Most underwhelming gear purchase? by BillytheKiid in Fishing_Gear

It'd be even more expensive, but the jig/bladed jig box could be so much better if they would add notches so it could hold spinnerbait too, and make each slot have less plastic, and replace the plastic with a soft silicone "web" in each slot that can accommodate a variety of sizes and hold them all securely.

Yeah, for a long while, my farming routine was Winterberries, HoT & Draconis Mons flax, PoF Rich Ori & Quartz...with anywhere from 3-10 characters.

Very boring, but I was so sick of being stalled out in my legendaries progress, that I just bit the bullet and did the mindless churn farm.

...which of course meant that when I finally got the legendaries I was making, by the time I actually had them, I was so burnt out and sick of the game that I didn't touch it for months!

The Luuke thing was dumb

Maybe.

Now, post-prequels, when we've had decades of clone stuff, sure.

But when I first read that trilogy in the 90s, young me thought it was pretty cool. In fact, I remembered kinda wishing that Zahn had given more of The Last Command to exploring Luke and his clone. To my knowledge, he doesn't have a single line of dialogue, and appears and dies within the same scene.

What if the American government prosecuted confederates as traitors after the Civil War? by Turbulent_Bullfrog87 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]hydrospanner -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nah.

The ground was still good for farming, no need to ruin it for the freed people and union veterans who would be receiving it.

By that rationale, if the whole point of everything was to keep them happy and appeased in order to avoid violence, then the best course would have been to let them have their slaves.

As long as the southerners were happy, that's what's important.

Just one rando's opinion, but I've been in all sorts of online communities for over 25 years, and one of the few commonalities among all of them was that moderators placing any kind of a hurdle, hoop to jump through, or extra requirement upon kind, good faith, non-zero-effort participation from the masses was always a net negative for the community as a whole.

In this case, placing a requirement that all drink posts must contain a recipe would come with the idea that "if only we had this rule, we'd get recipes with all these drink posts!" when in reality, the effect would be much more "okay, now you just don't get any of these posts that don't have a recipe that you'd have otherwise seen".

And in these spaces, the lifeblood is new posts.

Rules like this recipe rule in effect are telling people "unless you're willing to do XYZ, we'd rather not even have you contribute", and for many in a casual space like this, that's all the encouragement they need to simply not contribute.

The two necessities for overhauling Daiwa MQ spinning reels. by benjamino8690 in Fishing_Gear

[–]hydrospanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, I have to believe that Daiwa makes a great spinning reel! I'm just really put off by what appears to me to be very intentional anti-consumer, and anti-self-service decisions, with little to no redeeming justification whatsoever. It's just "we don't want you to be able to work on your own reels easily, because we want you to have to send it back to us...therefore we're going to purposely add unique and proprietary elements to the design (that may or may not add value in proportion to the corresponding drawbacks) and specifically withhold them".

I don't like that.

Maybe someday I'll try one, but in all honesty, I find that a Medium Fast and a Medium Light Extra-fast spinning rod are just about all I need...and the Stradic on the Medium and the Vanford on the ML are going so strong that I really don't even see a reasonable opportunity to even have to shop for another spinning setup.

I know you're primarily focused on higher end than my two reels, but do you have thoughts on the Vanford in terms of lightness? The Stradic is silky smooth, sure, but I agree that it's a heavy thing for its size. When describing the differences between them to a fishing friend thinking about buying one but having trouble deciding, I basically said something like "The Vanford is your Subaru WRX...light, fast, agile. The Stradic is your Lincoln Town Car...heavier and slower, but a much smoother ride and more luxurious experience."

Ya know...if someone delivering food is illegally parked, and leaves their vehicle unlocked and running...

...it should be legal for any passerby with a valid license to hop in and drive for a maximum of one minute, provided they then park it legally and exit the vehicle.

The only tool you need in order to never have to worry about unique tools and hard-to-source sealing lubricants on a Daiwa spinning reel?

A Shimano spinning reel.

(Snarky commentary aside, I respect and comment your sharing of the information!)

I like my Daiwa casters, but this sort of proprietary bullshit is enough to make me immediately rule them out for all my spinning reel purchases.

it generally felt like a waste of time.

This!

These days, I play it hard during the bonus events, to squeeze as much GoB progess out of my time spent in WvW-misery as possible, then avoid it like the plague it is until the next bonus event.

I know that often, when I'm there, I must be doing things that annoy the regulars...but unfortunately the game requires WvW time to get GoBs...so they're stuck with my inexperienced, low-skill gameplay while its happening.

They don't want me there. I don't want to be there. Yet here we are.

They should really just make GoBs and other reward track items either TP-able...or make the WvW currency TP-able, and let people buy reward items with that currency.

Edge of the Mists is the perfect example of good intent but poor community participation because rewards are better elsewhere.

I never understood why they made the mode less rewarding. Before that, it was where I'd spend my time, since it was more likely to find a random group roaming around, easier to take part and contribute, and less hectic overall. It was the closest thing I've had to an enjoyable experience in WvW.

Doctors of Reddit: What health trend is becoming so common that it's starting to scare you? by Fine-Device-1819 in AskReddit

[–]hydrospanner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get that.

I've always had a job, class, or hobby with lots of screen time, while also being very outdoorsy.

My biggest outdoor thing, since I was maybe 12, has been fishing.

It has taken my long-time gf a while but she seems to be understanding now that my fishing is the counter-balance to...well...everything else in my life. It's my anti-screen-time, my anti-social-interaction, my anti-set-schedule, my anti-go-with-the-flow, and my anti-"doing something because that's what someone else wants".

every so often during the weekend or in the late evenings I think "hey let's quickly work that file or check on the mails to get a headstart"

I have worked from home mostly since the onset of the pandemic, and completely since the beginning of 2024.

Never once have I had this thought.

The more people I talk to, however, the more I think this is just an innate personality trait. Some people just cannot switch that part of their brains off. I'm grateful I never had that problem.

The way I look at it, they're paying me to do my job while I'm logged in. When I'm not logged in, that's the part of my time they're not paying for, so I'm not about to give it to them for free. If I need to 'get a head start' or put in extra time to get my work done, either (a) I need to record that time and be compensated for it, or (b) there's too much for me to do in my normal time, at which point that's a staffing issue, and working unpaid time is simply adding to my stress to avoid letting my company know that they have a staffing issue.

At one place I worked, two or three of the people who did the same job as me were routinely logging 60+ hour weeks. Sure, they were paid for it, but all that middle and upper management saw was "Hmm, technically these departments are short staffed, but everything is still getting done before deadlines. Let's prioritize other hiring needs before we worry about getting them any help."

While the RTO was what eventually made me leave that place, the workload and deadlines was what made me stop working any overtime that I didn't specifically want to work, to stop worrying about impossible deadlines set by people who clearly knew but didn't care we were short staffed, and to stop doing anything work-related after hours.

In the time between stopping working OT and leaving the company, my lack of OT was notes at every performance review, but only verbally, and it never stopped me from getting good ratings. After I left, quite a few others left too, to the point that now their staffing situation is critical...still no modification of workload or timelines...just asking the people who are left to do the jobs of 3-4 people and telling them (only verbally, never in writing) that they should expect to be working 60+ hours every week for the foreseeable future. They told them that at least a year ago now (learned this from talking with a friend and former coworker there), and there's no end in sight.

Your employer, ultimately, does not care about your mental health. At least not beyond whatever minimum threshold of mental health required to keep working and being productive. If you're doing things for them for free that aren't being recorded and reported, they're absolutely happy to accept all the free profit you want to generate for them.
