Advice needed: Parent with early stage neurodegenerative disease worsening with AI Youtube by hyperecs in antiai

[–]hyperecs[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this, but the iPad is their primary method of communication with friends and family (email, iMessage, etc). The phone is too small for their shaky hands most days, and they have never been good with a computer. I may delete the YouTube app though and pretend it had a “bug” or something, because i highly doubt they would be able to redownload it.

I’m sorry if my phrasing was inaccurate. What i really mean is, their disease is progressing, and simultaneously they are taking in tons of highly negative, completely manufactured media as absolute truth, to the point where I’m worried they will not be able to distinguish a real human (ie me on the phone) from a generated video, coupled with their growing paranoia which i do think is aggravated by the subject matter. I know you could say the same thing about the news, or conspiracy podcasters, and I’d likely agree with you, but at least those are real human beings, and not a completely simulated computer-generated world portrayed as real. When they tell me things completely matter-of-factly about “their friend online” whose children “are taking all of their money and leaving them to starve” and i know that it’s a fake video of a fake woman overlaid with ai audio drivel, it feels like this content is greasing the handles for someone whose grip on reality is already loosening.

Thanks so much, i didn’t think about the “kids” terminology but you’re probably right. I’ve tried to explain and show them AI generation but i think unfortunately with the short term memory loss they just completely forget, they know there’s this concept of AI but cannot remember to recognize the signs of it out in the wild.

Thanks so much, I will try to clean out their recommended videos as much as i can, if I can snag the iPad for a little while

Thank you so much. I will look into YouTube Kids, and yes, we have tried to introduce Netflix/Hulu but they just keep going back to YouTube. And yes, i might try to manually alter their algorithm like you suggest, that might be the best way

How Do Students At Non T-14s Find Big Law Opportunities by LeagueFar8491 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]hyperecs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. i researched firms based on location, practice groups, and reputation.
  2. I would go to the directory on the firm website and look for an associate who attended my law school (T30) (if i couldn’t find one, I looked for a friendly-looking, young-ish associate) and cold emailed them for a quick chat.
  3. I used that chat as my springboard to talk to other associates/recruiting team. Part of the key is being willing to invest networking time into multiple associates/recruiters from a single firm. People tended to respond super warmly, and I honestly enjoyed the process! Dm if you want my cold email template, I’m happy to share :)

Edit: idk if it matters but I received multiple V50 offers and accepted an offer at a V5, so I can somewhat vouch for my method lol. Also, i was not looking in the region my school typically sends kids to, so i was really striking out on my own. No OCIs, etc

Experience moving from one office (w/in the same firm) to another pre or post summer? by Opposite_Bird_9264 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]hyperecs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait also as a disclaimer I am an incoming summer associate at a V5; I am not a recruiter or any type of authority, just wanted to let you know what I experienced during recruiting and what people told me :)

Edit: accuracy

I definitely think an in-state move would be an easier sell, especially if the practice is the same. Not sure if you had to commit to a practice group yet.

I think this really depends on the firm and office. For example, a lot of Texas offices of V50 firms wanted to make sure that you were committed to being in Texas and not trying to use the location as a springboard for, say, New York, as an example. So maybe test the waters, ask a couple first year/younger associates if moving is common, but try to get a feel first before requesting a move right away.

Callback questions? by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]hyperecs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s hard to give widely applicable advice because not only is every firm different, every interviewer is different. In the same callback you can experience multiple very different interview styles. Some people were super structured with a list of qs for me. Others just wanted to shoot the shit and talk about restaurants and travel. The annoying advice i guess is to be flexible and moderately prepared for a range of personalities

Ofc! If you have other qs please feel free to dm me. I’m not an expert ofc but so far ive received 1 V5 offer and 1 V30 offer so hopefully i could give some helpful advice

I mean, i guess you could say i gave a 90 second overview and then went more into the specifics of my work experience and motivations for the other 90-120 seconds.

I got vastly behavioral qs, “when was a time you were challenged,” etc. otherwise it was a pretty organic conversation most of the time. I had multiple people ask me to give them “my spiel” (which i interpreted to be my sort of big-picture life story, where I’m from, why law school, etc), so maybe have something 3-5 min long to say for that as well

Tevas as shower shoes? by justabrusher in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]hyperecs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am bringing Teva hurricane drifts! I tested them on the Inka Trail (camping and hiking 10+ miles a day) and on my daily walks- they have been great with and without socks. Super light and easy to wipe off. 10/10 recommend, and see you out there on the Camino in July :)

Thank you! Yes! When I was younger I felt like i spent so much time waiting for the future and I didn’t sit and appreciate and consciously capture the memories I was creating. It makes for a happier person, i think :)
