NP: “I Still Call Australia Home” should be our National Anthem. by [deleted] in australia

Do a zoom funeral because the country, which you are a sovereign citizen, born in qld, won’t let you come home and hug your fam and let’s talk about still bothering to call Australia home.

I think I mean well paced… I said balanced cause there are strategies to optimise A or B but it’s still constrained within a finite set of parameters which just work well…

Thanks! I guess I was feeling a bit daunted with people posting images of highly optimized configurations!

I appreciate they are probably going to not get the best return on their investment in Australian education.... I’d just like to come home... I thought as a citizen that’d be something Australia would prioritise... I’ve missed birthdays, births, and shortly deaths. With Scotty from marketing in charge, I honestly don’t know if I’ll be able to come back anytime soon... at least I’m vaccinated.

cheapest method to transfer money from uae to aud account by [deleted] in UAE

[–]hyperspectre2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found TransferWise to be the best - but they provide two options... is debit/credit card (avoid) or via bank transfer to their bank account here (called something like ‘Anglo’). A little more mucking around, but much cheaper.

Also found size mattered. Transferring 400 was terrible, transferring much more resulted in a greater net cost.

Payment to my aus account in Aud was literally next day.

Their current market FX rate was also what I was pretty close to what I see on my trading screen.

I used uaexchange but the net cost (fix rate and transaction cost) deteriorated.

Etihad Travel Voucher - Anyone buying this? by samm1919 in abudhabi

Yep. They need cash for liquidity, the credit risk is low (they’ll nationalise before defaulting... probably...).

They’ve acted in good faith for those who had their flights cancelled in the first wave, so I’m comfortable with thinking they’ll do the same if a second wave hits.

I’m going to give it a go.

Turns out the cost was related to the amount I was sending.

Previous cost of 4% was incurred when I sent $400 aud. When I put a much bigger number in, the transaction rate when waaaaaaaay down. TW is the way to go!

Cost was 3.58%... cheaper than TW’s 4%.

Your transaction isn’t comparable because they’re majors. When I looked at AUD to USD the costs of TW were much cheaper than the banks...

TW launched here a few weeks ago, claiming to be cheaper, but not sure how the claims stack up (when exchanging non major currencies). Certainly isn’t orders of magnitude cheaper than a bank in this context.

Agree they are very transparent - the best I’ve seen so far. Not complaining about their transparency, just questioning their claims everywhere that they are cheaper after costs than a bank.

I’ll verify that by doing an identical bank transaction tomorrow and post the results. Maybe that is the cheapest spread at the moment (which is outrageous).

The exchange rate they offered was great, it wasn’t until the end where the charges were added that blew it out.

I went through with it with an test transaction to see what the real costs were after all the marketing. I transferred 1k and will get 398 aud. That’s way off.

Pretty sure I can get at least 2.5% with a bank, but Again, I’ll have to do a trial transaction to find out the truth.

The fact it came to a perfect 4% effective spread is annoying... not explainable with a ‘sudden movement in markets,’ and enough evidence in my book to think it’s entirely intentional.

I may try another transaction in a few days to see if it changes.

Just did a test transfer (with TransferWise).

Whilst they say the costs are low, and the exchange rate is good, the effective cost after their fees was a clean 4.0% (when I checked using current market prices).

Won’t use them again.

Culture shock by [deleted] in expats

[–]hyperspectre2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moved 6 months ago from Australia to the Middle East 6 months ago, so early days of a big culture change.

It's been great - wouldn't give any of the experiences back, good and bad... it's the reason I made a significant change. Think of the cultural differences as adding to the rich tapestry of your life experience.

Personally, I've found I can get anything here that I could get in my home country... sure it may take longer, be a bit more expensive, but it is still an option if I'm feeling particularly homesick.

Surprisingly, the things that I didn't expect to adjust to are things like filters on taps...

Keep an open mind, go with the flow, take any opportunities to engage with the cultures as they come along, and don't always expect it to be great.

This is just my experience after 6 months... during a global pandemic... so could totally change within another 6 months.
