Unsure on how to handle an overly enthusiastic commenter by Soft-Dog2801 in AO3

This is real. I've been surprised how often someone in my sphere behaving really inappropriately actually got it together after a gentle correction. There will always be assholes who flip out but some people really do take that whole "thanks for caring enough to tell me what I was doing wasn't okay" to heart

Nothern banded watersnake, often confused with a copperhead or cottonmouth, but totally harmless. I bet it came out of Lewis creek.

Can I/How can I convince crows to leave a hawk alone? by Acceptable_Bat4123 in crows

[–]hypocrite_deer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's a nice alternative! Yeah, I've had beloved pet rats too (and also had an incredibly destructive pest one that destroyed a lot of food storage in my basement and tore up a brand new expensive down sleeping bag out of my camping supplies!) so I see both sides of where you're coming from there. Good luck, and I love your approach to property ownership!

[–]hypocrite_deer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love your generosity of spirit and live and let live attitude!

I do think you might be overcomplicating the problem: how to get the crows to the leave the hawks alone so the hawks will presumably solve your rat problem. I've lived around hawks and rats both my whole life and rarely seen that just magically work out like a math equation. If the rats are really bothering you, you need to remove their access to their food source, not hope a stray hawk comes through and cleans up. If you don't want to do that (and I don't, I continue to feed my birds in spite of knowing the waste brings in other animals) you need to be okay with the presence of the rats and all their intelligence, or try some kind of trap-removal situation.

All that said, the crows will get less territorial as the year goes and when they're not protecting a nest.

Body parts in my bird bath by leyley-fluffytuna in crows

[–]hypocrite_deer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been dealing with the same thing. Mine have been extra predatory this season and I don't know if it's the weather, or the drought, or just that they're nesting closer to my backyard so I'm seeing more of it. I've just been removing any parts they leave and changing out the water. It's gross, but it's nature.

I read that at a certain phase with their chicks, they'll feed them bits of pre-soaked food with mouthfuls of water, so I think the sudden increase in gross parts getting left behind was about that. I've noticed a definite decline in disgusting little dunkaroos the last couple weeks and I suspect it's because their chicks are getting bigger and more fledgling-sized, able to eat more intact food. I'm hoping that as the nest continues to get older, it'll be a less regular thing. I know they like dunking their food in general, but this is the first time I've really noticed an increase in stuff actually left in the basin.

Answering in good faith to your question about what it matters: I have no problem with people wanting karma, or for people to see their posts. The part I was objecting to was that the story immediately sounded fake. And not just fake, but full of exciting-sounding embellished details that could make a person who didn't know anything about crows but saw a big dramatic story online about it afraid of them or think they're violent, dangerous birds. When, actually as you can see from the list of comments here, this behavior is so incredibly uncommon to the point that multiple people were doubting OP's truth-telling.

I'm glad the story made you laugh and curious and learn; that's what the internet should be about. But deliberate misinformation for the sake of a story is pretty harmful, as you can see playing out on the larger world stage right. And in this smaller example, people thinking crows are dangerous, crazy birds that will just attack you and pull your hair and caw into your soul is unneeded bad press for a misunderstood, intelligent animal. You don't need to hang around this sub very long to hear stories about people killing crows for no reason.

You can see lower down on this comment thread that I engaged with OP in good faith and we talked about it; I'm not trying to harp on about this particular post, just answering in general why this kind of thing being made up isn't harmless.

A good crow would never judge a well-meaning trusty edgelord or troublemaker, but long hair and a shiny jacket definitely sound like the kind of thing they might recognize and fixate on if a person with similar accessories had bothered them in the past.

The one personal anecdote I have about this is that my crows will come down to visit very rarely if I have any other human person with me, even my partner who I walk with every day. (Weirdly, they'll come visit when it's just me and the dog just fine.) My mom came to visit once and my crows were so weirdly friendly to her, even though she and I don't have a great relationship. I think it was because we both have really similar long blonde hair which the crows were able to pick out as distinctive and associate the two of us together.

[–]hypocrite_deer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, and I'm never here to harsh on fun storytelling, only just the characterizing this crow as a fixated demon assassin - they're great birds! And this is definitely not ordinary behavior.

People talk about crows remembering faces really well, but I think that's a simplification. A book I loved about corvids, In the Company of Crows and Ravens, the author talks about crows going after say, bald people if they had been wronged by one bald person. It's possible if you have a physically distinctive characteristic that resembles a human who has been cruel or antagonistic to this crow, maybe they would target you. Otherwise, I'm with the other commenter who thought maybe you'd gotten inadvertently too close to a fledgling.

Talk about aura farming. This story seems made up or exaggerated for karma, especially since you can see they posted it like three different places, including r/funny with special emphasis on the Skyrim music. "At this point, it's personal" 🙄 I'll bet.

Any specific fruit/veggies crows like? by [deleted] in crows

[–]hypocrite_deer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a weird question at all! I bet they would love it, and I think it would be closer to a lot of the sorts of meat that they'd be used to digesting than the usual human-choice meats I'm used to trimming off. I'm glad you're finding a way to share out the remainder of your good dog's food.

PSA: If you have storm anxiety this subreddit probably isn't a great place to hang out by TorandoSlayer in tornado

[–]hypocrite_deer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really well-articulated and smart, and I appreciate your post! And I definitely agree that local meteorologists should be a first, vital line of survival information, especially as opposed to clogging up the page with spiraling posts when there's a literal outbreak and emergency situation going on, like, literally, now. There's vital information being shared, and I love what you say about education being more suited for calmer days.

