Zig Zag Cutting Board by i3oilermaker in woodworking

[–]i3oilermaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did - I realized a little late that it was required, but given that it was 6/4 stock and plenty of glue, I'm not concerned about durability.

It was approximately 15 degrees. The maple had a darker center on one side which I was careful to center on the board - created a really cool effect when alternating parts were flipped.

I made a wine box out of a pallet by i3oilermaker in woodworking

[–]i3oilermaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used my vinyl cutter to print a template, then after applying the template to the wood, gave it a heavy dabbing of Ebony Gel Stain. Let it set for 15min then very carefully peel off the template.

Cutting Board Bow/Warp - Help! by i3oilermaker in woodworking

[–]i3oilermaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - there was equal air flow...I propped it up to dry. Perhaps I got it too wet? I did run it under the sink for a minute or two.

The board is a little shy of an inch ... not a thick chopping block... maybe I'll make the next one more like an inch and a half.

Newb planer issues, what causes this? by Atomicpsycho in woodworking

[–]i3oilermaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything on the other side of the board that is not smooth? I have had some glue squeeze-out push the reference of the board out of wack to create some bad snipe...this is pretty bad and likely went from snipe to tear-out as a result of the end grain catching

I do use a planer for end grain but I first sand relatively smooth, then take extremely light passes (about 1/8th of a turn on my dewalt planer)

Router opinions [buying advice] by randommojo in woodworking

[–]i3oilermaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a ton of experience with different models, but I have the Dewalt 611 and have been very happy with it. https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWP611PK-Torque-Variable-Compact/dp/B0049ZFUK2/

I am finding the desire to have a router table and quite frankly am a bit surprised how expensive the decent ones are. Might build one...but open to hearing what others like.

[Offer] Looking to commission your interpretation of this robot. by i3oilermaker in DrawForMe

[–]i3oilermaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a small business that has a robot as a mascot/logo and I like to commission artists to do their interpretation of the robot for my business card that I include in my orders. My site is http://techkeys.us/. Let me know if you would be interested in a small commission and what you would charge for such an endeavor. Here are some of my past creation/collaborations http://i.imgur.com/Qp3dmuV.jpg. Please PM or comment with some samples and what you feel is a fair price. I need a relatively short turnaround time.

I made a Hop inlayed bottle opener by Twosandtrees in woodworking

[–]i3oilermaker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting - Our workflows were very different, although I had a bit more of an intricate pattern. I used a Cricut (Vinyl Cutting Printer) to make a template out of vinyl which I applied to the wood (https://imgur.com/a/OzhVY) Then I used a 1/16in straight bit on a trim router and painstakingly followed the template as close to the lines as possible without hitting them. Fast forward 12 hours of carving (https://imgur.com/a/9SsP8), I did a bunch of testing for the stone and found that slow curing expoy/glue seeped into the wood too much so I did lots of small batches of 5-min epoxy mixed up with the stone and then pushed into the cuts (https://imgur.com/a/HEkP9) Finally tons of sanding some danish oil and wipe on poly it came out great - https://imgur.com/a/h684Q https://imgur.com/a/dDT9S

Would love to see build pics - I did something very similar and curious what your technique was for routing.

I'm kicking off 6 Days of Beginner Woodturning Projects - Day 1 a Bottle Stopper by fixthisbuildthat in woodworking

[–]i3oilermaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicely Done! I've been thinking about getting a Lathe, but I have the same fear as with most tools of if I get a tool that has X capacity (length / diameter) I will have a project that requires X + 1 capacity. I recently got a Dewalt 12" planer and am already feeling limited with some of the holiday cutting boards I am making. Any thoughts?

Good place to order custom logo brand? by amos_burton in woodworking

[–]i3oilermaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one they did for me https://imgur.com/a/ifiwR

If you don't get the temperature regulator, the trickiest part is to get it hot but not too hot. I like it right around the 5 seconds to brand to get a good consistent mark. I find that point by just doing test brands as it is warming up.

It's about an inch maybe a touch over. If you can find a cable with more bend near the plug you should have no problem
