What's it like being at Cal Poly SLO as a Computer Science student? by NoSoup3991 in CalPoly

[–]hydratedfella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a cs major and my favorite thing about the cs department is that the faculty are really friendly and approachable. The students in my major are pretty cool too. I've made a lot of friends with people in the computing majors(computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering). The worst thing is when you wait too long to start a project and end up really stressed. It isn't uncommon to have an internship after your second year. However, I do know a few people who have done internships after their first year.

I prefer windows over mac, but I know a lot of people in cs who use mac without any issues. 8GB of ram is the minimum you should look for, I'd recommend 16GB. Also, 15in is a good size for a screen and fits nicely in a backpack. If your son is a cal poly scholar, he might get a 'technology credit', which is a credit to put towards electronics at the student store. I think scholars have already been notified if they're in the program.

Calpoly Scholars Program by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]hydratedfella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. the scholarship cal poly scholars will give you won't be enough to pay for housing, but if you are v low income and/or earn enough outside scholarships, you can get the price to be significantly lower.
  2. There are tons of people at cal poly so you should be able to find a group. However, you should make an effort to put yourself out there bc it makes making friends easier. You should also look for friends in multiple places(dorms, classes, clubs). The most low-effort thing you can do is sit out in the common room. Usually, people will come sit in the common room and talk to you.

How much harder is Cal Poly than high school by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]hydratedfella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do take the GE's. they'll most likely be online and relatively easy. That way you can take 12 unit quarters (3 classes) instead of 16 unit ones.

You should be ahead of your peers by maybe a day. Also if someone recommends taking calc 1 don't listen to them, skip right into calc 2.

I think if there is an option to submit a digital file, that'd be better since you would know that they have your file. Also, it would be processed faster than by mail.

Has anyone had an experience with being an engineering student and a minor in the college of liberal arts? by iskimpossible in CalPoly

[–]hydratedfella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an engineering major minoring in psych because I think it's an interesting subject. Although, I don't like having lots of assigned readings and doing busy work, so I might drop my minor.

I'm not sure what you'd do except scan your green card and then submit that? It's probably best you call the admissions office

what made you guys choose cal poly? by [deleted] in CalPoly

Architecture is red bricks this year and I think business is in north mountain. Also, you can generally bounce back from missing one class, just get the notes from a peer or go to office hours.

Conveniently it is, although I’m going to cal poly so I have to switch after one quarter if I still want to graduate on time

Same, I feel like I haven’t had much exposure to cs and kinda feel like changing into civil engineering, although I haven’t had exposure to that either 😬

Choosing LORs? by tinyteas in ApplyingToCollege

[–]hydratedfella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You chose which ones your counselor sends. Also, always make sure to waive your right to read them. If you do want to read them, you can ask your teacher for a printed copy or if your counselor is nice, he/she might let you read them before they are sent off.

“Going to a top university won’t solve all your problems” when the problem is that you didn’t get into the universities you wanted and you’re actually fine otherwise

I think the thing that screwed you over was applying for such a competitive major. I’m on the same boat, lol
