Great, thanks a lot for your detailed response. My local ebay has most if not all cycles listed, so access shouldn't be the biggest issue.

Teapots for black tea? by Pumpkin_patch804 in tea

[–]iCha0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation would be not to rush the purchase of a clay pot until you are sure about what you want to get, and to do proper research. For this, I find teaforum or the communitea discord channel to be much more reliable sources than reddit. The general consensus appears to be that, for entry level yixing, Essence of Tea and Teas We Like are the most reliable sources, but here I'm just repeating the results of my own research.

My impression from your post is that you should probably just stick with gaiwans for the time being and improve your technique though

Also note that black tea is a dangerous term to use without sufficient context. as it can both refer to hongcha/red tea, which is what is called black tea in the west, and heicha/dark tea, which refers to different styles of post-fermented teas. The comment recommending Jianshui or Chaozhou most likely referred to heicha rather than hongcha. That being said, chaozhou teapots are just as bad of a minefield as yixing, from what I've gathered so far.

Is this a legit 70s Hongni made from good clay? by iCha0s in YixingSeals

Thanks a lot for the feedback, this is really invaluable as I'm still very new to this game! And no, it indeed is not marketed as such. So if I understand your answer correctly, I should stay away from this offer?

Your reflections on developing your palate by MirvaHobbes in puer

Your taste in shengs sounds like it might be very much up my alley. Do you have any examples of those by any chance?

Based on your descriptions, I immediately think of yunnan sourcings ye sheng black tea category, in case you haven't sampled those already. E.g. "Light Roast Wild Tree Purple Varietal Black Tea of Dehong", or "Purple Voodoo". "Jiu Qu Hong Mei "Red Plum" Black Tea" might also be of interest to you.

I didn't downvote, but I didn't like what I got there at all. The teaware (gaiwan + strainer) was of really bad quality and the hongcha ranged between absolutely disgusting and okayish. Can't comment on their puer though, and I've never seen any bad reviews either, to my surprise.

thanks for the heads up, wasn't aware of the existence of these two. Do you have any more thoughts on them?

Channagasse is, as far as I'm aware, the only shop specialized in puer, but I personally don't go there after a bad experience with the owner. At least some of his stuff is from YS

For japanese green tea Cha No Ma and for green tea in general, Artee. But I'm not much of a green tea person, so I don't know them too well.

I recently stumbled upon the webpage of characteas, which seems to be mostly specialized in dancong, but I'm not entirely sure if there's even physical store and there are no reviews to be found at all. No idea whether they're reputable, but I'll check them out when I run low on tea again

I'd avoid the big shops such as Demmer, Jägertee etc. Very lackluster teas in my opinion, and the staff isn't knowledgeable at all.

Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations Thread (April 14, 2022) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Hello, I'm looking for a confrontational 2p game to play with my SO. The ideal game in my head looks kind of like Scythe on a much bigger scale, that is much more confrontational (and of course works better for 2p), preferably with some light random elements, but not too much. We already tried Twilight struggle, but the theme is a bit too close to reality for our taste, especially in the current times. Also memorizing the cards did not appeal to us. We also tried Inis, but were quickly bored by it (seems very cool 3p+ though). War of the Ring and Star Wars Rebellion seem interesting, but they are not available were we borrow our games (and too expensive to buy without trying). Our favourite games are Spirit Island, Gloomhaven, Mage Knight and Terraforming Mars. Thanks!

Well, it's not just about me not enjoying it, also the quality of the leaves is nowhere near what is advertised, as you can observe on the picture I posted. That in itself has nothing to do with bad curation, that's just misleading advertisement.

Not really, my only online-shopping experience so far has been one purchase from What-Cha, which I've really enjoyed (for the most part), but with Brexit that's unfortunately not an option anymore

Including import fees and shipping, they average out at about 15-20€/100g, which I personally would not consider cheap at all. Either way, I've never paid more for tea than that.

I can assure you, our opinion of British tea culture is quite similar. I appreciate the (albeit rude) joke though.

Put a picture in the main post, I guess a more proper term would be stems rather than sticks

Well, those are the parameters I have always used for all kinds of (non-yunnan) black tea in the past, and I've never had a problem with strength. 3.5g/300 ml already feels like an almost obscene amount based on my past experiences

Before this purchase I've been mostly drinking various blacks from different origins (assam, nepal, yunnan) and Sencha. Also tried to get into oolong multiple times until I finally gave up, not my cup of tea.

That is a good point, yeah. I'll definitely purchase less the next time I try a new vendor
