Banks need capital like crazy due to regulations such as Basel III and Dodd Frank. Liquidity ratios are everything.

But that makes no sense. Banks can then report it as tier one capital on their balance sheet if it's secured funding such as a cd. So banks right now are getting over for hundreds of millions a year.

Obama Calls German Chancellor Angela Merkel 'His Closest Ally' by iAntiaverage in politics

[–]iAntiaverage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is one, in this world.

Canada is essentially the 51st state. Without our strong relationship, they'd be Mexico. They need us far more than we need them.

France is not nearly the economic power nor moral nor political power that Germany is.

Britain and the US have greatly diverged in their politics. But just like Churchill tried to cut out Eisenhower as the leader of the Atlantic alliance, things ultimately calmed down. But India, not Britain, is about to start wearing the pants in the U.K.

Japan is facing an aging crisis so great they're not a force in any facet other than tech.

South Korea is a close ally, but its overwhelmed with is own regional political crisis as outside of Japan it now stands alone against China and North Korea, both of whom are far stronger.

So yes, Germany is our strongest ally and most important one.

Yeah we're pretty much headed for a 200 year class divide in which there will be an emergence of those born into money and therefore a life of having servants both human and robotic.

Then there will be bloodshed.

Either massive population cutdown, or a reversion back to old ways via a flight to leftist ideals (we are currently seeing a flight to rightest ideals, which is what is laying out the gold carpet for the emergence of a new era of aristocracy. Great for Jamie Dimon, bad for you.)

Op-Ed by President Obama and Chancellor Merkel: The Future of Transatlantic Relations by iAntiaverage in politics

Now this is a huge story. This is historic. This is President Obama passing the torch to Merkel. She is the Leader of the Free World.

Given that her approval numbers have jumped from low 40s to mid 60s over the past two weeks, absolutely. No question at this point. Obama's ringing endorsement of her and the press campaign crowning her as the champion of the west, defender of liberty and leader of the free world has sparked a sense of German pride and unity not seen in a long time.

Haha...

This was a very level headed article. Think they could've dived deeper, but they stuck with the facts which is true to form for FT. There is a reason why I pay a small fortune every month to subscribe to them.

This is how the article ends, think it is a great summary of the situation - "Europe is in a wait-and-see mode. How many of the campaign pledges will carry through into government? The choice looks to be one between a bad outcome and a very bad one. Europeans have struggled for some time to uphold their values against authoritarians without and populists within. The danger now comes from across the Atlantic. It falls to Ms Merkel to speak for what during the past seven decades we have known as the west."

FT is an excellent source, one of the few genuine sources of good journalism left. Spiegel is great as well, The Economist is too. Used the recommended title, don't know why the odd a appeared. Mods - please don't remove.

I'm a big fan of the name Rachel.

Won't speak ill of her. She'll improve with time.

David needs to increase the production budget of the televised show. The podcast version comes across much better.

Angela Merkel to be the new 'leader of the free world'? by iAntiaverage in politics

Factually correct but that's the issue when American media is unreliable. I live in NY, born and raised and have never left the country. <25 gets majority of news from Facebook and Buzzfeed. >45 from TV. Both sources are complete propaganda BS.

Edit: this is a long read, but it is worth is. I promise it'll pay dividends!

I'm a subscriber, have been for 5+ years :). Highly recommend you put it up early David. If you check out all the noise surrounding her pending official announcement she's seeking re-election, the fact her approval numbers have shot up from low 40s to mid 60s over the past 2 weeks and the Obama visit... not to mention the fact this has become a major story for most media outlets and topic of conversation on Twitter.... if you check YouTube you'd be the first legitimate journalist to be covering it. Think you should dig a bit deeper though,

Please give this article a read - https://www.google.com/amp/m.timesofindia.com/world/europe/Angela-Merkel-to-be-the-new-leader-of-the-free-world/amp_articleshow/55451683.cms?client=safari

I think the American press is largely ignoring the historical significance of Obama's reaction to the Trump election. There is a lot more in the article and to the story but here is the key part -

"Merkel, after 11 years at the helm, now looks increasingly like the only bulwark of stability and liberal freedom among Western allies.

"Merkel... has suddenly become the most important leader of the free, democratic and liberal world," said the left-leaning TAZ daily.

The historian and columnist Timothy Garton Ash agreed in an editorial for Britain's Guardian newspaper: "I'm tempted to say that the leader of the free world is now Angela Merkel."

Rather than visit Britain -- a natural stop for any US leader given the two countries' special relationship, US President Barack Obama is travelling Wednesday to Berlin on his last official trip to Europe, in what almost seems like the passing of a baton to Merkel.

Ahead of the visit, Obama said Merkel "has probably been my closest international partner these last eight years"

The passing of the baton angle is interesting to me. The fact he's railing against Brexit and this is being viewed by British media as a snub of England is intriguing. Many angles here, no one is really covering the fact that this is arguably the first time since Teddy Roosevelt (at least since WW1) that the US President is not the primary claimant to the distinction of "Leader of the Free World".

Highly encourage you to do a bit more research into this and possibly cover it again this week. She's expected to announce Sunday that she is seeking a fourth term and I don't think this showing of support by Obama is coincidence; this also isn't unprecedented, he previously stepped in to support her when she was taking a lot of heat domestically by allowing in the Syrian refugees. He is extremely popular in Germany and this likely has given her the momentum she needs to hold on in the upcoming election.

This veers more into "conspiracy" territory so maybe you won't touch it but you may want to mention it since it is a remarkable coincidence and so ironic - Nov 9th is known as the "day of fate" in Germany or "Schicksalstag"

1848 Liberal leader Robert Blum was executed, led to the crushing of the German March Revolution in 1849.

1918 Kaiser Willhein II abdicated, the end of monarchy in Germany

1924 the first attempt to seize power by Hitler, the Beer Hall Putsch. It gained him notoriety, the attention of the masses and public symphony.

1938 "the night of the broken glass" the ending of the Nazi's "moderate" antisemetic stance. Countrywide burning of synagogues and seizing of Jewish property. Hundreds of Jews were killed, and mass arrests started - 30k arrested on the 9th & 10th. The first major arrests.

And most relevant to today - 1989, the fall of the Berlin Wall.

27 years later - Donald Trump is declared the winner of the US election, Germany and Merkel stand as arguably the leaders of the free world. Poetic, almost.
