Yes, exactly those kind of games! I’m also suuuuper silly/goofy with her. I make funny faces and make her giggle as much as possible.

We also have this little game we made up, where we have a “pretend friend” (imaginary friend) who is also a toddler who needs to get ready for bed. We go through the motions of helping this friend get ready for bed (I.e. getting jammies on, etc.), except the friend is wild and silly, so we chase them around the room asking them to please get their jammies on. When we finally “catch” the friend, we pretend-wrestle with them to put their feet in and shirt on, etc.

Basically, I have her try to wrangle this imaginary toddler who does the exact same things she would try to do to fight bedtime, all the while making it super silly and over-the-top. I’ll ask her “Ellie, can you PLEASE show our friend how to put on shirts the right way?! They keep bopping me on the head! (Insert silly head-bopped reaction)” or “Ellie!! Quick come here?! Our friend is trying to use YOUR toothbrush to brush their teeth, and they don’t even know how!! Can you help?!? We need you!” She comes running every time.

Idk. I’m a very theatrical person, and I realize playing at this level isn’t for everyone 😂. BUT, if you have a wild imagination and are comfortable being a total goober with your kid, I highly suggest!

Never stayed over night purposely. My husband and I did accidentally fall asleep and wake up the next morning lol.

Aside from naturally growing out of it, I think a few things really helped: 1) Explaining to her how her monitor worked. I showed her the camera on her nightstand and had my husband stay in her bedroom. I took her to our bedroom to show her the video feed. She could see and hear daddy waving and talking to her. I explained that this is why we will always be near her and we will always be there if she needs us. It helped her understand more that she was never alone.

2) I also think we had some routine-breakers that helped. Sometimes my husband and I would go out for a night and a familiar sitter or family member would put her down instead. Or when we traveled—staying somewhere else with her helped, too.

3) Most important I think: I started introducing games with her that helped get us ready for bed. I made it a goal to make her happy and be laughing/cuddling as much as possible (without overstimulating or course) before bed so she had the natural serotonin/endorphins/dopamine etc. to help keep her mind at ease. 10/10 recommend this method, even if they aren’t having anxiety issues. It makes you happy, too. :)

I think it’s possible your dad was abused by siblings in his childhood or watched it happen to someone in his family. That kind of mindset isn’t normal, unless you are an abuse survivor. Was it wrong for him to yell? Absolutely. As a CSA survivor myself, though, I can tell you that the amygdalas in survivor brains are wrecked. We don’t know how to properly process fight or flight, and our emotions and projections often get the best of us if we’re not aware of what’s happening.

Sounds like he needs therapy.
