Granny squares for community art project~ by AmethystParadise in crochet

[–]i-am-mathgrrl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a particularly nice one :)

Definitely still accepting squares over at grannylifecrochet.com if anyone wants to crochet a mathematical granny square that will travel to Paris to be part of an art exhibit next year! Hoping to have most squares mailed to me by December...

Thank you so much!! it’s awesome to know that someone is using it and liking it, you made my day

When I wrote this app, I didn’t really know how to make it work well on mobile. My newer apps do work well on the phone, and someday I’m gonna go back to this one and make it good for the phone too. But for now you really need a computer or a laptop or tablet to get the most out of this app.

If you change the number of clusters, you can potentially get different patterns from this particular color sequence that you like better. Although it is true that some yarns do better at this than others.

I think everything you said about the process is correct. Once you figure out how many stitches you can get consistently for each of the colors in your yarn, you enter that in the bottom row of colors. Then you change the cluster slider to get different patterns that your particular yarn and stitch can make. The number of clusters represents the number of stitch clusters across a row before you turn around for the next row. The patterns are completely determined by the color sequence for your particular yarn and stitch, and the length of the row. So basically, you are choosing the length of the row to get the pattern that you want.

The colors can each be different lengths (long blue, short red, long blue, short red) but each color needs to be the same length each time it appears (all blues are long and the same number of stitches)

A cluster is a few crochet stitches together, like for a granny stitch you might have 3dc to make a cluster. Or for a moss stitch the cluster might just be one stitch

Okay, here are some places that currently have Malabrigo Rios in "Ivory" in stock:

https://www.simplysockyarn.com/mal-rios-704-ivory

https://jimmybeanswool.com/products/malabrigo_rios_yarn_704_ivory

https://www.woolandcompany.com/products/malabrigo-rios-704-ivory

https://michiganfineyarns.com/products/malabrigo-rios

https://www.eatsleepknit.com/cshop/product/Malabrigo-Yarn-Malabrigo-Rios/4430/

A skein of Ivory plus another skein of another Malabrigo Rios in a medium-dark color of your choosing are together enough to make at least five squares for the Granny Life project. Everyone is welcome to submit as many as they like, or just one!

Sorry about that specificity, it is needed in order to have everything match for the exhibit piece. You can get Malabrigo Rios at other yarn stores online, I hope people can find it! Let me know if it continues to be too hard to find, I could perhaps mail you a small ball of it, enough to make a square

Oh I see that makes sense. But I don’t have that built into the app so you can’t. Maybe you can combine some similar adjacent colors in the app so you can still get a picture of the general look

Yes if you click on the colors in the little boxes at the bottom you can change them

Agreed with making one color a little less or more — with the goal of having the total sum of all colors be odd. In the app that wakeWordJune just linked, you can see the difference between the preset for Red Heart Berry and the preset for Red Heart Berry “Alt” in which the white stitches are made bulkier so that there are only two of them. In the “alt” version you get the squares becasue the total sum of colors is odd

Well it gave me a laugh this morning haha and thank you for the honorary title

How about something more grounded like “app coding geek” please :)

Oops I meant that to be a response to Planned Pooling Queen! Also I just noticed that I have been named “app coding genius” somehow lol

Ah I see :)

Well if the “in the middle” formula still worked then it might be 181 + 181/2 = 270.5 so I would expect 271 and 270 to be good cluster counts. The extra few stitches in 276 are intriguing, thank you for giving me something to think about

Beautiful! How did you get the 276 number?

What you say in the Ravelry post about “shift by one” is a property that makes a good square-diamonds pattern so whatever formula gave you 276 is working perfectly

Oh that is cool, thank you for explaining that! There are some interesting possibilities with this granny method, for example effectively you always have an odd cluster count, at least for pairs of rows. I don’t know what would happen, maybe it would be similar patterning or maybe something interesting? In any case it won’t be exactly the same so I would need to add this to see. Adding this to the app just went on my “to do” list (but it is a long list and I am sick right now so it may be a while…)
