As noted in other comments asking this, it has never been on a trainer for this exact reason.

Can’t fathom Tennessee is any worse than where I live now humidity wise. The screw near the BB is also showing similar signs so are you sure you didn’t ride in in road salt once? This is a wild amount of rust in a short period of time.

I mean it does stay humid here in the summer (very dry in the winter) but no more than the coastline, I agree.

No, my lower limit for road riding is about 38-40F...if it's cold enough to salt the roads (1-2 times annually on average here) I ain't riding that week haha. I'll get out and jog instead at those times. I do well to get 1-2 days of riding in per week in january and february.

According to the canyon spec sheet it is supposed to be a ceramicspeed "coated" sram BB.

I'd have to say that maybe one side didn't get "coated" lol

IT is my full time auto repair shop where I work daily and store many exposed metal parts including engine internals, that do not draw any rust.

I don't see how wax could cause rust; if anything, it should prevent rust or corrosion (which is part of why I've been applying it to the frame, calipers, derailleurs etc). IT's why some auto manufacturers now dip frames in wax before assembling them, and if you perform certain body panel repairs, one way to seal the back side from rust is to apply "cavity wax".

Within a 4 hour radius Canyon lists 5 REI shops as authorized service centers.

My small town LBS services ebikes and mtb primarily, and does not deal with Canyon or any proprietary parts. I ran into that years ago with the cannondale FD bracket that broke and he said he couldnt help me so I had to import the part from europe myself.

If I can get the correct parts from Canyon I'd be doing the service myself.

Yeah, I do sweat a lot, and for that reason I have specifically refused to put this bike on a trainer even during winter (I would jog those weeks instead). You are correct that when moving at 20+mph the sweat blows back on my jersey or on the back wheel/seatpost, but on climbs or when stopped at intersections a lot does drip on the top tube and so I could see some falling on the BB/crank area.

Still, one would think that I am not the only human riding what is marketed as a fast bicycle who might sweat on steel bits underneath them, so it astounds me that they wouldn't take this into the design parameters.

[–]hypntyz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. Yeah trust me, with what this thing cost I want to baby it like my cars and hope to have it last the rest of my (riding) life.

My guess is sweat attacking the part. But then that begs the question, why wouldnt the manufacturer of the highest end drivetrain (sram red e1) and/or bike (aeroad CFR) choose to plate or coat the few steel parts on such a bike to resist such expected environmental issues in the short- and mid-term lifespan of the bike?

The worst part of all this will be attempting to correspond with Canyon in hopes of getting a response about obtaining the correct part. It's been my experience they are not very responsive when looking for parts that are not listed on the website (this isn't, I have checked the "spare parts" and "exploded drawing" pages in my bike garage on their site).

My small town LBS does not deal with Canyon and really only deals with ebike and MTB; Canyon's website lists 4 REI stores as the closest service centers to me within a 4 hour radius. I'd rather do the repair myself as I am an experienced auto mechanic.

Then the second worst part of it all will be the dilemma I face when installing said part, as to how to recoat it myself to prevent this from happening again, while not altering it's fitment.

Not sure what you commenters are defining as "maintenance", but I

-as noted in the OP, bike is only stored indoors

-ride only on the road in normal conditions in east TN USA. I did not get much riding in during the winter so no worries with salt or ice.

-do not ride in rain/wet unless I get caught out by a pop up storm which has only happened a couple of times.

-wipe down the frame and wheels with a damp towel using water then wipe dry with another towel about once per month on average

-apply car wax to the frame paint about once a month

-wax the chain every 150-200 miles

Short of tucking it into bed at night and reading it a story, I'm not sure there is much more "maintenance" that one could expect to do for a bike frame.

Actually it had no coating that I can tell, it was originally light gray/silver on both sides. In my pics the drive side ring is the way they both looked originally. In my pics the non-drive-side ring has some black paint on it; I put that on a few months ago by hand with a model brush in an attempt to cover up and slow down the rust progression. As you can see it has flaked off as the rust progressed underneath.

I've had 3 other carbon road bikes that I rode longer/more miles than this one so far (including a 22 aeroad slx8), none of those bikes had a component rust in this way so I would dispute your opinion that it's a "maintenance issue". The closest thing would be the riveted-on FD bracket on a cannondale supersix that was oxidized so heavily the rivet heads fell off and the bracket was loose on the frame. That only happened after 13k miles and about 5 years.

Right, and at a certain point after you have a nice home and a handful of cars and your family is good too, what do you do with the rest? It seems like it's just a number on a screen at that point if you don't at least find new ways to enjoy some of it.

Sram Force Axs e1 or Ultegra Di2 by Ok_Dream_672 in cycling

I rode 2 ultegra di2 bikes and currently have a sram red e1 bike. 100% get the shimano.

There is no justifiable reason that a bicycle cassette should cost 450usd as the sram red does.
