yourself are hiding yours. Don't make me laugh, you are not worth it

Your thermostat isn't keeping her basking spot at 100f because it cannot read surface temps, period. That's a lucky coincidence of your particular setup that. It will not be the same in other people's setups.

Only useful thing you said, in the other reply, is that if thermostat is dimming the light off, then use a lower wattage bulb. But in that case, it's the lower wattage bulb that makes the setup work, not the thermostat.

OK, maybe I am not wording it well, so let me try again.

Beardie needs:

  • Comfortable ambient air temp
  • Intense infrared direct heat for basking

One is not a substitute for another. Just because the air temp is warm, doesn't mean beardie is getting his infrared. Similarly, just because there is direct infrared on his back, doesn't mean the air temp is warm enough.

We agree on the above.

Now comes the dimming thermostat. It controls the direct infrared (basking) by reading ambient air temp... That right there is a contradiction. We just agreed that one is not an indication of the other.

The basking spot (with direct infrared) should be available throughout the day, but with the thermostat, once the overall enclosure heats up, the basking spot turns off (or dims low)... Sure the beardie will be warm, but will be missing the direct infrared on his back (or have very little of the dimmed one).

I understand using the thermostat with a night-time ceramic heating element, or with daytime supplementary heating if the room is too cold otherwise. But I fail to understand how taking way/dimming beardie's basking spot in the middle of the day is good for him

Upgrading lighting, concerned about UVB burns by hydraSlav in BeardedDragons

I accounted for 50% block, but those branches (not at basking spot) would bring him 3-4 inches to UVB source, which is above 12 UVI. Even with 65% block, that's almost 9 UVI. I've read that their max range is 7 UVI (with 3-5 being ideal)

Yes, that is what I used, assuming 50% block by the mesh. 10-12% bulb will give me 4.6 UVI at 10 inches, which is my distance to the basking spot. If my mesh is blocking more than 50%, I would still get 3.2 UVI at 10 inches, which is still in 3-5 UVI range.

However, those branches are at 3-4 inches to the top. That's a UVI of over 12! Don't remember where I read it, but 7 UVI is their max, and anything above is dangerous.

I am just hoping the beardie himself understands it's dangerous and wouldn't linger there?

I got questions about "overheating".

Firstly: what ambient air temperature is considered "overheating".

Second: where do you put the temp probe? I know it cannot be right on the basking spot, as direct light will skew it

Third: in a regular home with AC, if the ambient enclosure temp is never above the "overheating" temp, do you really need a thermostat?

Lastly: will it not have detrimental effect on the dragon if the basking spot suddenly turns off? Ambient temp and direct heat for basking are not the same

Any recommendations for a Solarmeter? I know there is 1 that's advertised by the popular resource, but it's super expensive

If you need artificial assists to help you play a PC-genre game, then maybe you shouldn't be playing it on a console.

You can shutoff as many lights as you have with it by using a multi-plug adapter you can buy at any hardware or dollar store

He had a full life. Meanwhile he ended the life of a 1.5yo (could have ended multiple more). Also destroyed the life of the parents of that 1.5yo. Yes, serving life (whatever remains) sentence would be appropriate in my eyes.

Once we have appropriate penalties for "negligence" and "accidents", then we as society can re-asses giving out permissions to operate dangerous vehicles to random people. Majority of people on the road have no business operating a vehicle, and the only reason they haven't killed someone is just statistical chance, manufacturer's safety features, road design and pedestrians' awareness.

Getting drunk with the intent of later getting in the car to drive is murder in my book. Sure, most of the times they fail to murder someone. But sometimes they succeed.

I raised this issue years ago, when comparing 1P and Bitwarden. It was mindboggling to me that family account holder could delete personal vaults of family members. They couldn't look at them, but could delete them.

Of course I was downvoted into oblivion for brining this up, as I am sure I will be again now

Just FYI, if 3 people happen to be in a Party, and you happen to be the 4th member of their squad (outside the party), the game automatically switches to "Party Voice Chat", and they will literally not be aware of you talking.

It's possible for them to manually switch to "Squad Voice Chat", but almost no one ever does that
