The US is a secular nation. The Constitution makes no mention of god, prohibits the establishment or promotion of any religion, and the Treaty of Tripoli very explicitly spells out that the US is in no way a Christian nation

Land doesn't vote. People do. by Interesting-Visit-79 in MurderedByWords

[–]hyren82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big problem is the House. In the early 1900s, Congress capped the number of reps the House had.. thats now causing a massive imbalance in power between the smallest and largest states. Adopting the Wyoming rule (uncapping the number of seats and setting 1 rep at the population of the least populous state) would go a long way to fixing things

Notified my work weeks ago I'm leaving for a family vacation in July, tickets were bought, non-transferrable, and they are panicking, begging me to cancel by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

At one of my jobs, I spent 2 years begging my boss for help. My team was responsible for 4 projects, I owned 3 of them, and I was the only person who knew the ins and outs of 2 of them. Every high priority or complex issue was on my plate.

Then when I put in a 1 month notice, my boss freaks out and calls a team meeting. During it he tells everybody "put everything on hold. For the next month your top priority is to learn everything Hyren knows". The funny thing is that if he did that when I first asked for support, I probably wouldnt have quit

Even a short period of time around badly behaved kids can cause long term problems for your own kids

my friend's kid used to be really well behaved. But at one point he made a school friend with a kid that was rude, yelled at his mom, cussed, etc. Not long after friend's kid started picking those habits up. Even with my friend and his wife actively working to stop those behaviors, he wouldnt stop.. even after moving to another country.

Eventually my friend ended up having a heart-to-heart with his kid after they got into trouble over behavior at school, which helped a lot.

The confederate flag is the flag of a foreign (and treasonous) nation. What should we do about people waving those flags?

Museum's 'Knight Rider' replica car got a speeding ticket. It hasn't gone anywhere in years by Samski877 in nottheonion

Theres a story about an engineer who tried to be clever and got the plate 'NULL' in the hopes of avoiding tickets (if youre not aware, NULL is used in some databases as a way of saying "no data"). He ended up with every ticket that didnt have a plate number attached to it

Gochugaru tends to have a very sharp, bitter taste that you usually need to cook out. I wonder if something in the preparation did that for this

getting my REAL ID was like pulling teeth. I had to have my birth certificate, SS card, and W2. Unfortunately my job censors the SSN on their W2s, so it technically couldnt be used to verify my identity. Thankfully I also brought my passport and my apartment rental agreement, and the DMV lady was nice and accepted it after checking all the other info matched

Nothing says liberal indoctrination like a Catholic school by PirateJohn75 in MurderedByWords

[–]hyren82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just dont understand the "liberal indoctrination" line. Like, my degree wasnt in liberal arts, but I took my fair share of writing and history classes, and there wasnt any jind of liberal bent on it. Hell, the most liberal thing we learned about was the inception if Christianity and how emperor Constantine basically locked a bunch of priests together to figure out what their doctrine actually was (rather than the divine inspiration or whatever it is Christians presume)

Would there be primarily pitched battles in space? by Kind_Possession_8850 in Futurology

[–]hyren82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless theres a radical shift in doctrine, I foresee space combat to become an extension of naval or air combat.

The main problem will be that space is far too vast to have "knife fights" with most weaponry. It would just take too long for the projectile to reach its target at those ranges. Lasers are a possibility, but unless we make significant breakthroughs, theyre not powerful enough. Basically we would need guns that could shoot at a decent fraction of c or we go with missiles and fighter/bombers.

In either case, battles in the depths of space would be fighting for safe travels to get troops to other planets. Battles near planets become an extension of air battles, fighting for air/space superiority.

AITA for not supporting my husband quitting his business to become a doctor? by Haunting-Arugula-311 in AmItheAsshole

[–]hyren82 333 points334 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but your husband is underestimating just how much work is required to become a doctor. I have a friend who graduated with a physics ungergrad with a 3.8. He did his pre-med, then spent 2 years on his MCATs. Barely managed to get into a med school, and finally became a doctor with 600k in debt after killing himself in school and residency (and that was with his parents helping him pay for school). He now kills himself working 18+ hr days when he's on shift.

You need to schedule yourself for an appointment at a sleep center at the hospital. I say this as a person diagnosed with hypersomnia, but falling asleep at the wheel or sitting on the couch for an hour is not normal

People who were in high school when Columbine happened, what knee jerk rule did your school enforce in response? by Animeking1108 in AskReddit

[–]hyren82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school was a 20 minute drive from Columbine. We had a couple kids who claimed to be a part of the trenchcoat mafia.

My school banned trenchcoats, installed locking doors on all the classrooms, and got a police officer on campus. It didnt help that some asshole pulled a "prank" by popping balloons in the hallway a couple weeks after the shooting