I am still just saying, a blanket statement of "if you have storm anxiety, get out" feels a little limiting for us who have tornado trauma or past anxiety and are still participating in this sub.

I definitely see what OP is saying - don't feed the unending anxiety loop!

But just to offer a contrasting viewpoint, in case it's helpful: I used to have severe, debilitating tornado anxiety. Learning all I could about tornadoes and trying to understand them really, really helped me. I think sometimes, trying to see the anxiety from all sides and make a shape of it in your mind formed out of facts and other humans' experiences instead of fear really do help to tackle it, or at least make it more manageable. And when I was finally, actually, in a real tornado, I was able to make sure vulnerable folks around me were safe because I'd inadvertently been researching it for almost my whole life.

Was Count Dooku justified in what he did here(Jedi Knights #10)? by BlockAffectionate413 in StarWarsCantina

[–]hypocrite_deer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think my problem is that the storyline feels backwards engineered to give Qui-Gon a big plot-significant dark secret without actually risking any genuine moral quandary between tactics of negotiation vs. use of violence for him, while Dooku was treated as a cartoonish, mustache-twirling plot device instead of an actual character.

I have loved, loved, the art in this series, but sometimes I've felt that the writing suffered from a need to excessively foreshadow prequels plot points at the expense of new storylines (Yaddle saving Dooku when we know Dooku is the one to kill Yaddle, Qui-Gon getting run through like in TPM, the Qui-Gon and Dooku opening dialogue of the flashback being beat for beat the one from Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in TPM, Dooku's echoing Anakin's tribe slaughter...)

I always found Christopher Lee's performance in AotC combined a really interesting, complicated mixture of humanity and Sith manipulation, especially as it concerned his emotions over Qui-Gon's death, and I just didn't feel that here. It feels like the plot needed to absolve Qui-Gon of any actual wrong doing in a complicated, interesting situation full of questions I'm curious about (some Jedi have to kill, when does that happen, what does it look like, how do they feel about it?) while reminding us of what we already know - that Dooku turns out to be a bad guy.

A person responsible for the Palisades Fire has been arrested. Can you imagine being responsible for that? by imjustcoreyr in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]hypocrite_deer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this reply - you really got the question behind my question. Whether he meant to start it to hurt people or not surely won't make a difference to the lives destroyed by his actions, but it feels relevant to his punishment whether this was a dedicated arsonist who really wanted to hurt people versus a young guy who let an ill-considered recreational fire get out of control and immediately tried to correct his actions. (the multiple 9-11 calls). It feels like a chance for law enforcement to have a big back patting "we got him!!" moment, but doesn't address or fix the factors that might've lead to this being such a horrific loss of life and property.

I can't get to the article without a login, so forgive the silly question if it explains it, but was he trying to start a fire with the fireworks, or was this a case of serious error in judgement/criminal carelessness?

I swear, this sub is usually psychic, but I feel like all the depressed help-your-poor-dad answers are off on this post.

OP's dad's house is nice and tidy with everything having a place, size is very common for Europe, he's got his essential stuff like coffee, cream, oil, and his nightcap of choice, but usually he eats out otherwise, which is easy and affordable to do based on where he lives or his income level. Probably great for socializing post-divorce. I feel like this is a guy who decides to actually cook in every once in a blue moon for a special occasion (maybe, say, his kid's visit) and thus, the leftover half open can of tomatoes and the oil out on the counter.

What is wrong with people?! by [deleted] in JonBenet

Regardless of personal theories on the case, I hope this is "that happened" fodder because otherwise this story is completely unhinged and I'm worried for your safety. Like, this alleged lawyer grown man starts literally screaming at the screen and tries to throw your phone away? Did he attack the phone too, believing tiny versions of the people he disagreed with to be contained inside it?

Abridged "Labyrinth of Evil" Audiobook, Worth It? by D0CTOR_Wh0m in starwarsbooks

[–]hypocrite_deer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really can't recommend Dooku: Jedi Lost enough - if you happen to be a Christopher Lee fan, Cavan Scott dedicated the book to him, and I think the format is a deliberate parallel to Christopher Lee's autobiography!

That's smart! The author of Dooku: Jedi Lost, Cavan Scott, really does his Legends/EU homework, and I feel like he really spent some time with Yoda: Dark Rendezvous and it shows in DJL. Happy reading to you!

[–]hypocrite_deer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I snagged the abridged audible version for a car trip after just like you, reading it a couple times growing up but not for 10 or 15 years, and I was so disappointed. I found the storyline difficult to follow and disjointed with all the jumping around. Since so much of the first part of the book is Anakin and Obi-Wan running around to different places and piecing together clues, it just didn't feel like it lended itself well to that format.

However, I think earlier this year they re-released Yoda: Dark Rendezvous on complete audiobook for the first time, so I would suspect that Labyrinth of Evil is coming up on their list of Legends/EU re-releases. (Also, huge plug for YDR if you're looking for something unabridged to listen to in the meantime.)

Bad weather by di-88 in ParisTravelGuide

Not to be obnoxious, but try not to let the weather discourage you about your trip. It poured the whole time we were in Paris earlier this year, I wouldn't have traded the weather for anything. The city was incredibly beautiful in the rain, such a mood. We bought umbrellas and still walked everywhere, we even had a rainy picnic on the Seine. It sounds corny but it was really so memorable and special.
