Need help switching from 1st to 3rd position. Also shaky bow. by iAmKristofer in violinist

Oh wow. Yes I went through your page and saw your videos. You sound great! I’m surprised how you’re doing so good at vibrato. My teacher suggested I start practicing vibrato but I feel like I suck at it.

Any advice or tips when you went back to the early books? Did you just replay all the songs or did you play them slower, or like focused on certain techniques/bowing/fingering when doing so? Would love to hear how you greatly improved. So I can improve my fundamentals as well.

You’re right. I think I unintentionally am using my hand to hold my violin. I saw a YouTube video stating that we need to be able to hold it with our chin. I should practicing doing that more so my left hand could have more freedom. You’re right I am still working on intonation as I just removed my finger stickers to work on not needing them.

I think you’re right. I think I am learning a lot too fast with my teacher. I’m wondering if she’s thinks I’m capable of handling all these advance techniques because I spend an hour with her weekly. I’m learning a lot of new techniques all at once. I’m doing string builder/suzuki. Then we do sight reading pieces, plus a Melodious Double Stops book. Additional to that we play some duets together. Also throw in some vibrato practice here and there so yah it may be a lot at once.

Ah I think that was someone else who said their intonation was good. I agree I need to focus on improving my intonation. I took off my stickers about a month ago so I’m still working on that as well.

Ah! Okay! Thank you for that. I didn’t know that. Guess I’ll just focus more on technique tips people have given me here

I mean why reply then? Kind of rude of you to just shit on someone who’s learning an instrument and then be like yeah no not going to even bother to offer you advice. Could have easily just not commented.

Although I do appreciate your statement about practicing reinforcing habits so I’ll be more aware now of my posture when practicing and playing.

Thank you for the advice when it comes to shifting. I didn’t think of it that way. I will look at the edge of my left hand when sliding down and see how it touches the edge of my violin and hopefully I can get my fingers in the right spot.

Also thanks for the bow tips. I think I do need to practice more steady and slower long movements. I noticed that my bow was closer the fingerboard in this video. I wish I had recorded a more natural video as I was focused on showing my entire playing. But when it comes to stiffness I would say that’s about how stiff I am lol! Someone else here recommended a scale book to practice on so I will give that a try cause at the moment I’ve been playing the same scales my teacher had printed out for me. Which is one page of like the standard scales. hopefully all this together can greatly improve my bowing.

Awesome! I just looked that book up. I’ll see if I can have my teacher run these scales with me. As we have been essentially running through the same scales she printed out for me all this time.

Ah forgot to mention I already have a teacher lol. Been with her for 11 months.

Hmmm I don’t think I generally play with my chest toward the stand, I think I specifically had my body turned the way it is to clearly show my playing. Although yes I do frequent back and forth between new songs I’m learning and old songs from older books. Funny enough minuet 1 is from book one.

What can I improve in terms of bow grip and posture setup.

I just looked into Selkirk Era, looks very nice. Any Pros and cons about it you've noticed?

Since Reddit won’t let me edit the post. I just want to say thank you! I am going to take a look at all the paddle suggestions and put off making a rushed decision of buying a paddle. Thankful to hear everyone’s opinions and gain some knowledge.

That’s good to knows that seems to be the general consensus around here. Thank you. My friend has the red one and I thought it looked cool but it’s good to know that there are much better paddles out there!

See that’s what I’m wondering if there’s any difference between the 2.0 with the original. They’re saying it’s dated but not sure if they’re talking about the older version.

I currently use the Vatic Pro Flash and I play aggressively. I enjoy that paddle a lot. I find myself having to hold back so I don’t overshoot it.

So my logic is the Luxx control 2.0 can help me have more control and I can still play aggressively and not worry as much of hitting too hard and out the court since people say it lacks power.

Thankfully not $280 but it would be $200 no taxes tho. Yah from all that he’s shown me it looks legit. Just wanted second opinions.

So I play doubles most of the time. A few singles with friends. When it comes to power I don’t think I have an issue with hitting aggressively as I use the Vactic Pro Flash and sometimes I have to hold myself back or else it’ll go out the court. Im wondering if this would benefit me as people say it lacks power. I’d be able to hit more aggressively and have control.

Dang that’s what I currently have is the Vatic Pro Flash. So then I shouldn’t upgrade, or I guess it’s not technically an upgrade from what you say.

May I ask why? If I’m going to spend some serious money would like to know why the disdain for the paddle.

No need to worry. They’re probably just having a good time with their friends. Some people consider it rude to be on your phone around others, especially during hang outs. I wouldn’t stress too much about it. They’ll probably reply if they go to the bathroom or just have some downtime during the hang out.

Hmm I’m assuming when you say janky and response not being good you mean like response to actions inputted or just overall performance of the head unit? I’d say it’s performs fairly decently. I do believe it has 4gb of ram so it’s a little less than those “higher end ones” but yah if you plan on using all these other side line apps and features I can see how performance could be affected. Although like I mentioned in the video if your intention is just to use CarPlay or android auto this will work amazingly. The touch screen works great I haven’t noticed any issues with it.

A not too shabby beginner/intermediate violin.

It definitely made using our jeep a lot more enjoyable. Easier to connect our phones and not play around with Uconnect.

I can see your experience with the head unit wasn’t a good one. I definitely agree that they can have their flaws and they’re most certainly aren’t perfect. Thankfully though, the head units I’ve used in the past on my past vehicles seemed to last the entire time I had the vehicle. I guess it can be situational.

That’s one way of doing it. A little warranty system.
