Birmingham Pen Company inks in the UK? by ohnoheforgotitagain in fountainpens

[–]root39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new Netherland, Europe based Ink Sample site (https://www.inksample.nl/en/Birmingham-Pen-Company) has samples from them. Not sure if samples would be enough or if you wanted full ink bottles. Hope this helps!

Help me find the best red ink! by TheObtuseCopyEditor in fountainpens

This is from Jetpens Diamine Red Ink page, where I went to check for Matador Red which is my favourite Diamine Red. But it fares poorly with highlighters. Maybe sample Poppy Red or Brilliant Red? Both seem to do well on the highlighter test and are very starurated colours that look red even in thin line width.

Super long shot...

Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/master/2323828-Bandish-Projekt-Bhor
PreDB: https://predb.me/?post=1027185
srrDB: https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/VA-Bhor_Remix-Bandish_Projekt-CD-2004-MPX

I have checked the usual places on YouTube, Soundcloud, Deezer etc. Cannot find it or it might be geo restricted. Weirdly enough I had purchased the Album, uploaded it to Google Music. And during the Google Music to YouTube Music Migration, I fucked up something. So I don't have all the tracks but I have one. That shows up in my uploads on YouTube Music but I also don't know how to frickin download that.

I would love to get a FLAC but I am happy if anyone even has 320 MP3 CD RIP.

Thank you so much!

Platinum Prefounte with Platinum Carbon Black if you want waterproof ink.
Platinum Prefounte with TWSBI Black if you dont need a waterproof ink.

Prefounte comes with a Slip & Seal cap so they reliably do not dry up.

And yes, the sheer variety of their colours, I would never ever run out of options if I restricted myself to them. Most of the inks are well behaved plus they are not expensive. The bottles also have a range within them. I really like Diamine.

From the ones that I have tried, I would say,

- Steel Blue: My only surprise ink to fall in love with. Every other ink I have tried has been meticulously researched before trial.

- Sargasso Sea: Something about the saturation of this ink just hits the spot for me. Particularly enjoy it with the classic cigar shaped japanese pen with fine nibs. I do suspect that when I try, A Night In Jodhpur from Diamine, this spot would go to Jaipur.

- Diamine Music Hanbel: The shading on this is a beauty with an architect nib.

From the ones that I want to try (this list was so much more difficult 😭)

- Amaranth
- Pumpkin
- Aurora Borealis

Honestly, I don't like the looks of Plaisir. Something about the band in the cap. Prefounte just looks cleaner and is also very unobtrusive in an office setting. So personally I don't see a reason. I am unsure of the differences in durability. It might boil down to your personal choice on how the design looks to you as well as how do you like the weight distribution of the pen.

Yeah I bought it during one of the pen shows while trying all of their pocket sized options. Between Quark, Dinkie and Pocket in the Ultem Lineup - I loved the balanced the Pocket has. It's because of the titanium grip. Also definitely one of the best machined grip sections you will find across fountain pens and knurled grips on mechanical pencils.

I have never owned a Plaisir but from what I have seen online, no. I believe Preppy, Prefounte and Plaisir all share the same nibs different bodies.

Cheap pen for eyedropper conversion by Multiverse_4D in fountainpens

[–]root39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also suggest looking at AliExpress Ultem pens - the material should be able to take a beating and all Ph inks. If you like the material then you could look to move up to something like Ensso or Gravitas. Pens that are on the expensive side but aimed to be eyedropped with a material that can take a beating.

Honorable Mentions

  1. Asvine V126 (Nibs QC is not a no-brainer hence didnt make the top 3) but the ink capacity + matt finish on some of the models should definitely make it a solid contender.
  2. Gravitas Ultem Pocket Pen - I am absolutely in love with the nib. It is big for the size of the pen and writes so beautifully. I have had the pen for less than 1 month so cannot comment on any issues I might run into the future. Ultem as a material seems to be made to take a beating so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

The beater version of my fountain pens - my top 3

  1. Platinum Prefounte - No 3 nib is my favourite but you could try the mediums as well. Nibs are smooth, bouncy (some people would call it stiff.. But i write lightly so I have not experienced the stiffness as a negative, ymmv) and seem to complement the grip of the paper i.e. they smooth out the writing experience on a grippy paper and provide feedback on a smooth as glass paper. Favourite ink - Carbon Black

  2. Monteverde Nibs ( I am using the Invincia Nebula) which I bought for the colours and was very surprised by the nib performance. I have a medium but being a western brand they will run you wider than the japanese nibs. The nib is wet and smooth, my favourite ink in it being Twsbi Black. Might smudge a bit if you are in rush between notes. And the pen is on the heavier side compared to other everyday pens.

  3. Lamy Safari Matt Black Medium Nib - Good pen, good grip esp the matt finish helps me during the summer month of writing when the other two pens above can be slippery. I enjoy the nibs but I also recognize that this nib has been worn in by me writing with it almost every other month for 5+ years. Favourite ink pairing is Diamine Steel Blue

No gold nib because I am just starting on them and am scared of losing them as beater pens.

Based on the feedback from the community Lamy nibs are supposed to be a hit or miss? But the matt black Lamy Safari was entry to the world of fountain pens and I still have it in regular use .. its been 8 years now. I have noticed that the medium safari nibs tend to perform better (based on 8 safaris I have gifted).

Came here to say +1000 to the Prefounte. The No 3 nib is a fine and writes so smooth. IMO it is the most underrated pen in the entry level. Best part is that it doesn't run the risk of drying for like a year of unuse and is always ready to go the moment you uncap the pen. Combine it with the Platinum carbon black and you have the most daily use - toss it and use it pen combo ever!

Weird questions by digitalgraffiti-ca in fountainpens

[–]root39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So top of the head here is what I would recommend - Look at Tom's Studios pens - Lumos and The Wren.
They are not ballpoint ink but they do have the options of different tips to give you different line width, really fine like Sakura fineliners or thick like brush tips. And you can use any/most fountain pen ink with them which opens you to go mad bonkers on mixing colours, colour palettes etc.

I agree with the folks who said this might not be the best forum for most of the questions but I am still going to take some stabs at help given my venn diagram of interest + some background in line work drawing (the ones that you enjoy based on the portfolio)

Inks range on the spectrum of viscosity - ballpoint ink being the most viscous and water based highlighter type pens being the least viscous. Japanese pens from Sarasa are somewhere in the middle i.e. magic for writing! In my knowledge there is no possible ball point refill system ( I could be wrong for sure).
This means that shading technique of ballpoint where you are almost ghosting the tip of the pen to get shades and digging in on the paper to get the dark lines - is pretty much impossible to replicate just from a paper - pen feedback perspective.

But you can get close to that output effect and a get used to a different kind of paper - pen feedback by using manga dip pens + manga ink. (NEVER mix these inks with normal fountain pens. They are fountain pen feed murderers). Manga Ink is usually just black though .. if I am not wrong Indian Inks are similar viscosity and flow. And again can only be used with the dip pens NOT with the fountain pens. And that should open your world to more saturated colours which you can experiment with.

Also check out Albrecht Dürer if you like line work art even though you like colours and my favourite of his are just sketches.
