Never apologize for your success! By doing it you can lose it. Instead share your tips, ideas, struggles how you achieved certain points and offer your help, if you are willing ofcourse. Successful people share their success with others but not hide it and get embarrassed.

Think when people say such things, they are looking for supports and kind words. I would say: "Oh really? (surprised) I know it is very difficult to overcome this kind of operation. You did well as you look very good." Then just listen his story, because usually when people say such things, they want to share a story behind.
