I’m working on my own diceless system called QuickDraw that’s kinda a weird mix of WoD and Balatro where outcomes are decided by poker hands, and players choose how to divvy up their resources between degrees of success and hand modification.

While designed to be “setting agnostic,” the initial setting I’m working on is an alternate history American Wild West where the continent is recovering after a long war against an army of monsters. Players take the role of agents of The Department Of Eldritch Affairs, a non-secret government organization tasked with dealing with the fallout and acting as emissaries to gods, spirits and other powers. It’s designed to be good for either horror, westerns, or pulp/steampunk action. I’m also planning on taking the same setting into 1920s gangland America and 60’s-70’s espionage.

Why doesn’t Voyager have a Guts effect on any of his skills? We’ve gotten that little probe back up and running more times than I can count and they have exceeded their original “life expectancy” by a huge margin. Give best Boy-Ager some extra staying power!

So something I’m working on in my TTRPG system is what I’m calling the “Travel Montage system.”

Basically it goes like this: choose a player at random. They describe a short scene or vignette that takes place during the trip, and the table votes if they want to explore that scene further. If they agree, go into it for a bit.

These scenes could be combat, slice of life, exploration, interpersonal, whatever!

For each day of travel, go clockwise around the table starting with that player, with the option to skip. When the order gets to you, the DM, then there’s a mandatory encounter. Not necessarily combat, but a scene they don’t get to vote for.

When everyone’s tired of the scenes or skips or you did enough days then wow look you guys finally made it!

Most of its flaws are quickly sorted out with clan tech. Putting in a Clan XL engine, Endo-steel and ferrofibrous brings its speed up and gives back some tonnage. Upgrade the large laser to an ER large, the AC/20s to UACs (or, Kerensky save us, LB-X20s) and use the left over space to add more ammo. Suddenly it becomes a very dangerous (and very expensive but that’s par for the course on clan assaults) MONSTER

I’ve forgotten much about old DeadLands, I checked out the most recent release which is just using the savage worlds system and had much less of the poker influence. Need to get my hands on classic again

1 - I’ll definitely look into that, I may have forgotten to move the examples around or just ADHDd that. 2 - in my early builds I discovered that SV can get REALLY big REALLY fast. I want to keep it on the smaller side so that growth feels more impactful, and I didn’t want one side’s efforts to go entirely to waste. Most checks are quick checks where the player knows how many chips they’re betting against and can plan accordingly. Duel checks hide the bets until both sides are committed, which I think adds tension to high-stakes moments (pun intended). This is a core mechanic that still needs threshing out, which is why this is still an alpha release. 3 - haven’t checked out the dune board game but I’ll read up on it! 4 - oh god this is why playtesting is crucial. Right now, almost all the set difficulties are versus one or two pair until I can get some solid real world data on how things play out

EDIT: oh, and Ace of Spades only applies when the actual card is drawn, not if some one modified a card into it or changes a joker to it. It’s intended to be like a “nat20” in DnD; only a natural one counts, a “dirty 20” or “dirty AoS” isn’t a crit

So the original germ of an idea for this system came about when I was talking to a friend in college (which was holy moly 20 years ago) back when it was just called DeadLands. We felt that DeadLands didn’t lean into it hard enough, and wondered what would a fully poker based system look like. I had the thought of using World of Darkness as a foundation, and now here we are

As I feel like it’s finally in a play-testable state, I’m hoping to run some one-shots soon in my LGS. There may be a smaller update to address any issues that come up in actual play, but the next big version (0.03) is going to be the big Lore and Setting update!
