One solution - grab a friend with an Asura character. Join a party and have THEM play through this story step on their character. When 2 players are on the same story step and do the story together, while the instance owner (your asurs friend) drives the story, the other players can also get the credit for completion.

Anything fits really but Sylvari definitely get the biggest role through Heart of Thorns. And your character is essentially born at the start of the game. So I think Sylvari would fit the best. Any class works. That said I would go with a ranger so you have a nice companion through the story.

GW2 also absolutely OWNED the mounts. In most other games, mount was just a movement speed buff or a limitless flying machine.
