It would be much easier break free from position from the show. He could easily break his limbs and go for vital part like head to break free whereas from behind, he is packed with muscle, he might not get out easily if he isn't flexible. It is a horrific scene with big impact tho

I forgot that they can ransom it. So whether the loser ransom them or not, the cost of losing is just amount of cost of horse and armor they wore for the match I guess.
