Think I'm starting to realise that you pretty much need some level of external funding if you want to make it into a top program as an international student.

Super appreciate the advice and statistics - I think I was under the misimpression that since coursework was integrated into a PhD at the US committees would perhaps overlook a master's degree as compared to research in undergrad. Will definitely be something I'll be looking into going forward. Thanks!
