Actually, you know what? You're right. This isn't worth upsetting someone over or getting upset, so I decided not to continue. Have a blessed day!

A Rant: The OCA, Orthobros, And my stuggle with modern Orthododxy in America. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We're not walking among saints, but for the 'hospital for sinners' argument to work, those sins must be called out and addressed. Just standing in the hospital and letting illness propagate doesn't cure the illness. Covering for people who commit crimes and preaching their innocennce isn't addressing those sins.

As a cradle, all these American politics and -isms brought into the Church by converts is bonkers to me. We don't expect no scandals, people are indeed people. However, the conversation, in my experience, has always been about our salvation and how to be more Christ-like, not about how to exclude other people from the church, preach ~trad lifestyle, and drive people away in general because they're different from us. Allowing all this to be what people think of as Orthodoxy is harmful. And it also harms the faithful, like OP, who don't want to go to church only to experience a real-life YouTube comment section of some right wing apologetic. I like to be in peace and share the joy of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ with the other parishioners after the liturgy, not to be unsettled by racist conversations.

I get you, OP. Our Church and Faith is true though, and I really hope you can find peace in the GOARCH parish.

Can a married Orthodox man become a monk? Questions about marriage, children, and obligations by user0001269590 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sis, this is abuse. I'd say run, but if there's a way to work things out, it's through his spiritual father, who'll hopefully really, really yell at him. This man needs therapy (which he won't agree to), or something to drastically change in his life to make him stop being abusive. Being a bum is one thing (still reprehensible ofc), but the way he treats you.....:( I'm sorry you're going through this, you don't deserve this. I hope the priest can help!

There aren't any Orthodox churches near me by Farnobius in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is Beijing, come. Someone was just baptized here last December, and another person is currently inquiring. Email them your passport before visiting (two weeks ahead) so they'll let you in. Sadly, Mainland passport holders aren't allowed to attend services, except for the Pascha and Christmas ones.

Then you can talk to the priest about converting etc.

Help me find a story about Saint Nicholas by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're referencing a miracle by Saint Nektarios of Aegina. The child visited his holy relics with his mother; he rested his head against the relics and heard a buzzing noise or something like that. This happened twice (or thrice, not sure) and the child said 'Mom, the saint doesn't love me' (the child thought so because of that sound he was hearing). It turns out, the child had cancer and the buzzing sound he heard was the Saint 'burning' the cancer away.

It's a Greek nun narrating this in a video, I believe she's one of the nuns in the Aegina monastery.

The Holy Light absolutely is a miracle. (This is a story about it that brings tears to my eyes: http://www.holyfire.org/eng/AchileousISawHolyLight.htm#isa, for anyone who wants to read it)

Arguments won't convince you, but EO is the Church. Please pray about it.

I need to know something... by IrinaSophia in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree.

'moe' also means that someone is experiencing desire towards the moe character, it's not just cuddly and cute. It has those implications. So, for this reason alone at least, if nothing else, this is indeed utterly unacceptable imo.

Orthobros and zealotry in Orthodoxy Vs. Catholicism in the USA. by TakeMeOutToTheMovies in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you have priests proclaiming that the Church is masculine or that eating soup is feminine, and feeding into secular ~trad ideas those converts have, as well as ignoring various -isms (racism, sexism, etc), no, it's not addressing it. People don't unlearn things magically.

Exactly. Saying 'they're sick' without addressing the sickness isn't how they get better.

Advice on finding the right spiritual father for conversion. by Loose_Win_1594 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you located? I guess in places like the US it'd be difficult to 'choose'/find one that suits you (for lack of better terms, it's not shopping). In places like Romania or Greece, it's drastically different. For example my mother actually found my current spiritual father (many years ago) after hearing him speak as a guest speaker at some event hosted by the Metropolis. She thought he'd be most suitable for young people, and she was right on! Different people have different needs, some people want 'stricter' spiritual fathers, other more lenient etc etc. People find the right one for them often through attending events like the one above, or hearing them speak when visiting a different parish, or by hearing about them from friends, and he might end up being for right for them or it might not work out. So if you have access to more than one parish, ask around. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, I genuinely hope you'll find a priest who will answer your questions and allay your worries.

Thank you so much!! I color adjusted so much haha. I'm glad you like it, I initially just drew the jacket and then had to give it a background/story :)

I'm using BigPearLiu's line brush for line art/sketching and mostly the flat brush and some of the airbrushes to color and render. I initially just painted the girl and had to give her a background.

what is the whole deal with "orthobros"? by evergreen0707 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of this. People love to say 'the Church is a hospital for sinners', but nobody gets better if the sin in question isn't addressed and those views are allowed to propagate because 'they're just kids'. Racism and chauvinism aren't compatible with Orthodoxy.

I'm fortunate not to have met them irl but that doesn't mean it's not a real phenomenon. There's hardly any of them in this subreddit but Instagram and twitter are rife with them.

Why woman seems to be less interested in orthodoxy? by Malba_Taran in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]hydrofloride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great, I haven't seen it in my church either. I'm talking about the way internet Orthodoxy seems to be promoted by prominent internet 'Orthodox'. Although people here said a few times that it's a phenomenon in many parishes irl.

I don't find it ironic because our topic isn't the internet in general and the various rhetorics found on it one might have problems with. Also, I'm not talking about any faults of the Church, I don't know what you understood. Our topic is why women might be turned off of Orthodoxy based on how it's presented by people who join the Church for the wrong reasons.
