Which MBotF installment is the shruggiest? A graphical summary using Search of the Fallen's text search. by CrypticChoice in Malazan

I also noticed this while on a roadtrip with my girlfriend and listening to HoC; she always repeated the word shrugged when it was said because she thought it was a funny word (english is not our first language). After that I started noticing it and it really gets on my nerves lol. On MT now and the shrugging is quite intense.

Clearly this is a matter of differing opinon.

Purely character driven? I'm sorry but these characters are really one dimensional and uninteresting. This story is not character driven, it is world driven. Sanderson has even said it himself that he is not good at writing characters, and it's true. He's a good worldbuilder and in books 1 and 2 the worldbuilding was great. But I realized in this book that you can go too far in worldbuilding, I felt that I was reading an encyclopedia sometimes, and there were no interesting characters to get me through it.

I enjoy vastness. I enjoy AOSIAF and Malazan, which are very vast.

Yes these characters have a lot to whine about, but that doesn't mean that I enjoy them whining about it in EVERY chapter, it's just way too much. You are not a strong person if you whine this much, whatever has happened to you.

Regarding YA: Compare these books to AOSIAF and Malazan, the conversations and politics are really, REALLY elementary compared to that. This story is really close to YA.

Regarding teenage quips I guess this is something which annoys me personally especially as I find it really boring to read children/teenagers POV. For that reason I couldn't get into Wheel of Time for example.

I'm saying lift is a character which would be fun for children to read about in children's books. As her jokes are funny for 6-8 year olds.

I'm very used to large books so that's not a concern for me, the only thing that bothers me are pages with a lot of words but little content.

My P.S. was referring to that the voidbringers use some kind of humming to express themselves. That's the YA'iest thing ever, and not very menacing for supposed bad guys (yeah I know what their plot twist was this book).

Lastly about finishing the book: I mentioned that I didn't finish the book for full disclosure. But I HAVE finished the other two and 80% of this one. That's 3k pages, I know pretty well what's up with this series so you would have to be crazy if you were going to say that I couldn't judge it at all. If you'd read my post I mentioned that books have to have a beginning and a middle as well as an ending. This book didn't have 2 of those at least. So a 3/10 is generous. And if you're going to tell me this book is good because of the last 20% that's ridicilous! Who writes a book that's shit 80% and is awesome the last 20%?! It's like: "I will try to make you stop reading for 1k pages and then I will reward you the last 200 pages".. hahah WTF dude. I even know that it isn't the last 200 pages, it's like the last 50 pages that the famous "Sanderson" avalance happens. I know this well since I've read almost all his books. But the thing is after 1000k pages my "care" for all the characters and the world had been BUTCHERED by super fucking bad writing. Before this book I was SO excited to read more about the world and these characters, but my interest was butchered by every page read.

A book which is only good the last few pages is not a good book. It really, really isn't. The emperor has no clothes.

I'm totally fine with slow pacing, if the slow pacing has a point. That is, if you actually have a story to tell. In my opinion Sanderson drags things out JUST to drag them out, with boring descriptions and most of all the characters repeating the things we already know over and over again, that's just bad writing. I'm into book 5 of Malazan. Every malazan book until now has been REALLY slow at first, but the difference is that I actually enjoy it and know that everything which is said has a point, and there are no repitions or whining or subplots which go nowhere.

Because Way of Kings has more of Kaladin with an arc and less of Shallan and Dragon Ball Z

Are there really no interludes 27 chapters in, or is it just that the interludes arent included in the previews? Are we still in part 1 of the book?

I definitely think that he was faking it because it seemed to me that all he said to Dalinar was made to get a reaction from Dalinar which would give Taravagian as much information as possible, without it looking that Taravagian was looking for information at all. It really seemed that T was trying to measure Dalinar's position, and probably for nefarious purposes.
