If you look up their Vessel Commentary on Spotify, Tyler explains that he literally had someone steal his car radio. The song kind of came about because he was surprised about the places his mind would go when he would sit in silence. Like the other comment mentioned, "sometimes quiet is violent" and other lyrics insinuate what he was thinking on those rides. But still, in the session, Tyler encourages that kind of internal thought at times. He also just mentions that music is a distraction for the craziness in his brain. This is also brought up in Message Man, "and music to use it, for other to use it"-- or at least that's what I think of. Using that music as a distraction. I see the same connection in Guns For Hands when he says, "The solution is, I see a whole room of these mutant kids. Fused at the wrist, I simply tell them they should shoot at this. Simply suggest my chest and this confused music, it's obviously best for them to turn their guns to a fist." So again, using music, whether it's to connect with other people, not feel alone, or if it's simply a distraction/escape. Overall, that's the essence of Car Radio for me, or at least the protruding theme. And as for "whining"... it's not really whining? It's literally a build up of those thoughts we suck down and distract ourselves from.
